Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

The Rangers do have the option, but I can't see them having the foresight to voluntarily give it up this year regardless of where they land.

They're gonna have whatever guy they think is Messier already lined up. And it's probably some dude we've never heard of who isn't scoring that much in whatever league he's in.

Knowing the way this org thinks, they'll draft a "two way role player with leadership attributes", a defensive defenseman, or a goalie.

This franchise is allergic to drafting and developing scoring talent which is why they constantly have to bring in expensive free agent forwards or trades to provide it.

They ALWAYS draft the lower ceiling B graded player who's peak is 2nd line over the flashy, talented skill guy - and when they're forced to take the skill guy, they stifle him, mire him in checking/grinding/the AHL, all while half the fanbase bleats and drones on about grit, and fellates the 45% Corsi of "heart and soul" players who block shots, throw hits, get into scrums after whistles, and otherwise move the puck out of their own end with the grace and dexterity of a spastic shotputter lobbing grenades.

The only reason offensive defensemen develop in this org is because even on the third pair, in the era of 12 forwards and 6D, you can't bury a D for <10 minutes a game, and the law of averages means that even a third pair D prospect will end up on the ice with the top line sooner or later.

At this point, our top 6 should be Panarin-Miller-Laf and Cuylle-Trocheck-Othmann, and I'll die on the hill. Everyone else can get bent in the bottom 6 for alI care, and everyone of those 6 should be on one of the PP units.

because we basically traded an unprotected pick for him in 2026. That was a big risk to take and its very possible we are gonna lose BIG on that gamble.
If the Rangers don’t fall below 13 this season - how’s this an issue?

That’s besides the likelihood that this season is more of an aberration while still at least staying close in the race, than them falling below 13 now and then being just as bad or even worse next season.

For everyone so concerned about this years pick being top-13 and therefore Drury going up the 2026 unprotected pick:

Just because it is protected DOES NOT mean Drury need to push it a year. From everything we are hearing, teams think this draft after 13 is not great but that doesn’t mean all teams agree. There’s nothing to say that by the time the draft rolls around, Drury looks at the team he has assembled, along with his anticipated moves in UFA and says, yeah, Pitt, you take that #12 pick because the guys I had hopes for are gone and I’ll keep my 2026 pick.

The Rangers have the option of pushing the pick but it’s not necessary if it’s top-13. If Drury trades Panarin and Kreider but doesn’t see a path towards icing a better product for next year just give up the 2025 pick and roll in to next year with a full gambit of picks.
I hope the Rangers go 0-12.

Panarin played for Torts in Columbus for a couple of years as their top player when they won their only playoff series ever, sweeping the 1 seed Lightning. Tortorella still uses Panarin as an example to complement his players from time to time, saying Konecny is a good player when tired saying Bread was the best at taht he ever coached or Foerster’s hands, etc.

This narrative that Panarin would crumble under some hard coaching or not be willing to adjust is absurd. He thrived under a guy who is considered a tough sob and even an anachronism or dinosaur.

Maybe Laviollette just sucks or it’s his system. I don’t know as I am not in the locker room. Panarin is on what, an 12 game point streak and scoring goals while we are fighting for our playoff lives. He can be better, of course, which would be reasonable criticism.

But I do know Panarin isn’t responsible for dudes not on his line playing badly, he’s not primarily responsible for this disaster of a season and he’s not at fault for starting the Chicago fire, the 1815 Mt. Tambora eruption, or the 1970 Huascaran avalanche.
Someone doesn't like the coach. This issues always pops up. The personnel on the team has changed and the issue is still here. Laviolette is the third head coach since 2021. How many players have been here for all three coaches? Panarin. Kreider. Zibanejad. Fox. Igor. Lafreniere. They didn't like Quinn. Too tough. Gallant. Too hands off. Can't wait to hear the excuses about Laviolette.

Would Panarin consider waiving for Chicago? He loved playing there. He likes big cities. The Hawks want to add talent around Bedard. If Marner stays in Toronto or signs with another team, would Panarin become an option for them if the Hawks are willing to extend Panarin as part of the trade? Panarin waives his NMC in return for a new contract extension on July 1. The Hawks have tons of young players and picks. Kyle Davidson needs to do something in Chicago. Panarin becomes a new running mate for Bedard. Panarin has another 2 or maybe 3 good years left in the tank. A 3 year extension at $11M or $12M. The Rangers clear out the $11,642,857 and use the Chicago assets to add other players.

setting aside there is room to debate top 6 [not sayin I have a prob w/those 2 lines, just sayin discussion/examination/focus = usually a good thing],that said
the post that above post quotes is so good, I would take sloppy seconds [excluding oral]!

somewhere on HF it was suggested Bedard is so fast he has to slow down for linemates to catch up = unproductive.
Breard and Berard would be most welcome to that prob

what does Panarin want?
If shot at cup, to DAL max retained for Berard + pls
then he can see what the market bears
BUT
if he wants max money 3-4 yr deal now, CHI is, I agree, a destination that makes sense.

