Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

The Rangers do have the option, but I can't see them having the foresight to voluntarily give it up this year regardless of where they land.

They're gonna have whatever guy they think is Messier already lined up. And it's probably some dude we've never heard of who isn't scoring that much in whatever league he's in.

Knowing the way this org thinks, they'll draft a "two way role player with leadership attributes", a defensive defenseman, or a goalie.

This franchise is allergic to drafting and developing scoring talent which is why they constantly have to bring in expensive free agent forwards or trades to provide it.

They ALWAYS draft the lower ceiling B graded player who's peak is 2nd line over the flashy, talented skill guy - and when they're forced to take the skill guy, they stifle him, mire him in checking/grinding/the AHL, all while half the fanbase bleats and drones on about grit, and fellates the 45% Corsi of "heart and soul" players who block shots, throw hits, get into scrums after whistles, and otherwise move the puck out of their own end with the grace and dexterity of a spastic shotputter lobbing grenades.

The only reason offensive defensemen develop in this org is because even on the third pair, in the era of 12 forwards and 6D, you can't bury a D for <10 minutes a game, and the law of averages means that even a third pair D prospect will end up on the ice with the top line sooner or later.

At this point, our top 6 should be Panarin-Miller-Laf and Cuylle-Trocheck-Othmann, and I'll die on the hill. Everyone else can get bent in the bottom 6 for alI care, and everyone of those 6 should be on one of the PP units.

because we basically traded an unprotected pick for him in 2026. That was a big risk to take and its very possible we are gonna lose BIG on that gamble.
If the Rangers don’t fall below 13 this season - how’s this an issue?

That’s besides the likelihood that this season is more of an aberration while still at least staying close in the race, than them falling below 13 now and then being just as bad or even worse next season.

For everyone so concerned about this years pick being top-13 and therefore Drury going up the 2026 unprotected pick:

Just because it is protected DOES NOT mean Drury need to push it a year. From everything we are hearing, teams think this draft after 13 is not great but that doesn’t mean all teams agree. There’s nothing to say that by the time the draft rolls around, Drury looks at the team he has assembled, along with his anticipated moves in UFA and says, yeah, Pitt, you take that #12 pick because the guys I had hopes for are gone and I’ll keep my 2026 pick.

The Rangers have the option of pushing the pick but it’s not necessary if it’s top-13. If Drury trades Panarin and Kreider but doesn’t see a path towards icing a better product for next year just give up the 2025 pick and roll in to next year with a full gambit of picks.
I hope the Rangers go 0-12.

Panarin played for Torts in Columbus for a couple of years as their top player when they won their only playoff series ever, sweeping the 1 seed Lightning. Tortorella still uses Panarin as an example to complement his players from time to time, saying Konecny is a good player when tired saying Bread was the best at taht he ever coached or Foerster’s hands, etc.

This narrative that Panarin would crumble under some hard coaching or not be willing to adjust is absurd. He thrived under a guy who is considered a tough sob and even an anachronism or dinosaur.

Maybe Laviollette just sucks or it’s his system. I don’t know as I am not in the locker room. Panarin is on what, an 12 game point streak and scoring goals while we are fighting for our playoff lives. He can be better, of course, which would be reasonable criticism.

But I do know Panarin isn’t responsible for dudes not on his line playing badly, he’s not primarily responsible for this disaster of a season and he’s not at fault for starting the Chicago fire, the 1815 Mt. Tambora eruption, or the 1970 Huascaran avalanche.
Someone doesn't like the coach. This issues always pops up. The personnel on the team has changed and the issue is still here. Laviolette is the third head coach since 2021. How many players have been here for all three coaches? Panarin. Kreider. Zibanejad. Fox. Igor. Lafreniere. They didn't like Quinn. Too tough. Gallant. Too hands off. Can't wait to hear the excuses about Laviolette.

Would Panarin consider waiving for Chicago? He loved playing there. He likes big cities. The Hawks want to add talent around Bedard. If Marner stays in Toronto or signs with another team, would Panarin become an option for them if the Hawks are willing to extend Panarin as part of the trade? Panarin waives his NMC in return for a new contract extension on July 1. The Hawks have tons of young players and picks. Kyle Davidson needs to do something in Chicago. Panarin becomes a new running mate for Bedard. Panarin has another 2 or maybe 3 good years left in the tank. A 3 year extension at $11M or $12M. The Rangers clear out the $11,642,857 and use the Chicago assets to add other players.

setting aside there is room to debate top 6 [not sayin I have a prob w/those 2 lines, just sayin discussion/examination/focus = usually a good thing],that said
the post that above post quotes is so good, I would take sloppy seconds [excluding oral]!

somewhere on HF it was suggested Bedard is so fast he has to slow down for linemates to catch up = unproductive.
Breard and Berard would be most welcome to that prob

what does Panarin want?
If shot at cup, to DAL max retained for Berard + pls
then he can see what the market bears
BUT
if he wants max money 3-4 yr deal now, CHI is, I agree, a destination that makes sense.

But what can they offer?
