It just dawned on me that maybe Brooks is writing about us not trading Zucc so that someone puts up a 1st rounder. Gorton understands noone wants to offer a 1st and prospect, but if Brooksie wastes an entire column whining about Zucc being spared may make teams want him more.

Or Zucc stays, because Brooks has a lot of good points, and a 2nd isn't good enough.

I still see prospects as lottery tickets. I don't care if the return comes in the form of prospects, picks or young NHLers. The more opportunities, the better the odds you land some gems.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. If the return for Hayes doesn't meet our ask, I'd rather just keep him. A 2nd and a solid prospect isn't doing more for this organization than Kevin Hayes.

More importantly, this is dropping a hint to the league that there's no gun to our head on this one. Letting everybody know that you have to make a deal is how you end up getting a bunch of quantity back with little quality. *coughcoughMcDonagh*

I’ll continue to reiterate that Zuccarello will either bring a 1st and Rykov-type prospect, or a better prospect and a 2nd. Gorton is probably leaking to show he’s not under the gun to trade either player. We go through this crap every year.

There's a difference between his opinion column on Sundays of musings where this could be the case if he got convinced and an entire normal column.

A lot of those teams with easy remaining schedules are near the Rangers for any potential lottery seeding.
