I feel like there are different customers for Hayes and Duchene. Hayes is there to shore up your depth. Duchene will throw off team chemistry because he is too expensive and talented to not slot in at the top. Everything changes for him, Hayes is the move you make to alter one line.

Maybe.

I hope duchene stays in Ottawa regardless.

disagree with any notion to trade zibanejad. i think the part of trading everyone for a reason that isnt certain to happen is a bit of rebuild fever. if he wanted a NMC/NTC or whatever it is in his deal, theres proof he wouldnt want to be moved from here. by all accounts, he likes it here so why would be leave a contender to go elsewhere when we could be contending starting the last year of his deal.

also, were not getting necas. sorry but hes off limits according to all accounts

I don’t see any chance he stays. He demanded to be traded from Colorado because they sucked, why would his thinking change now on one of the worst teams in the league that’s only going to get worse when they sell off their best players at the deadline? I could honestly see Melnyk hold on to his ufa and lose them for nothing to save face with the few remaining fans they have and say we tried

I think Duchenes reputation is bad, like really bad. Many felt that he should just shut up and contribute on the ice instead of whining himself out of Colorado, and when these guys heard his comment on the assisting coach with the worst PK and PP in the league I just think there are more GMs out there that rather strangle the kid than trade for him.

I can see a few teams going after him. I am sure he can get a good contract in free agency. Some team, why not a LAK or SJ or a team like that, with strong leadership might feel that they can keep him in shack. Pittsburgh?

BUT, if there are 31 GMs in this league, I do think that there are like 25 that just wouldn’t be interested in him. That has a big impact on how much attention he actually will draw as a trade bait at the deadline. Just because both Hayes and Duchene are centers, there don’t have to be a lot of overlap among interested teams.

Gorton must try hard to salvage the Shattenkirk situation. Shatty is only 29. Get him out there as much as you can on the PP and what not. Plant more Zucc like stories, ‘now he has figured it out’. It’s the old Shatty again. Retain as much as you can and request an OK asset in return. If Dion Phaneuf can be moved twice it shouldn’t be impossible to move Shatty.

Didn't he want out of Colorado because he was rumored to be available for like 3 years before he finally got moved?

Gorts probably need to be a bit of a magician to hit a home run this deadline — but I think he is prepared for it and have laid the ground work. If we have learned anything it’s that you have to have laid the groundwork and really be prepared to make things work, many GMs out there might want to get things done — but how prepared will they be?

It’s of course not realistic all the way, but something like the concept I pitched the other day might be possible to get done. Like get Talbot and futures from EDM in one trade, deal Talbot and a forward to Carolina for Justin Fualk and futures, deal Justin Faulk to Toronto for futures.

What did that one GM that Friedman quoted call us, a one stop shop? We have something for everyone. If you just auction off a few assets to the highest bidder the return will be so-so in general. But if you can find someone that really is a match, then it’s possible to get a more substantial return.

I believe you are correct. And then he was supposed to be traded before the start of last season and he surprisingly wasn’t and it carried over akwardly into the season until he was finally traded a month or 2 in if I recall correctly.

The most interesting topic to follow leading up to the deadline is from my POV not who else might be available, ie on the sell side, it’s monitoring the buy side. Just look at the top of the standings. Many of the top teams will do something. But how interesting are Pittsburgh or Washington or Nashville or SJ and co? If however a team like Buffalo feels like ‘hey we are in it, why not give the boys a little help?’ the flexibility they will have will be something else.

But Kreider will be older in 21-22 than Zibanejad would be, and his output is lower right now than Zibanejad's. If the objective is to have the better player available for our "competition window", and the choice is Kreider vs Zibanejad, it seems Zibanejad is the way to go. We also don't know what Zibanejad'd next contract will look like.

My point was "the age at which they are signing a 7ish-year contract." In that case, Kreider would be younger. If our window is open for literally one year, then Zbad is a great fit...but it will be impossible to trade him, and a much bigger risk to sign him for 7 years when he's 29. If we could sign him to a contract that ends when he's 33-34, then sign me up.

i dont think zibanejad is guaranteed to command a 7-year deal. with the league trending younger, times are changing. they’re already changing as it is now, and in another 3-4 years i highly doubt any 30 year olds will be signing 7 year deals.

I only trade Zib if we are getting an improvement in his position.

Random thought: interesting trade "targets" for the TDL - all these contracts expire in 2020. Realistically, don't see up milking anyone for a 1st round pick just for taking these contracts for a year.
Callahan (TB) - perennial cup contenders always need cap space. upcoming RFAs Point, Sergachev, Vasilevsky
Horton (TOR) - they could use the space for Marner/Matthews
Hanzal (DAL) - practically speaking, the Stars have zero cap space, seem to have pressure from owner, are in the thick of the WC playoff race
MacArthur (OTT) - they are tanking but they might want cap/wallet space to resign all their players

Are they planning to buy out Brendan Smith? Seems like they have given up on him or decided to make him a scapegoat. Twice this season he was scratched right after putting up points.

Any GM that is going to use the Uber incident as a reason to avoid Duchene is a dope. Every single NHL team has groups of players having the same exact type of discussion they were having, the only difference is they got sold out by a loser Uber driver with a video camera. You don't think the Rangers players were talking shit about Tom Renney during the end of his tenure here? You think it was all smiles and laughs when the team would go weeks without scoring a PP goal under Torts? Only teams that "can keep him in check" are going to be interested? What does that even mean, keep him in check? Is Sidney Crosby going to duct tape his mouth shut everytime he gets into a cab? Ridiculous. It's NHL buzzwords and catchphrases like these that make no sense but that get thrown around incessantly that drive me absolutely crazy. 25 GMs aren't interested in Duchene? That's absurd.

Listen to Elliotte Friedman's 31 Thoughts podcast from this week. He's more tapped into NHL front offices then anyone not named Bob Mckenzie. He talked at length about Ottawa and Duchene. Nobody cares about the Uber incident if Matt Duchene is playing how he's capable of playing. It doesn't matter.

Duchene's reputation is not bad. Want a possible surprise team if he is made available? Arizona.

Shattenkirk is really looking much better lately. I don't know if it enough to build his trade value this season though. Still a long time to run on that contract. Perhaps this time, next year?

He has not looked f***ing fine. Shattenkirk sucks! Disaster in the own zone and a freaking failure to produce offense. Send him the f*** away from the rangers asap.

FWIW, playing Ryan Lindgren with Shatty instead of Smith is tanking the value of both vets.

Though I guess Shatty gets an opportunity to prove he can defend in his own end because Lindgren makes sure that is where they are going to spend all their TOI.
