Revisionist history. McIlrath for all his shortcomings was high on a number of teams lists. Edmonton had him in their top seven (source: Oil Change TV show) and Dallas would have probably taken him at #11 if the Rangers didn’t (source: former Stars scout) Andersson would have gone 9th to Detroit.

Of course, the picks look bad in retrospect. All top picks that don’t work out do.

Hindsight is 20-20.
Except Tarasenko was there at 10 and the NYR needed offense badly at the time. Plus he was BPA.

The NYR thought (and had made that mistake before and would again) that they were the smartest in the room.

They weren’t and it prob cost us in 2014

Long story short, those misses cost u

I wonder if something like this could be a start for Nylander.

Buch, Georgiev, Lias and a 3rd to Toronto for Nylander and a 2nd
Just my opinion but you’d probably have to remove the draft picks and replace Lias with Kravtsov. Maybe not though. I just think Nylander is a pretty great player, and this hugely improves our roster without making worse.

IMO, Georgiev + Lias + 3rd is roughly equal to a late 1st.

Last I checked, 14 other teams passed on Tarasenko.

Like I said, hindsight is 20-20.

Colorado would be a good chance for Hank to get a cup. They've been getting inconsistent goaltending so I'm sure they're doing their due diligence to see what's out there. I doubt they'd pull the trigger though.

Wouldn't be the first time that Colorado acquires a future hall of famer in an effort to win a cup. Worked the first time, maybe they think it can happen again.

Might be the best place for him to go. That offensive talent and the high level on their defense is exactly what he needs. They'd possibly become the favorites to win the whole thing.

I don't want to be like a debbie downer or anything but signing guys like Kreider and Strome effectively puts a window on this team.

That means they'd have to win within the next 2 years while Zibanejad is still on his current deal, and Kakko, Chytil, Igor, Kravstov, and Fox are all on their ELC, before they have to pay all of them

Plus you have to pay Tony assuming he's still around

It's not the right time to commit money to free agents imo

I really would like to find a way to keep kreider but if you are going into a contract thinking you can just buy him out later than maybe you should rethink signing the deal in the first place...I know its an 'out' if things go bad but if you are planning on things going bad...

oh I don’t think they’d be thinking that. But I am. It doesn’t scare me at all. The guy is a phenom freak athlete. His skating is all world. Guys that can skate play for a long time in this league. A 7 year deal takes him to age 35.

we want to be heavier and play more north south. Chris Kreider is your guy.

need a guy to play in front on the powerplay and is the top scoring deflection specialist in the league. Chris Kreider is your guy

you want to play fast. No one faster than Chris Kreider.

want someone that has chemistry with your top center. Chris Kreider

want someone that is a great influence on the kids and has played in big games and is actually better come playoff time? Chris Kreider.

this isn’t a hard decision for me.

With all the dead cap space we have next year, I don't understand why some are so eager to buy players out for next season.

I think the real motivation with buying someone out is opening up a roster spot..

I’m looking at you, Marc Stallll. o_O

I agree on Nylanders skill. I think this gives them a great Backup, a lower cost top 6 winger and a Change of scenery top 10 pick who has something to prove on a ELC in cup competing years. It' not perfect, but I think something can be done

Well there is always a buyout option, not that I think anyone would like it, but it's an option all the same.
When it comes to Henke, I really do not see that as being an option. They do not want that public, messy break up.

The one that didn’t has a cup and we needed his skills BADLY. I don’t care about the 3 teams that passed after us. There was a large consensus here that we were gifted him and we blew it. BIG TIME
Yeah hindsight is 20/20 but when u blow a consensus pick SO massively u deserve to be chastised for it.
In this case, AND THEN SOME

Did you see the screen stat shown that since 2015-2016, Kreider leads the NHL in tip ins? Like 31 or 32.

Yeah, saw that. Impressive. He brings a rare combination of size, speed and skill that is quite valuable. If he were a couple years younger I would have no problem signing him. But this team is not competing for a cup for the next year or two so I'm not looking to sign him to a 7 year deal to get two years of relevant play from him.

Are you seeing their production? It’s nowhere near anything that they’ve ever done. No one is saying Strome isn’t a good player. Again I have to repeat myself for some reason.
Where did I say that you believe that Strome is not a good player? And yes, I am seeing their production. I am also seeing Panarin's production which is also NOWHERE near anything that he has ever done. Again, I have to repeat myself for some reason.
But I think he’s internally replaceable without hurting this team where a Kreider is not.
Also what we are not debating. Now if you want to pivot to Krieder vs. Strome for the future, please let me know and we can take the discussion there.

Oh stop it Larry. We dont need to be handcuffed with another long term 6M+ contract on a guy who will be declining sooner than later. There comes a time you need to worry about making sure you will have money for our top guns like Kakko, Shest, DeAngelo, Fox etc...oh and did i mention they money to re-sign Mika in a couple years?

Yeah, just stirring the pot. As if a few weeks of stellar play changes anything in the overall picture.

I get it, yet I also think they would probably get over the break-up pretty quickly. I mean they've made their rebuild intentions pretty clear.

Larry has officially pivoted to team Sign Kreider
And then in 6 weeks when they trade Kreider, he’ll whine just like he did when Hayes was moved

Some people have no long term vision

Welcome to Larry World.

He'll also be the first one to post an article questioning the wisdom of signing Kreider if things go sideways a few years into the contract.

That's the beauty of being a commentator, you can provide all of the opinions but have none of the accountability.

I think that there are some lines that do not get crossed. This one of them.

Also adding to it, I do not think that they are buying out anyone. The contracts come off the books in 1.5 years. They will wait.

I have no idea what they'll actually do, just seems like if they ended up buying him out that would linger right up until they did something else. I'd think they could take the one Brooks article which poo poos them for doing so and just move on.
