Not to go back to Pulju, but just a note... even *if* the Rangers are not interested in him, they could still use him as a potential trade chip elsewhere (thinking how Hoffman stayed in division last off-season going from OTT > SJS > FLA).
You are right, but it’s a catch 22 situation. EDM will never deal Pulju for the same reason they are ruining him. They think it’s more value in keeping him hoping that he will ‘get it’ than what they can get for him in a trade, not realizing that they need to develop a kid to make him a player. And that they suck so much and have so little support that they never can develop him — or any other kid they have now and in the future that doesn’t have a perfect spot sitting and waiting for them.
If you develop like a Chris Kreider like you have Pulju everyone would claim that you are INSANE. But then people thinking like EDM would counter — Kreider wasn’t a 3rd overall pick like Pulju. The problem is that the only kids you can think like that about is more or less someone like McDavid. Certainly not someone like Pulju, Nolan Patrick, even Matthews probably and co. These kids need a ton of support.
Pulju compares really well to Jonathan Drouin in this regard. Another 3OA pick. Many don’t think that a team can ruin a player. Yzerman was patient with Drouin. Left him in juniors a year. Then up and down the NHL/AHL for a couple of years. Easing him in, holding him back and only playing him in situations he couldn’t fail in. Eventually Drouin thought he was held back too much and asked out, but that is another issue. EDM would have yanked him out of the CHL year 1 and given him top minutes from the start, then reduced his ice time when he failed to deliver gradually down to zero, also of course ruining his confidence . Then they would have kept him in on a small role on an extremely awful team for 3-4 years before losing him for nothing. They did the same with Yaks.
Drouin is an OK top 6 player for MTL. Not more not less. I saw him the other night, there isn’t much room for error with a kid like that, he was brought in the right way, with patience and mostly with very good support when he played. Kept his confidence up. Who knows where he is today if he is picked by EDM that does the complete opposite with him.
Today, in 2019, a kid is a kid no matter where he is picked. Unless he is named McDavid. So Puljus value can only go up and it would be a very good move to get him. But EDM will be all about ‘his value cannot go down so let’s keep him’. Chia de facto wanted to give Lucic a chance to turn it around this season. Look at Lucic in the NHL last season and ask yourself — is there any chance whatsoever that this guy can ‘turn it around’ and even remotely start to perform like a high paid player. The answer can not be anything else than a no. The fact that Chia thought that it was worth a shot says all you need to know about him.
