My assumption is you have a legit 1C in Zib, a legit superstar in Panarin, and two kids who have ceilings of top end forward. You can throw a 40 pt second line center in there (the whoever) and still have one of the better top 6's in the league. If the bulk of your production comes from the wing, who cares?
If the production of the wings is impacted by the 2C then everyone will care. TBD but through 4 games whomever played 2C had no impact on scoring and quite frankly contributed little if anything.

Point is...The won. Both. Lets see if they can replicate that again.
That's not the point. That's a level of analysis that is little more than looking at the final score to determine how the game was played. The way they won those games isnt sustainable, and that's the point.

It's tough to have it both ways, not saying you, but people here say Strome stinks and they need an upgrade, yet Panarin produces playing with him. if you're paying a guy 10m a year, he should get points regardless of who his center is. Same goes for Laff. Not saying it's perfect but we may have to get comfortable with the idea that the 2C is mostly a passenger, carried by the wings. Because that's the way it's looking for the foreseeable future.

From Reddit. Didn't know where else to post it.

sure but there’s also plenty of reason to think they can improve their performance and banking points even as they struggle is a positive in the bigger picture of making the playoffs.

if they don’t improve, obviously that’s bad, but there’ was always a lot of reasons to think they’d struggle out of the gate and improve across the season

See the depressing thing I've been dwelling on of late is that NYR have no actually drafted a star skater since Marc Savard.

Most of our star players, Zibby, Panarin, Nash, Gaborik, McDonagh, Fox, Jagr- We've gotten them via free agency or trade.

We've drafted some 1B players like Cally, Stepan, Dubi, but no real game breakers. No special talent.

We drafted Lundqvist but that was a late round hunch.

Now we have measured projections for Kakko and Lafreniere- that they may be first line players, but it's unlikely they will reach Zibby/Bread level ever.
I think Kakko can be Marian Hossa 2.0 and Lafreniere has the potential to be a Mika level star player. Too soon to judge them, Mika himself didn't become a star level player until he was 25-26 and Panarin didn't even come to the NHL until he was 24.

Does Fox count? I know we didn't draft him but he's only even played for the Rangers.

As far as we're concerned, that's too long term. We have to pay Fox and Kakko next summer.

If Kakko keeps it up, his next contract will be less than his ELC. Haha

As for Fox, with buyouts off the books, Georgiev gone, and the potential for a 1 million increase, I really think the Rangers can get Fox on a Z contract. 8x8.5. That's how you start building a competitive team. Gotta get these guys to sign reasonable AAVs, like Z did.

Brooksies article.... I've never heard Panarin speak so much without a translator. https://nypost.com/2021/10/20/artemi-panarin-joins-mike-zibanejad-on-rangers-top-line/

“I feel pretty good about it,” Panarin, who has struck up a special partnership with Strome over the last two years, said without use of an interpreter. “[Mika] is a great player, Kreids is a great player, scoring [three] goals so far, it’s going to be good chemistry.

“We’ve played before, too, not pretty successful but sometimes pretty well. So we’ll see what happens. But of course playing with Mika is special. He’s rich now.”

“Probably I need to work a little more [about understanding what we need to do], because last time we played, it looked like me and Mika were just waiting for the puck and just standing there,” Panarin said. “For example, the [Boston] line with [Brad] Marchand, [David] Pastrnak, and [Patrice] Bergeron, I think they have the success because they work together, and [think] the same.

“I don’t want to say that when I play with Stromer that I don’t work as hard, but Stromer knows where I am and I know where he is. That is what I mean by needing to work harder. With Mika and Kreids right now, it’s new, so there has to be more.”

“One hundred percent it was very important,” Panarin said. “To be honest, I was really nervous after the first two games but right now it’s so much better. I think we’re playing the right way. And Igor helped us too so I hope he can play like that all year.”
The best part of this is simply that Panarin is opening up a bit. Maybe he’s more comfortable and content than I had imagined. Glad to read this.

Laf’s upside is far higher than mika’s peak, and in no way am I saying that as an insult to mika.

lafrieniere was considered a prospect just under mackinnon and Matthew’s.
Those two are currently 4.0+ war players.

Never happen but I’d do Thomas and Tara for Kravs.

St Lou gets out of Tara contract giving them some cap relief.
Tarasenko only has one year left after this year. Can’t imagine they’re that desperate to trade him. He’s more of a TDL move I think, assuming he proves healthy. His value can skyrocket. Worst case, he’s cooked and the put him on LTIR. I can’t imagine St Louis paying a premium to shed Tarasenko.

They’re only cap compliant while Sundqvist and his $2.75m contract is on LTIR. Once he’s healthy, they’ll start getting penalized if they don’t move salary.

We've gotten so hyped about our #1OA and #2OA, ( rightfully so ) that we've 'overlooked' our late draft talent.

Barron and Berard will play a huge role going forward IMO. They are the quintessential types that you win with imo.

If the Barron/Cuylle/Berard/Othmann picks hit thats going to really improve the depth of the team in the coming years when the previous crop of prospects start to get expensive and tough decisions are made.

Huh, laf was never considered anywhere near mack or matthews, and his upside is not that of a two way center that has scored 41g and 34 assists in a 57 game season...
