Hayes isn't a 3C unless we're talking about the US National Team.
Where does he fit on Toronto, Tampa, Pitsbutgh or Washington? Those are the good teams in the East.

Wing.
Even then the only team he is used in the top 6 would be Pittsburgh.

You don't think he could supplant Alex Killorn or Jakub Vrana?
Hell, Hayes is way better than Ondrej Palat at this point.

None of those teams would have the cap to extend him anyway.Brings a totally different game and Hayes doesnt want to play wing so I doubt any team that acquires him will be able to extend him at wing.

I don't think any of those teams would be interested or would acquire him to play center.Or the Leafs
Or the Bolts
Or the Pens
Or the Bruins
Or the Caps
Or...
Well, you get the point.
Which is exactly what the article said/implied.

Only the Rangers are dumb enough to pay for 1st liners at the deadline and put them on the 3rd line.

Perhaps.
But I was just replying to your comment.
My point was he's not a 3C.
I didn't read the article, so if they simply implied that some teams have no place for him, then that's a different point.
I mean, if I had enough talent, I'd love Crosby to be a 3C on my team.I dunno, I think you might be surprised by how many teams would view him as a third line center they'd love in certain situations.
Of course you would. But, if you're taking your opponents chip stack, table position and, general play style into account then there are times where the latter may be the correct play. And I mean that for both the poker and hockey reference..

Those teams would still be way overpaying relative to the minutes he'd be getting, and setting themselves up to not extend him.
Then again, if that's what they think is taking them to a Cup, they may entertain it.
I think you might also see team's who view him as no worse than a guy who can play second line center easily, and then be shifted to the third line --- especially as the cap goes up and the value of the contract calls in relative value.
So, let's use a team like the Avs as a potential example. They go out and they get someone like Hayes to push this year and get a center to play behind MacKinnon. Theoretically, they still have their eyes very much set on Jack Hughes. Don't think for a moment they wouldn't love to be able to flip-flop Hayes into a third line role in a reasonably short period of time.
Not sure SJ wouldn't kick those tires if EK doesn't resign.
There are others, though whether Hayes would want to go there remains doubtful.
The Avs make a lot of sense because they definitely need a Hayes right now, and Hughes is still very much a maybe.
Other teams mentioned in this thread have no place to put him that would warrant the price.
