McQuaid is literally what McIlrath was supposed to be. Big tough strong crease clearing d-man with a mean streak and can fight. And if you think about it, that’s terrible draft management going with a third pairing d-man with the 10th pick.

Excuse me conqueror, what do you think we got in exchange for Talbot?

Talbot had a Vezina-caliber 2015-16 season.
If you look at his performance since the trade, a 2 and a 3 is a pretty great return. Talbot had a good season backing up a great team, but I wouldn't sell the vezina that low.

Colorado might be a prime spot for Hayes but with the way they’re playing who knows if they’ll even wanna deal anything for this year. Sakic knows he has what could be the first overall pick this year. He knows he has Winnipeg and Nashville in his division. Maybe the better play is to see his window as next year or the year after when those two teams are suffering cap issues? Who knows though because he has two guys playing like Hart candidates this year, can’t bank on that being the cases everybody year.

This is why being a GM is so tough. You wanna win now but also not sacrifice your future and in a cap world it’s more and more difficult to overcome “win now” trades and stuff. But also you can sometimes worry about the future so much that the present never happens and you’re just spinning your wheels every year.

We sold high and won

I explained for almost 4 years now how the return was fair, considering Talbot being a backup, and his contract situation not being ideal and people always responded how Talbot is a starting goalie. Even if he was, he wasn't at the time of the trade.

Now, 3.5 years later Talbot is losing out to Koskinen, who isn't a worldbeater. I've been thinking a lot about what nyr2k2 said about Benoit Allaire. How good is he really? What has he really done aside from Lundqvist?

Al Montoya, Chad Johnson, Cam Talbot, Antti Raanta, Dan Blackbun, Jason Missiaen, Matt Zaba, Brandon Halverson, Mackenzie Skapski.

At some point, we have to look at the fact that he has not really "elevated" any goalie's level aside from Lundqvist and if that's the case, how much of that is on Lundqvist just being an elite talent?

I’d take Talbot back for the remainder of this season. Edmonton can promptly send over a 3rd ‘19 to do so. Georgiev gets lots of starts in Hartford and an split time with Talbot when they inevitably shut Hank down later this year.

One thing I feel many people here lose sight of is that a GM does not always have the clear opportunity to make their team better. It's easy to sit here and play Monday morning quarterback and say we should have traded for this person or should have signed that Ufa but they miss out more often than make the move. GMJG is in the easy part tight now, accumulating assets.... And I think he is doing a good job but the hard part is knowing when to start making that Uturn to start becoming competitive. You need to start doing it before it's crystal clear you have the right parts and you have to be decisive about it. It's what I feel most GMs screw up.... They are too scared to make a mistake and aren't bold enough.

As long as there weren’t two other highly successful goalies, in addition to Lundqvist, who credit Allaire with a big impact on their careers.

Every time someone mentions the McIlrath pick, a baby Unicorn dies.

Talbot had a Vezina-caliber 2015-16 season.

Talbot got 0 Vezina votes in 15-16. Lundqvist put up better numbers in 15-16 and he as well got no votes a well.

Talbot re-signed in EDM for 4M a year. We had no business paying a back up that much.

I forget what we got for Talbot but it was like a 2nd 5th 6th? Goalies usually have crappy value. And Cam only had 1 year left on his deal.

Not sure where you’re trying to go with this bud.

Reasons why Talbot's value was low in 2015:

- No RFA years left
- On a 1-year contract, which limited negotiations for the acquiring team
- Talbot was a career backup at the time
- Other, younger (cost-controlled) goalies on the market

I am very reluctant to buy in on a Hayes-Colorado trade but there is a feeling of the McDonagh-Toronto drama from last year. Gorton is relatively tight lipped but there are leaks, intentional or otherwise. I don't think a single rumor linking Hayes to another team has surfaced to this point. Tons of scouting. Daily article speculating an Avs trade are posted by NY beat writers. Lots of smoke. Throw in the part about the player being held out of action nurse a nagging injury.

What's interesting is the timing. If Sakic were given an opportunity to talk contract with Hayes, this part of the schedule couldn't be better. Bye week and All Star break. Maybe enough to get a structure and general idea, but nothing inked. Confidence to up the ante and pull the trigger for a guy like Sakic.

Drawing on the deals (Nash and McDonagh) last year we get an idea. The team's own 1st. No top rookies. Sergrachev, McAvoy, Donato, Point. Not the top prospect. Foote for example. So no Makar. But we get a high level, NHL-likely, prospect. Plus sweeteners. Conditional picks or throw ins.

So the question is how much does a signed Hayes raise the return from a Nash level to something higher, but not quite to the McDonagh area.

I can't see Gorton settling for just Jost and a 1st for Hayes, signed or not. But the precedents are there. If Hayes is signed I see another high pick, like a future 1st or 2nd, and a roster player. Take out the pick for another prospect.

Edit: Shane Bowers from the Duchene trade has been speculated as well. I'm not a big prospect guy but others mentioned the Quinn connection and he's a big center.
Jost + Col 1st 2019 + Ott 3rd + Conditional Col 2nd 2020 (If Col makes WCF or if Hayes re-signs)

for

Hayes + Lettieri
