Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

Remember when Kreider, Hagelin, and Grabner were the fastest skaters in the league? Now two are retired and Kreider is a front net specialist who moves like an oil tanker. Meanwhile the average player can skate like them in their primes. Time goes on and the game evolves.
Kreider is probably top 3 in terms of speed on the Rangers. What does that say about the rest of the team?

That we should strongly consider signing Matt Duchene if he hits the market this summer if we can convince him that it'll be trocheck getting the third line minutes. North south puck lugger, like Chytil.

With the cap going up and more and more potential free agents coming off the board it could spark a lot of bidding wars when July's free agency opens up. If that's the case a lot of teams will overspend on free agents....sometimes it's better to work out deals instead of long term contracts.

I get both sides of trading/keeping Kreider. But my issue is what if this the best its going to get? He clearly has chronic back issues/pain. What if an offseason does nothing to improve his play. If he ends up on the LTIR for most of next season, what value does he have then? I feel like this might be peak value right now.
Thats why i think Drury would rather do this sooner rather than later.

You also increase his value with retention combined with 3 postseason runs.

He looked pretty good during the 4 nations. Theres 20 games or so until playoffs. Someone may take a shot at him

I think teams like Dallas, LA, Minny & Vegas would all be interested. I'm sure there are other teams in the East as well but Drury will not trade to unless its a lopsided deal. I've always felt Kreider would be good a good fit in Dallas. Teams like Winnipeg may be on his list of 15

If Kreider or Panarin are moved and Laf returns to the left side, Duchene is also very good on the wing. Definitely no harm in having Miller/Trochek/Zib/Duchene who can all win a draw and move to center if there are injuries of things need a shakeup (Zib right at 50% career face off % is the lowest of the four - not a bad luxury). It would be a fairly old group, but if Kreider is gone and Duchene is added, it’s the same average age as if Kreider stayed, and Duchene has insane wheels at 34 and is over a point per game. Of course, his fit in Dallas has been ideal and he loves the whole country music scene, so getting him to NYR at this stage of his career may be difficult. I have a feeling Dallas will try to move Seguin to keep Duchene who will give them friendly terms for a final contract.

I wonder if teams are asking Drury to retain salary as insurance against the back issues.

CK had the goal vs Sweden but didn't look physically up to playing against Canada.

Lets goooo, get him the F outta here!

Lots of different ways to evaluate skating but Kreider has always been amazing at top speed and acceleration but terrible at edge work. In other words, he'd be a terrible figure skater but great at pulling a sled team.

I think playing under AV's system showcased his skting more as well. Grabner would not have scored 20+ under other coaches. Those guys had so much free reign to poach.

Does McDavid suck because he hasn’t won a cup? It takes an entire team to win and a guy like Tkachuk is exactly what you want for playoff hockey. He’s the type of guy that can set the tone, the exact opposite of playoff Panarin.
There is a gargantuan gap of logic you are making. Not making the playoffs at all vs winning a Cup. No, McDavid doesn’t suck because he hasn’t won a Cup, but he routinely makes the playoffs and has been a whisker away from winning it. Until Tkachuk actually tastes a playoff game let alone a conference final you all can miss me with Tkachuk being a better player than Bread.

I don’t think BT sucks anyway. I just don’t understand the lust for him based on…what exactly. Zero post-season appearances. 6, probably 7 years missing the playoffs.

I'm going to be sad when Kreider's gone. I'll get over it. He'll be my last favorite Ranger. That way I can just join in with all you and shit on every player to put on that crest.

It takes a really special player to start and end their careers with the same organization and never put on another team's sweater. Crosby will probably do it. Malkin. Kopitar probably.

Despite any arguments to the contrary (and unfounded theories about him in the room) Chris has meant a lot to this organization. I hope to be there when they raise his number to the ceiling.

If Drury does send Kreider packing, its likely for futures and/or a prospect, considering the team trading for him will want to add to their forward group depth and not subtract.

I wonder if Drury thinks a kid like Trevor Connelly from Vegas could be reeled with the help of JT Miller, but there is a ton of baggage their and not sure the fit in NY is smart. Or if TB goes for it and is fine moving Isaac Howard? Bischel from Dallas is an interesting idea, with his size and compete but his puck play is the issue.

The fact he was “unengaged” for 1.5 calendar years doesn’t strike you as a problem?
Mika, like Kreider, seems to require constant, intense external motivation. I'm glad Mika has finally started to wake up again, but I'm cautiously optimistic during this ~2 month explosion of effort/results.

Like you said, that ~1.5 years of disengaged play as well as the collective collapse of the team under NYR's leadership core to start this season speaks louder to me right now.
