I’ve felt all along the best strategy is to identify the players who can be part of the core of a serious playoff team. The Rangers have between 8 and 10 players I consider in this group. That’s about 4-5 short. So what does this mean?
1. Trading Georgiev for a quality player adds one. 2. Identifying players who are not part of the future core and monetizing them for assets that can be part of that core. Skeji and Buchnevich are clearly candidates for this designation. So are guys like McKegg and Smith but they hold little value. 3, Determine whether assets like Fast and Kreider (can be resigned) and if they can’t, they will have to be monetized. The sad part of this is that moving these guys removes core players that will weaken the team. Best hope is that if Kreider is moved, he can return a future core player. Step 2 comes before step 3 — set the standard for the future roster and then work to,keep, the pieces that make sense. 4. Strome is an RFA, the Rangers sign him for a longer term or force him into a one year contract and see if he continues his current performance. 5. Find one or two card carrying mature NHL players who can fill roles on the bottom part of the roster.
