Trading Barrie for Hayes makes zero sense for Avs. They need help on the blue line, they shouldn't be subtracting. Any Hayes trade will be for picks and/or prospects.

I’d still think he’s a depth guy . McQuaid will be dealt and maybe Staal waives to the right team
Interesting. I hadn’t thought of it. But maybe Staal does get moved. His contract and his play are much closer to each other than they have been in years. And the Rangers could eat some money, making him even more attractive. Good point. I doubt it happens, still. But it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Deadline deals are made using surplus. The Avs have 2 1st round picks. A couple of decent prospects. It's not hard to figure out the return. No one deals for playoff help by gouging out a new hole.

I am less convinced each day that we deal Hayes to Colorado. He will dip his toes in but will bow out when Winnipeg, Boston, etc up the bids. Sakic might make a trade for a guy like Schenn, who has term, but he isn't going to step up for a rental.

Hayes for Girard obviously

Was it 1 or 2 years ago we really zoomed in on LAK before the deadline? I never quite understood what those talks were about. Nothing really made sense. Doesn’t necessarily have to be the Avs we are looking at, maybe something picked up with LA again...

I think it was last year, and I think it was something like LA wanted Nash and the Rangers scouts were following Kempe around

i really dont know what happened to smith. one of the weirdest things ive ever seen. last year he was out of shape, this year hes skating like hes back in shape, but its almost like hes forgot how to pass the puck and defend. really dont get it. could it be a really severe confidence issue?

either way, were not getting rid of him unless its through buy out or trade for another bad deal. id rather keep him as spare D than have a kid called up to sit out. also dont care for him being sent down cause that takes playing time away from the prospects.

besides, we wont really need his cap space until after his deal is over, and if we need it before, just buy him out. id personally ride out the contract

I was far from a big fan of Smith that half a season he supposedly thrived for us. But he got super soft minutes with Skjei on the 3rd pair and when AV didn’t use him over the others we had many were tripping to be the loudest in trashing AV and hyping Smith to boost their argument further.

It wasn’t a good move by Gorts. I like Gorts, I really do, but I don’t buy the notion that he has been perfect for us. Think he needs to step it up quite a bit to be honest. But hey, I am sure he can learn too like the rest of us.

Who are we watching from the Avs?

They sent down Jost already, so it's definitely not him.

Just for the record, there is of course a process involved here and that includes updating our books of — everyone — that are options.

Like I’ve seen Kerfoot play a game or two and some highlights of him, I can sit here with my phone and claim to know a lot about him. I wouldnt be very interested, OK and a good add. But not someone I would target in a trade given the value he has. But if I was in charge of a NHL team I would want more than that before making a call on it. Maybe he improved a ton from the last time I saw him?

We have a group of pro scouts. They litterary create files on players 365 days a year, when hockey is played. Closer to the deadline we will utilize these guys to target certain potential parties and get a more comprehensive picture of more or less everyone on those teams.

My point is just, it’s interesting info but I wouldn’t read into it one bit if a player is sent down or not.

Barrie is not the type of futures Gorton is going to want or ask for.

Retain 50% on Barrie (this and next) and swing him elsewhere — plenty of teams looking for a RD. Barrie is a talent kid. Not sure why the Avs would deal him though...

I can't imagine them moving him now when their only other option is Erik Johnson. Makar isn't ready to jump into that role yet, Timmins has had concussion issues all season, and Meloche would only give them a good 3RD option right now.

I think it's just Adrian Dater throwing shit against a wall and seeing if it'll stick. He's also always been bringing up Barrie's name in relation to the Rangers because Slats always tried to get him. Dater should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
