Oh him hahaha. He's past the point of being a prospect to me totally forgot about him. He's a 1/10 version of Michael Ryder.
It's still an issue

It's not a good look but I think in Gropp's case, he knows it's over.
It's crazy that while the summer of 2021 is going to be "The Great Cap Relief" for the Ranges, next summer in terms of the 50 contract slot they can really start cutting some dead weight: Gropp, Crawley, Belesky, Leedhal, Fontaine, Nieves, and Lettieri all probably will not be back. They can start taking shots on other NCAA FAs and European projects with new scouting.
Hey you can't win the lottery if you can't buy the ticket. The more dead weight we can cut, the more chances we have to play the game. And those 'shots' will be more successful? All 32 organizations are looking for a needle in a haystack. All 32 organizations have 'dead weight' - the aforementioned players are NHL irrelevant, just as 95% of the ones to come will be.

That said, we're only at 46/50 and may have less after the deadline, so there's nothing really stopping us from buying those tickets now.
Yeah but the other guy wasn't talking about draft picks, he was talking about the UDFAs. We've done very well with the UDFA players (and the college grads who become FAs). Georgiev, Pionk, Hayes, Vesey, Zuccarello, Lettieri, Talbot, etc.To an extent, but the infatuation and detail about some of these minor leaguers is too much for me. Granted, some of you guys ARE minor league focused, and that's fine - but the fact is the success rate is so minuscule for any of them to reach - let alone sustain an NHL level...No different from minor league baseball, you have player littered for spots because the spots need to be filled. They don't have any MLB future. Minor leagues exist to serve a need - and for one reason or other (ability, health, opportunity, timing, development, politics, etc etc) the vast majority of draft picks will be nothing more than minor leaguers. That's how it's always been and will always be.
Detroit is terrible and rebuilding, so I'm not sure why they'd want another year-plus of a guy that they were already willing to move on from. Unless the idea here is to use Andersson as a sweetener to take a bad contract. If so, I don't think I'm interested in just giving Andersson away at this point, and I actually think it's possible with money retained you can move Smith on his own. With the possibility of play offs likely gone, is it possible to trade Smith to Detroit with Andersson or something? Let ADA and Fox do more PK-ing? Rangers need the cap space that Smith leaves, if not now so for next year.
Good luck with that Strome haulA couple things I thought up Christmas evening...
Chris Kreider for Aliaksei Protas + conditional 2nd/1st.
Ryan Strome for John Farinacci + Jan Jenik
Andersson for Tolvanen (Already discussed)
None of us are in the NYR or Hartford locker rooms. A lot happens that is not reported on.
I think putting Kravtsov in the same boat as Lias is not being fair to Kravtsov.
One thought he would be better off developing in Russia, the other is and has been a temperamental child.
They are not even remotely the same or close to the same situations.

I really think Skjei should be told every 30 seconds, “stay out of the offense!” He, to me, is best when he stays back and dominates his side of the red line. He should only carry the puck when there’s no other choice or there’s a completely clear lane to the net.Hajek has a long way to go, as has Lindgren. Currently Rykov looks the best bet of our NHL/AHL defencemen and has a lot to do with not having played in the NHL yet so his performance is purely hypothetical.
I do agree that Skjei is better suited to an offensive role next to one of ADA/Fox though.
In addition, I think it's important that we try Fox in the primary shutdown role for a somewhat significant stretch before the season is over to suss out who between him and Trouba is better suited to the role before Trouba's trade clauses kick in.
Putting Gropp in the same conversation as Kravtsov and Andersson is silly. A former 2nd rounder, 23 year old questioning his future by not even being good enough for the AHL is very different than 2 recent top 10 picks picking up and leaving.
You’re right. It took Lias 66 NHL games and 74 games in Hartford before leaving.
Kravtsov left after 5 games...
And Kravtsov isn't looking to be traded, he was looking at what he though would have been a better development path.
Yet the same organization had it happen to them. It's not an either or, it's watching your first and 2nd rounders not pan out.
It's not too late for VK at all. I think he's got an NHL career ahead of him if he puts the work in.
But the other two are lost causes.
That’s not true. He was pissed at his coach for benching him and left after 5 games.
Let’s not paint him out to be some saint since he came back here after Gorton stepped in after his demotion in the KHL.
Lias at least put in about 140 games between the NHL/AHL before making his decision.
