Hey realistic question, do u think we can trade for jake virtanen? Righr winger, 23, former sixth overall, doesnt get much ice time, maybe we can pick him up?

I don’t think we’d like what we’d have to give up. It looks like the time to buy low on him has passed.

Unless the Canucks are buyers at the deadline and want Kreider I guess.

We missed the boat on Virtanen. He was thought of as a bust for a while, good to see him busting out. The buy low guy we should be looking at now is Puljujarvi.

Yeah Virtanen was a name who was widely panned on this board anytime his name came up as a trade target. He's playing very well right now and looks like he's finally turned a corner. You're probably not prying him loose now at all, let alone with Lias Andersson.

Just shows that sometimes players take time to find their game and that calling people a bust after 2 or 3 years is ridiculous. Food for thought with our own prospects. Andersson included.

He produced last year without Panarin. I don't get the all the Strome hate, it's crazy.
Hate? Why are we calling criticism hate?

He scored at a 0.5 PPG clip last year. Sustainability arguments aside, I'd hardly consider that "producing" in the context of what he is currently doing with Panarin. His next extension will likely at least command a $5.5-6M AAV, would you be satisfied with 0.5 PPG production in that scenario?

Rather have another top 9 forward with grit. Another Lemmy type would be nice.

Andersson and Boo Nieves to Red Wings for Givani Smith and Evgeny Svechnikov?

I don't think Nieves has value. He's a waiver-wire level of guy at this point. I do like Smith, but I'm not sure if he's good enough to be an NHL regular. Svechnikov is an RFA after the year and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he left.

I'd like to get Smith, but I wouldn't give up on Andersson for him. And I'm not sure I'm interested in Svechnikov.

What does this even mean? Are we now moving the goalposts from shooting percentage to sustainability? He's a former 5th OA pick who seems to have found his groove here. He's done nothing but produce since he's been here and he's an RFA without much leverage.

Both Strome and Panarin are on pace for career-best seasons playing with each other. Obviously Strome the main beneficiary here, but it's clear that there is great chemistry between both players. Strome is skilled, we know that from his draft pedigree and expectations early in his career, and he's only 26. Panarin is with us for the foreseeable future. So why not sign Strome and keep them both together for a few years? There are worse things than having a young center who puts up big but inflated stats playing with a superstar linemate who likes being on a line with him. Don't mess with a good thing.

In other words, different ages aside, learn from the mistake we made with Nylander.

One thing that confuses me with Strome is that if he had so much success riding shotgun with an elite guy like Tavares, why wouldn’t Edmonton have played him with McDavid more?

According to NaturalStatTrick they only had 58 minutes of ice time together in the season and a half he was there

He clearly can hang with these top level players

I think it does have to do with what someone was saying recently... he can hang with the top level players, so long as those top level players strength is slowing the play down. McDavid isn't that kind of player. Tavares is. Panarin is.

Cool thing is after Stromes years in EDM I think he may appreciate how perfect this situation for him is. I could see him taking a seriously friendly contract. And if he won’t than I believe he has value this deadline.

Moving the goal posts? I was for argument's sake willing to leave the whole shooting percentage aspect aside and take the 0.5 PPG production at face value.

My point is that a long-term extension carries a high risk as his ability to provide the value that his contract is going to expect of him is likely tied to playing with Panarin, and someone like Chytil might take that position from him in a year or two.

I also don't want to lose someone like DeAngelo to cap concerns.

Do you consider 3 years long term? Because I have a hard time seeing him get longer than that.

I'm not advocating signing him long term but every long term contract comes with risk, that's the nature of the business. It just seems like people here love discounting what he's done whether that be because he's played with Panarin, his shooting percentage, his sustainability, whatever. And he's also an RFA, do you have any idea what his next deal will be? Maybe he signs a deal that takes him to UFA. And if they move Deangelo it won't be because of Strome, it'll be because they of guys like Fox and Lindqvist.
