The blockbuster, Slap Shots has confirmed with multiple sources, would have been with the Rangers and it would have sent Ryan McDonagh to the Oilers in exchange for the fourth-overall selection in the draft the Blueshirts intended to use on Clayton Keller of the USNDT.

There would have been additional components to the trade, but that would have formed the foundation of it. The Rangers — coming off their white-flag, five-game, first-round surrender to the Penguins — not only understood the time was at hand for a makeover, but recognized McDonagh represented their most marketable commodity.

We are told conversations with a handful of teams ensued, with Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon believed a primary target and linemate Gabriel Landeskog a secondary one, but rival GMs did not hold McDonagh in quite the same esteem as the Rangers.

Too bad it didn't happen.

Players don't like change. They are all in their comfort zone. They are making ridiculous sums of money. The Rangers can't worry about that. Lundqvist acknowledged that it's a business.

Eh not really news there from Brooks

I feel like it was pretty much guaranteed to be McDonagh when Maloney first spilled the team was looking to snag Keller at 4

I’m much more interested in what the rest of the trade would have looked like. The summer of 2016 would have given Edmonton 3 more years of Mac.

I remember a couple folks saying it was like 4th overall + Hall, which would have been amazing.

Brooks probably knows better than me, but the Rangers choose Girardi over Stralman, not Boyle over Stralman

Also the only reason that deal didnt happen is CBJ took duBois, which was considered a reach at the time.

Correct. We needed a scoring D-man to run the PP with Richards being bought out. Stralman with 38 points in 3 seasons didn't really prove he could be that. Sure, he eclipsed that total in a single season in Tampa, but hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

Once Girardi was signed to an extension, Stralman was out

On two recent 31 Thoughts episodes, they’ve brought up that #4 pick a few times and they mentioned two other trades Edmonton was close to making for it, so how close the Rangers were to getting it relative to other deals is another wrinkle in all of this
One other deal was to switch spots with Calgary. Not sure how likely that trade would be.

Man, did they really love puljujarvi. Wow.

All of that is true, but also Sather wanted Boyle for years. He was always going to try to sign him as a FA.

I mean at the time there was very good reason to. Poolparty was rated over Laine most of the year if bbn I remember correctly. He was in high esteem, certainly higher tha duBois, who had a late charge.

People always rave about ratings and BPA, but never call out when they are flatout wrong. Puljujarvi in 2016, Dal Colle is another one that comes to mind. Puljujarvi was ranked 2nd overall several times throughout the season as you said.

It’d be a true story if Sather ever considered not trying to re-sign Girardi. But I’m 100% confident that was never on the table.

Sure but the people that are paid to know more than us rank things a certain way for a reason. Of course there are disagreements, but they are more qualified than we are .

I am not criticizing them for being wrong. I am criticizing people who claim rankings are the way to go (sayign to always go BPA etc), yet never seem to realize the rankings aren't perfect

Chayka said he had a deal with Edmonton on the draft floor to move up to 4 for Keller too, it feels like Chiarelli was out there saying yes to everything before ultimately saying no to everything

Absolutely. It was more a commentary on how bad the luck, or bad breaks, Edmonton has had. No one disputes the Yakupov ranking. I don't blame them for those picks. It's just crazy that they could have been saved from that puljujarvi route with a few different trades that could have addressed problems. Just like teams were trying to snag Yakupov by offering defense.

I'm far from the guy that second guesses based on hindsight. It was an observation on the absurdity of their situation.

See Yakupov was one guy that I never liked. He was too small for his playing style to translate to the NHL. But of course I've been wrong before too. Its not an exact science.

I remember wanting Mark McNeil over JT Miller. Jordan Schroeder over Chris Kreider.

Hits and misses

>Trade 4th overall for McDonagh
>Nah, I'd rather trade Hall for Larsson
>End up with Larsson and Puljujarvi instead of Hall and McDonagh

As I've mentioned before, it's going to be tough for Hank if Zucc has to say goodbye. I have a feeling the front office will not ignore this...

Lundqvist hopes Rangers will keep Zuccarello 'for many reasons'
You could swap out Zuccarello for McDonagh or Nash in this story and date it this time last season. And about Girardi getting bought out. Hank was close with all of those guys.

And what do we expect Hank to say when asked about a teammate? Of course he's going to say he wants them to keep him, he would never respond to this question with "I hope they trade him and get some assets because we're rebuilding."

Also, do you see how he’s interacting with the guys at the ASG? Hank likes everyone. Even Crosby.

See I saw the same fact pattern and read it differently.

Girardi happened first. To me it was pretty clear that Slats was locked in on Boyle (had been for years) and Strålman was just a casualty.

It was only Girardi/Strålman on this board...that was a meme. Strålman was the “puck mover” that was being swapped out for Boyle...Strals and Girardi were completely different players in Sather’s eyes.
