Obviously nothing has happened yet but how can you get a first for Nash and not for Zucc....
Dumb GM's. Also I can't remember the market being as flooded with scoring wingers as this season so that plays into it. But Zucc is clearly the better player than Nash but Nash's name recognition and "two-way play" likely pumped up his value.

I completely understand the logic behind trading a 31 year old Zucc and a 32 year old McQuaid on expiring contracts. The logic behind trading Hayes continues to escape me. We lived with several years of the growing pains of Kevin Hayes. He finally seems to be close to a refined product and a really solid 2 way player for us and he is only 26 years old. Why isn't our first priority to re-sign him to a 5 year deal. We'd get his 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 aged years out of him.

When you draft a player it is such a gamble. It is a relative unknown. So many things can go wrong in their development. You hope they turn into a Kevin Hayes. We know what we have in him, we aren't in any precarious cap situation and he seems to love being a Ranger. Why not re-sign him and make him part of this rebuild. Hayes and Mika signed for the next 4-5 years is a really nice foundation.

Zucc is the third best winger on the market if Stone and Panarin are both available. 4th if a team considers Duchene an option for the wing. Then there's guys like Dzingel, Simmonds, Nyqvist, and Silfverberg as other rental options. Toffoli and Hoffman as possible adds with term. Only a handful of 1st rounders get dealt at the deadline, so from purely a numbers perspective it's unlikely that both Zucc and Hayes get one. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if neither player got a 1st rounder in return and the Rangers wound up with 3 prospects, a couple second round picks, and a roster or player or two to take a flier on the way they did with Spooner.

Zucc is a better player right now than Nash was, but that was a different season and it all comes down to the market.

It is very easy to rebuild this team.

Trade Hayes, Kreider, Zuccarello, Namestnikov, Strome, and Vesey.

Buyout Staal.

Trade Pionk for a bag of pucks.

Sign Franson. Sign Nakladal. Sign Karlsson. Sign Panarin. Re-sign Zuccarello. Re-sign Hayes.

Trade Lias to BUF for Mittelstadt.

Defense 32M:
Skjei Karlsson
Smith Nakladal
Claesson DeAngelo
Franson

Forwards 40M:

Panarin Zibanejad Zuccarello

Chytil Hayes Buchnevich

Meskanen Mittelstadt Fast

Gropp Howden Beleskey

Goalies (10M):
Lundqvist
Georiev

Those are moves that can be done this offseason. You're telling me that wouldn't be a contender? This doesn't need to be a 3-5 year rebuild.
Where's silverfish?

Why would age matter in terms of what they may get back? These teams are trading for 3 months of them, not 3 years. Is 31 year old Mats Zuccarello going to falter down the stretch because of his age? That didn't make much sense.

Just saw that eeli tolvanen can be had for the right price....Kevin Hayes was mentioned as someone who could get him plus back

Where'd you see the bit about Hayes being someone who could get him back? I think the only way that happens is if Hayes signs an extension or the Rangers send both him and Zucc in a package deal to Nashville.

That, or the Preds have REALLY soured on him.

Just my opinion obviously, but if we're looking at returns of a 2nd rounder and a Howden/Hajek level prospect for Hayes, I'd just as soon re-sign the guy and call it a day.

You forgot trade for Josh “Shot Suppressor” Manson

Boyle was had for a second rounder. Zucc can definitely return a first rounder

In theory it just depends on the other guys moved

The age w him and Hayes is pointless at they are both ufa. They could sign where traded but not for sure

Liked for the "two-way play"

I'd take Howden and a 2nd for Hayes all day long, but I'm a big fan of Howden. I understand it's not a sexy return like Tolvanen or a 1st rounder, but the Rangers need as many lottery tickets as possible during this stage. I'm also not entirely sure that the Rangers see Hayes as the player a lot of folks here see him as.

I've sort of always felt like Hayes would end up with Winnipeg for Petan, a 2nd, and a prospect like Appleton.

Thanks for the link. Still have a hard time seeing them dealing Tolvanen for Hayes unless there's more to it.
I dont think there is more to it. I think its that its been years of putting rosters together that they thought could win the cup. Their players are getting older. How many opportunities are they gona get? This is the 4th legitimate year of having a run at the cup...thats a damn lot to come away with nothing. The Rangers had two years. SJ had the one year, this year, and maybe you could consider one other in the last 5. There is pressure in Nashville to seal the deal. They are going to have to get past tough teams in the West and then likely beat TB. They need all the fire power they can get and capitalize before the window closes.

Tolvanen wont mean anything to them when he finally breaks in as an impact player in 2-3 years and a lot of their guys best years are behind them and/or moved on.

Rangers @ Casino Night.

Funny how they are lined up, Zucc and Kreider next to the King. Hayes all the way in the back

Slats and Joe having a good time back there...

The market+pedigree is why Nash returned what he did.

If all else were equal, there is no way he would have returned more than Evander Kane did.

Side note: We need Ottawa to sign Stone and Duchene (or one at the very least) and for Jarmo to hang onto Panarin.

All seriousness, it’s smart of the Rangers to do the casino night 10 days before the trade deadline. I know in the past it’s been like the day before or two days wife the trade deadline.

Let the guys have one more nice event as teammates and then whoever’s getting traded at least got to have this before going away.
