theres nothing I like about this deal other than liking Shesterkin a lot of course.

4 years takes him exactly to where Mika and Kreider ended up. In their primes looking for huge money. That’s where Shesterkin will be asking us for 9 mil or god knows what at 29. A lundqvist contract. We should have bridged him if this was what we were going to do. This puts us in no mans land.

So when you take into consideration the performance bonus overage, depending on who you talk to, the Rangers still have about $6MM in cap space with 24 signed players.

To be honest I don't hate it...the Rangers can spend the next 4 years looking to develop another goalie. Garand perhaps, maybe another draft pick, maybe see someone they want to sign ala Georgiev etc
I like Shesty but if at the end of this contract he wants a huge payday and teh Rangers have options I don't mind seeing them walk from him and find a different goalie

Henrik signed a 1 year extension for 4.25M after his ELC was up. 8.45% of the teams cap space. Following season he signed a 6 year extension for 6.875M. 13.67% of the teams cap space.

Igor’s locked up till 2025. 6.95% of the teams cap space. We all wish the term was a little longer and the cap hit was a little lower, but it’s not a bad deal in comparison.

There are a couple of nice goalie prospects next season. Tyler Brennan. Topias Leinonen. Gibson Homer. Dylan Ernst. Scoop one of them up in the 2nd or 3rd and see what happens down the road.

I was hoping he signed for league minimum at 8 years! Dang!

Imagine complaining about the Shesterkin contract. If he has more years on the deal, the AAV goes north of 7. His agent and the player are also negotiating. If you give him a 2 year deal and he is as good as we expect, you're paying out of the nose for him when Lafreniere's ELC is done.

We have cost certainty in nets for 4 years. We don't need to pay for a 1B goalie. Shesterkin is the guy. We're set in net for at least 4 years. They've drafted goalies each of the past few drafts. Any one of those guys pans out, you could realistically walk away if he wants too much at 29.

Not to mention, the players and agents know when the cap is going up. A 4 year deal puts him in position to cash in when the debt is paid off to the owners due to COVID. The cap will explode that offseason and contracts will be through the roof.

Wait… people are upset with this Igor contract? Wut?

I mean the guy hasn't even played a full season of hockey and just landed a $5.66 million dollar a year contract.

The guy had a great 11 game stretch in he debut in 2019-20. Started off very slow in 20/21 and had better numbers as the season went on................that gets you $5.66 Million a year??? I see why people are scratching their heads.

I would have liked a 5th season, but he’s also had 2 years where he was injured. I know that’s not all his fault, but 6-7 year deal right now is too risky. It would have probably cost about 7 mill per if they went that route. Maybe more

or we could have drafted walstedt who was the bpa at 15.

he will want a big payday and at 29 we’ll feel obliged to give it to him.

Hank was a vezina finalist during his first contract and Igor hasn't even played a full season. they're not comparable.

What's the problem with that? A 6 or 7 year deal at that point takes him to 35-36. That's perfectly reasonable. In comparison, Hank was 32 when we gave him a 7 year big money extension that locked him up until 39. Big difference.

Hank started 53 games as a rookie, was on the all-rookie team, was a Calder finalist and a Vezina finalist as a rookie and then he followed that up by starting 70 games in his second year and was a Vezina finalist again. Led the Rangers to the playoffs in both seasons as well.

Hank was on another level.
