I agree that he is the best center we’ve had in a long time, but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the right move to resign him.
Zibanejad will be 29 when the new contract begins and I have serious concerns about how well he will age in the NHL.
If he winds up making prime money for the next 7 years, how long will he be able to live up to that cap hit? 3 years? 4 years? Is he going to become a burden just as the team’s contending window starts to open? I like Zibanejad as a player, but I don’t like the timeline.
Agreed 100% But not 150%... more to it... I'm sure you can see, there is no viable replacement foreseeable... That's really why you have to draft guys like these, not sign, and it's never worth so much as attempting to get a bona fide number one center on an ELC through trade... It's really the only way to do it. Winning teams have a bargain star or two... They took considerable risk on Mika as an RFA... Now there will be no way to get him for 7X7, for example. Now, a lot of that has to do with him being kind of a late bloomer, but even more to do with the fact that the Rangers have never been risk takers... Shooting yourself in the foot is another story, that's a time honored tradition... but Chytil, for example, maybe you should have been extended for a couple more years @ 4M... Granted, I'm not the best eye for talent - I leave that up to you guys, crystal ball stuff - but it makes sense in general. Give a young kid, who just scored at a 1/2 PPG a slightly more appropriate rate. He not only gains confidence but usually takes one for the team long-term.
Still, pesronalities, lots to consider. Only sure thing with this team is that we're nearly upon the issues of the 1%. Who do you keep[, who do you throw out to extend your shot?
Psst... not centers (and we're on a very bad track there). I'll have another LW. Does Drury know all hockey-related decisions are ultimately his, or do they just in the hamster wheel? I like the play Roth Monger present Bob,
