I'm not sure that's 100%. Also, those conditions may be on him signing in ARI

I'd be shocked if the condition was him signing. If the condition is anything beyond making the playoffs, it's comically disastrous for NJ.

There's gotta be something up with Nick Merkley to never get a callup in Arizona. The other two are fine. Probably about on par with Howden/Hajek.

At face value, this deal seems pretty underwhelming for the Devils, and I'm pretty amazed they didn't allow teams to discuss an extension with Hall to try to boost the return. They better hope they can nab someone good with the ARI 2020 1st because that'll essentially be the key piece in this deal.

Edit: I'm really just not a fan of any of the prospects they got in this deal, and I'm surprised Hall couldn't get a more high-profile player. I'd be curious to see what the other teams in on Hall were willing to offer.

Obviously time will tell, but we very likely got a better return from the Nash trade than the Hall trade. From the Nash trade we’re left with Strome, Lindgren, and K’Andre Miller for Nash and a mid 2nd

As an AZ fan
Lindgren>>>Bahl (who’s overrated only bc our GM likes him, we suck at drafting so it doesn’t mean much)
Strome>>>>>>Merkley
Miller>Mid 2020 first

You could look at it that way.

Or you could look at the Nash trade as Nash @ 50% for a 1st, 7th, Lindgren, and 2 cap dumps. That we turned Spooner into a good player and packaged the 1st with another pick to move up 4 slots doesn't change that trade. Not that I'm complaining about it... I thought it was a good trade at the time as I didn't care much about either cap dump... Nash for a 1st plus a B prospect was good enough for me.

I also like how you put Miller over a mid-1st, even though that mid-1st could easily be just as good of a prospect.

@Edge - regarding the teams who may now turn to CK (Colorado, STL, Florida), do you have any sense on their urgency to get a deal done sooner than later? Does JG have a preference?

Thanks as always.

I think the Devils did fairly well.

Bahl is a very underrated prospect with legitimate NHL upside. In terms of our system, think somewhere between Lindgren and Miller (closer to the former than the latter)

Merkley and Schnarr project as bottom 6 NHL forwards. Let’s say one of them sticks. You get a 1st and potentially with some luck a 2nd or another first. That’s a decent haul for a player you aren’t going to be able to keep long-term. It’s not the sexiest return but it isn’t a bucket of crap and picks.
