Lundqvist, 37, who has yet to hoist the Stanley Cup, is under contract through 2020-21, with an $8.5 million annual cap hit but just a $5.5 million salary next season. His contract would expire when Colorado begins paying big money to Gabe Landeskog and Cale Makar, whose current deals also end next season.

Currently, the Avs have the cap space and prospects/draft picks to entice “King Henrik” to waive his no-trade clause to a Cup contender in a move similar to when legendary defenseman Ray Bourque came to the Avs late in the 1999-2000 season. In search of the Cup heading into his 40th birthday, Bourque helped Colorado win it in 2001.

Lundqvist could be that guy for the Avs in 2020 or 2021, and the Rangers are undoubtedly looking at trading one of their three goalies. That’s not a typo — New York is carrying three goalies, including two young ones in Alexandar Georgiev, 23, and Igor Shesterkin, 24 — the latter of whom defeated the Avs in his NHL debut Jan. 7 in New York.

The Rangers would be so lucky to have the Avs take Lundqvist off of their hands. No more three goalie rotation.

The Rangers retain 50% of the remaining contract. The Rangers get back compensation. Lundqvist goes to a potential Cap contender. The Rangers protect Georgiev in the expansion draft. Shesterkin is exempt. Too perfect of a scenario.

Even Georgiev is an upgrade for the Avs.

I see some of those posts here about trading Georgiev for that smurf Bracco and a pick. Get the f*** out of here. My 14 year old niece is taller than Bracco.

This is mildly interesting because I could see Lundqvist actually giving some consideration to a team like Colorado. Just like it worked out for Bourque, getting that Cup would be huge for him and with Landeskog as the captain, he may be able to convince Hank to waive. That’s captain Sweden. Also a guy like Foppa could probably get on the phone with Hank and tell him how great winning a Cup in Colorado feels. His old running mate Sakic could easily call in that favor.

Maybe we could sell them Hank and Kreider, both at 50% and get a pretty decent haul to set up our future.

Holding out hope this ends up being the course. Perhaps Henrik can do some soul searching and be assured by the organization that his legacy/future ceremonies/jersey number will remain in tact.

In terms of career comp, Patrick Ewing has a lot in common with Henrik. No one remembers that 38-year-old Ewing had 79 games as a Seattle Super Sonic.

Shesterkin and Georgiev for the next 9 years. Please. Common sense.

I know they have space but do they have that much space?

I wonder if having the 3 goalies is part of the plan to convince Hank to move on from the Rangers?

The stuff about Lundqvist aside, there’s no chance Igor and Alex will be a long term situation. Medium term, maybe. What not having Hank around would do is push the need to make a decision about which one to have as the long-term starter down the road a little bit. Ultimately, one will be dealt.

Sorry, I don't see it happening. He's had two chances to go to a contender and has turned them down flat. It's obvious he wants to retire as a Ranger. I honestly believe he'll retired before considering going elsewhere.

I've been pushing Henrik to the Avs for a while now. The story writes itself. Package him with Kreider and Lias and get one of their big prospects back. Henrik can go to a team with a chance to win it all.

And both of those times were before the Rangers started going with a 3 goalie rotation. I don't doubt his conviction and wanting to remain a Ranger, and at the end of the day it's still the most likley scenario, but also at the end of the day, things have certainly changed on the Rangers in regards to goaltending. He's not the number 1 anymore, and soon he might not even be the number 2.

It won’t happen. Hank would rather hang out in the big city than win a cup.

If JD and Gorton went to Hank and said look we're planning on giving all the starts to Georgiev and Shestyorkin going forward cap be damned, I really wonder if Hank would call their bluff and stick around until the end of next season.

Interesting. I guess the question is, how cutthroat are JD and JG going to be. How confident are they that Henrik isn’t the best guy to help develop Shesterkin. I frankly would be very surprised if it weren’t Henrik and Igor going forward. (This is my preference, Henrik tutoring Igor for all of next year). But anything can happen and this is a little-discussed possibility. JD and JG going HAM on Henrik.

That’s entirely false. Of course a Shesterkin/Georgiev tandem can be a long-term solution,

I'd wager at least 67% on this board would happily resign CK if he accepted a 5 year contract at $6M AAV

Why would Kreider ever accept that? He's already going to take a huge discount tax-wise just to play in NYC. Players almost never take discounts like that, especially when we're talking about middling numbers (the difference between 11 and 12 million is far different than that of 6 versus 7).

Moreover, the question isn't what Kreider will cost in $, we largely know that. The question is WHO Kreider will cost us down the line. Who won't we be able to re-sign? Who will we have to move to fit him. If he signs any deal longer than 4 years, almost our entire roster will be due a raise before then.

Are you willing to part with one or several of the following? ADA, Fox, Kaako, Kravtsov, Shesterkin/Georgiev, Chytil, etc? Because there's no way we can have Trouba, Panarin and Kreider on the cap & pay those guys what they will eventually command.

I think we should be looking to move Trouba ASAP and then that might open up some other doors. But as of now, that seems unlikely.

Ergo retirement. If he cared about winning a Cup, he had a better chance two years ago (and even last year) than he does now.
