"Of the two, Hayes is the more attractive of the two as a potential acquisition. He's 26, while Zuccarello is 31. He's a big center, while Zuccarello is a small winger. What do the Avs, arguably, need the most right now in their drive to the playoffs? A No. 2 center. (I said "arguably", as Carl Soderberg has been a very good No. 2 of late).
But there is almost no chance the Avs will trade for Kevin Hayes by Feb. 25, and here's why: The Avs are simply not going to give away top prospects or top draft picks for any short-term help this season. If Kevin Hayes had three or four years left on his contract, at his current salary ($5.175 million), they might consider moving a nice pick and/or prospect for him."

Why trading for Kevin Hayes seems like a bad idea - and almost certainly won't happen

The Rangers are a mediocre-to-poor team with a big, bloated payroll

Our payroll isn't even in the top third of the league right now. I think I've got it figured out- Dater is stuck in 2012. This and the Barrie rumor are a cry for help.

Dater is a muppet. Who cares what the Avs need for the playoffs? It's not like their need for a #2 center suddenly vanishes in the summer. Not unless they win the Hughes lottery.

If Gorton and Sakic can settle on pieces they like then it seems like a no-brainer to me. Sakic needs to make some moves to improve that team. Their fans seem to be totally content with another losing season and a lottery pick but something tells me their front office and ownership isn't particularly happy with 3 post season visits in the last 10 years or wasting a year of perhaps the best line in hockey on cheap contracts.

Oh, it was Dater? Carry on...

Dater is not known for being particularly insightful. I do however agree with his premise that Colorado isn’t going to empty the closet to trade for Hayes or anyone else. The one thing that might tilt this is if Sakic is given a chance to talk with Hayes about the future. Weren’t the Avs the runner ups to the Rangers for Hayes?

Eh, I know it’s what many here want and expect. But contract and age wise, Kreider this year is essentially McD last year. Both known as good athletes (though obvious edge Kreider) with some mileage issues (close edge Kreider) considered to be first liners (edge McD).

I wouldn’t be surprised if Kreider was in play more than we think right now. I’m not even sure I agree with it, but I think this board may be underrating the possibility he gets moved in the next month and over-expecting what he would return.
Tend to agree with this.

The letter wasn’t just referencing McD (Miller as it turns out), Grabner and Nash. I think Zucc and Hayes and Kreider were in there also.

That isn’t to say we won’t keep Kreider until next deadline or won’t resign him but I also feel the letter wasn’t just about the obvious

I don’t think we can move:

Hayes
Zucc
McQuaid
Fast
Claesson
Namestnikov
Vesey

And ice a team.

Moving players for future assets is 1 thing. Gutting 1/2 your team for anything is another.

Is anyone else okay with not being able to ice a team for the last 30 games? Of course you need some vet leadership for a rebuild. But here we go again winning just too many games for a top 3-5 pick instead projecting into the 7-12 range at the current pace. We should be giving all the young kids ice moving forward and heavily increasing our chances for Hughes.

Hayes, Zuccarello, Vesey, Claesson. McQuaid should all be moved.

Fast, I don’t think you move under any circumstance as he’s an elite 3rd line player and has a vet game that translates into older years. He’ll never demand a contract that bootstraps us because of lack of points but has a game that will always be more valuable than his contract as long as he’s not thrust into a top 6 role.

Somehow Dater broke the news about the 2013 lockout ending. He was the first to report that Saturday night/Sunday morning in January 2013.

He isn’t wrong about Hayes though.

Sakic isn’t meeting the Rangers ask for Hayes. Sign and trade? When was the last time that happened? Ever? Sakic isn’t giving the Rangers enough for Zibanejad. Kreider represents the middle of Hayes and Zibanejad. He is signed for one more season. Colorado has time to re-sign him and he gives them another option. Bednar has tried to break up his big three and spread the offense around.

The deadline is five weeks from today. It will be less than four weeks when the Rangers play again. 14 more games. It can’t come soon enough. The Rangers will hold players out of the lineup as the deadline gets closer. They sat Nash and Grabner with 3 games left to the deadline.

Something is going on with the Rangers and Avs. Risebrough has been watching them for a while. Maxwell joined him in Toronto last week to watch the Avs. Then they flew to Denver to watch the Avs and their AHL team on Saturday. Maxwell is their head pro scout. The Rangers did the same thing with TB last season.

The Avs are hosting Nashville today.

The West wildcard is wide open. The Rangers can leverage some of the teams. If you don’t acquire this player, you’re competition will be getting him. Zuccarello would look good on those West teams looking for a winger. He would be a good fit in Boston. That team has 5 quality forwards. Chicago and LA are the only teams out in the West. Does Arizona make a move? Edmonton looks so lost. Carolina pounded them last night. Calgary took it to them on Saturday. They have to make the playoffs or everyone is getting fired. Anaheim is not a likely buyer. They are a weird team. Minnesota made an awful trade last week and they are a win now team. Vancouver is right there. Dallas. Colorado. All of them are within a 3-4 points of each other. The Blues are playing in LA today. With a win the Blues have 49 points. Right back in the wildcard and the division too.

Hopefully, Ottawa re-signs both Stone and Duchene. They made both players quality offers. 8 years and $64M for Duchene. Dreger tweeted it will take 8 years at $65M to $75M to keep Duchene. They are right there. Both of those players off the market would be great for the Rangers.

More teams involved in the playoff race and the Ottawa guys staying creates a seller’s market.

I'm really doubtful the avs feel they are a Kevin Hayes away from a cup. If they do then they haven't watched the other teams in the league.

Chytil’s future is at center. Look at all of his goals. The majority of them have come on the right side. The Rangers have him playing left wing. The scoring chances he creates are from the right side. He made a great pass to Hayes in the Leafs game before Christmas. Right side. He can make plays on the left side. He made a nice pass on a two on one to Kreider for a one timer in the Ottawa game at home.

Big and strong centers are hard to find. I not saying Chytil is Sasha Barkov but Chytil is going to get bigger and stronger as he gets older. He is 19 years old. I read here a few weeks ago that Chytil would be an OK player and they were signing Kreider’s praises. Kreider was a sophomore at BC at the same age and Chytil is playing in the NHL.

I think all the last few weeks so is make it clear that Chytil’s future is probably at right wing.

I’m sure they’ll give him another shot at center and they should, but they also shouldn’t force him to play in a position where he’ll be less effective if it becomes abundantly clear that is the case.

Here’s my thing with a Chytil at center: he can be as dynamic there as he is at wing, he just needs to be given the time to grown into the role and to let his decision making become second nature, if the organization has the patience for it, he’ll be a center

Nothing but my own speculation, but I think that the Rangers are looking at Soderberg on Colorado. He has two years left at 5 million if I'm not mistaken. They may look to take on his contract to sweeten the return for Hayes.

Except that Soderberg is having a good season.
