100% agree that he won't be back. I even agree that should there be a good value deal on the table that Drury should take it around the deadline or just before. What I don't agree with is people attempting to downplay him as a player. The guy has come here and filled the 2C role out of no where and has gelled with the teams best player. He's a 2C, even if people aren't enamored with him overall, the guy's production is clearly that of a 2C
Does he make Panarin a better player…or the other way around?

also, name the players who have gotten legitimate shots at centering Panarin other than Strome.

I am curious how Strome is viewed compared to a player like Derek Stepan was. Strome puts up more points, Stepan was much better defensively, but both have been the subject of long debates on this board as to whether they were worthy 2Cs on a contender.

If we had Stepan in his prime centering Panarin on the second line, we're probably Cup contenders.

Oddsmakers in Vegas like the sucker people in with dumb bets. They don’t play the games they just like to take people’s money.
But you understand that its a zero sum, right? If they boost the Rangers, another team gets knocked down lower, ect. Obv they take an edge on every bet, but in ranking the teams, theyre striving for accuracy, otherwise it could cost them money.

The Rangers are a popular team. Lots of New Yorkers visit Vegas every day. People are more likely to bet on the Rangers than other teams. Odds don’t look so bad so people throw some cash down on them when they are there. They lose on the Tampa and Colorado betters but make way more on the yokels who bet the Rangers to win with decent odds. It’s free money for the books.

Jeff Marek on the Sabres: "It seems like they're running a couple of different experiments on the ice: Tage Thompson is now a centre, there's been some speculation that Dahlin might take some shifts up front not unlike what Housley did with his Sabres career once upon time"

bern is loving the idea of this experiement!

Potential is just that - potential. They also have the potential to completely miss the playoffs. That uncertainty is why you have to hedge.

I don't disagree with that at all. I think it's just a difference of what the hedge is. The hedge they have chosen is to hold Strome, and if they are sucking ass they can trade him. On the other hand, if the stars align and they are looking at a top 3 finish in the Metro, it's a self rental.

Scotty Bowman used Housley on the wing.

Not clear how people are forgetting Panarin's extended absence last year, during which Strome was nearly a PPG player (9 in 11 games). This guy is fully qualified as a 2C and when he reaches free agency plenty of teams will be bright enough to pay him like one. Unless Chytil really breaks out this year AS A CENTER and not just as a goal scorer, we're going to be set back a bit when we lose Strome.

We’re losing him anyway so why not plan for that inevitability ahead of time and know what you have in Chytil now instead of waiting and putting yourself in a hole? Chytil, an offensive center, will have a better opportunity playing with the better offensive players.

Because it would be nice to win some games this year and Strome helps us do that.

Not to mention the depth issues. Say we get that draft pick and Strome is gone. Chytil gets hurt. Hello Morgan Barron top 6 center! Then we're really in that hole.

Not every UFA to be has to be sold for a draft pick. Strome is a good player who has exceled here and we got him for Ryan f***ing Spooner. We've gotten value out of him already

The thing is that they are planning for it. They are just planning for it differently. I don't want another Strome in our 2c spot. There is nothing wrong with Chytil developing a more 2way game which we desperately need from Strome right now. Chytil spending time playing with Goodrow the majority of this season should be very good for him. Also, the more time he spends on the third line the better deal Drury can get on his next contract.

We are not forgetting that strome can put up some points, its the facts that hes terrible at faceoffs, he cant play defense, takes bad penalties, and is about as tough as charmin toilet paper on the ice. Strome sadly adds no other element to this team. He may or may not be qualified to be a 2c but i can tell you one thing, i have no interest in resigining strome and giving him the type of money that #2cs get. He is not worth it. Let someone else pay him. I would prefer to trade him and let chytl take his spot. And yes if we got a 1st for strome id be happy. We would have 2 1st round picks in a DEEP and TALENTED draft. Maybe then we can say to detriot, hey heres (2) 1st round picks for Larkin. Who knows.

Chytl has shown he can play the position, he was just rarely given a shot with that bum Quinn.