But what can they offer?

As if that would change something. The mandate from King Dolan would still be to make the playoffs. There will never be a tear down to the studs rebuild in NY until this changes.
I'm hoping we get some more lottery luck. It's sad that it has come to that, especially given how our previous lottery wins have turned out, but maybe the third time's the charm. Drafting Schaefer would help us upgrade the left side of our defense. I'd feel more confident with this team taking a defenseman than a forward, given our track record.

Pittsburgh still wants to win. Maybe we trade Panarin to them, get our pick back, Kevin Hayes and a prospect, and tank our way to another lottery win. Then Dolan can blow his load on UFAs, whom the coach will play ahead of the young guys in an effort to win now, and we'll be back here again in 2030.

The issue is, they just haven’t had enough draft picks in general…

I could see Kreider to Chicago and Panarin to LA. I doubt Chicago will be on Kreider’s list.

Dallas has no cap space to even acquire Panarin @ 50% retained - which Dolan would hate to do given the $ amount.

How could it be worse? We went from eastern conference finals to being beat out of a playoff spot by Jeff Gortons Montreal rebuild that started after he left here. Drury isn't the guy, I'd take nearly anyone over him. Here's a thought, maybe Craig Button wants another opportunity, his current job has him following current and future draft picks, he'd certainly have a wealth of information with regards to the draft. Just one idea, might be terrible but it will never be this bad.

Craig Button year after year after year has some of the worst takes on the NHL entry draft. It's almost kind of a running joke. He'll speak authoratatively about it all the time but there's always guys who are egregiously high or low in his rankings and basically he's almost always out of sync on some players with just about everyone else.......and if he was right at least more of the time than not it would be one thing but it's usually goes the other way.

Their last first round forward pick is literally the flashy talented skilled forward. relax

Quinn was just a bad coach everyone could agree with. The big guys liked Gallant, but during the exit interviews everyone apparently noted that he didn’t provide any type of instruction during the N.J. series, and when the Devils adjusted, the Rangers didn’t. Plus I imagine the young guys complained about their usage. Lav’s problem is his D scheme and the fact he changes line combinations 50 times a game. Offense is easier to produce points if there is a familiarization with the people you are playing with.

Well that is my worry. The way they have been playing all year and where they stand now. It is very possible they fall below 13. And obviouly is that crappy 11-13 range not close to top 5/6.

Look no one knows what will happen next year but will I be shocked if we are worse and other teams get better? Nope. That is a gamble I did not wanna take giving up an unprotected first rounder in what is supposed to be a very good draft year. Not even gonna mention Millers age because he isn't getting any younger.

It’s just puzzling what has happened this season. Look at this goal from last year and our 3 forwards are hitting the blue line skating in together vs one guy and two forwards at a dead stop on the blue line like this year. Trocheck and Bread flying in with speed…I don’t think we’ve seen that at all and only the coaches and players can explain it. We are capable of playing this way and we don’t and I don’t think you can lay it all at Panarin’s feet.

That’s the crux of the problem along with our shit defensive zone system and breakout.

Everything is slow and reactive. Always standing still/flat footed which then leads us to chasing the play.

It’s so uninspired

I expect a new coach next season which means we will probably find success.

I’ll take the lotto pick this season. Hopefully land Schaefer or Misa. Martone is intriguing as Tkachuk type.

so another winger?

Also Martone's WJC says "not tkachuk type"

that is b'c they listened to the win now crowd + went for stupid rentals, instead of bern and a few others

I could see Kreider to Chicago and Panarin to LA. I doubt Chicago will be on Kreider’s list.
I could see bread to LA, but while I am 99% keep and appreciate Scheider, Schneid + to LA for Byfield + is the exception and that is the deal there.

bread has to tell us if he wants to go where there is max money first, or if he will take a contender now and figure out contract $$ in a new deal after

As long as ck injury woes are real, I don't see any meaningful offer from anyone.

Agree as to it being extremely tight/difficult, but disagree it is not doable.
Presuming we do not throw like a 4th or 5th to ANA to eat 2-2.5ish for 1 season, in round terms Bisch = elc round it at 1. That leaves a 5m gap. But betw cap going up and creative making of space w/lesser assets on roster, it can be done.
Not smart for ongoing, as we have seen Leafs have probs due to being too top heavy. But for 1 season only, yes they can, imo

I push for us to standardize around developing quality youth, and let them get familiar.
Fam = increased comfort level = increased anticipation/reaction, and with further comfort then for real chemistry, and possibly synergy.

LaF played well on kid line
so did KK
once that stopped, .... probs

we don't have to be blind about experimenting, but that MUST be after things are properly set

I think there is a decent chance this could happen. I also wonder if Anaheim would be an option. I think they are starting to get impatient for some playoff games. The L.A area has a substantial Russian population. Also, if the Kings lose to the Oilers in the first round again, you would think the Kings might be willing to take a swing with Bread. He doesn’t fit their style, but obviously their style ain’t working.
