Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

I think Loki had a point in that we all can probably tone it down at times, myself included. The other night a poster thought I was arguing with him and I had no clue I was coming off that way. Sometimes its tough because you can't hear tone of voice online. We should be cool with each other as NYR fans. Save the bashing for Flyers and Devils fans ☺️

People just need to stop being so smug and dismissive to other posters on this board - it’s become insufferable and obnoxious. Again, why are posters treating you (of virtually all people) like some scrub poster with invalid opinions? When did we stop having energy to engage in any kind of intelligent discourse and just start posting single sentence “I know so much better than you” crap?

People really don’t like that I’m calling it out and mimicking it lately. If you’re hating my posts recently, there’s a good chance you should look in the mirror. If you think I’m being a smug know it all, there’s a good chance I’m aping your own behavior. Because that’s how 50% of the board behaves these days. No one engages in any type of thoughtful discourse. We all just post snarky, quippy one liners dismissing other people’s opinions and back-patting ourselves as superior hockey intellects because we can look up a players chart and say “see!”. It sucks. It wasn’t always that way. Everyone’s stopped engaging in any kind honest discourse and just resorted to shitting on whatever they don’t agree with.

Like I said, if you’re sitting at home thinking “God Loki is an obnoxious know it all” you’re damn right it’s annoying. So stop doing it. At least I will write a few paragraphs and try to have an actual discussion about something. Most of you can only muster things like:

“LOL Calling Byram a good D is a stretch”

“lmao, thank god someone else traded for Frederic so I don’t have to hear about him anymore”

“Here’s a chart, your thoughts are invalid”

Anyone who wants to entertain a conversation about anything that isn’t agreed on by the majority is a pariah and the hive mind is the source for the strength of convictions, regardless of the quality of opinion offered. Increasingly few bother to respond to the actual thoughts, or articulate an actual counter argument. It’s simply scoffed at as “we, the superior, deem your minority opinion inferior” and whether it had merit or not is rarely given the opportunity to matter, because it’s been smugly sneered at by this inexplicably growing preference for avoiding any meaningful discussion in favor of short, quippy, snappy responses.

I’m not saying I am different, but as so many of you find my posting to be unbearable and feel very comfortable disagreeing with me on virtually anything (and I guarantee I’ve been playing and spent more time on the ice in my life than 50% of the board combined, which is not that wild of a statement considering plenty of you have never even laced them up) I’m here to assure you that none of you SHOULD be as convicted in your opinions as you are. Would you all prefer an echo chamber that only affirms your thoughts and opinions and enhances your false beliefs that you’re hockey experts (who have maybe played, what, 6th grade roller hockey?) or would you like to stop shitting on peoples opinions and engaging in actual honest discussion again instead of being a bunch of smug butt holes? It’s lazy, it’s disrespectful (not talking about toward me) and it’s drastically decreased the quality of our boards recently.

I think it's just...hard to tell. It seemed to favor the guys who could really skate and play up tempo, but NHL hockey isn't always like that, and Jack Hughes, one of the best skaters and creators in the NHL, struggled.

On one hand, yeah Miller and Zibanejad and Kreider are not on the level of McDavid and even Matt Tkachuk, but NHL hockey over a long season and long playoffs is often not necessarily about having the best player available, but the whole team playing up to their level at the right time

that also said, this group needs something more for sure as well. So like...eh, 4 games in a random tournament isn't enough for me to make a lot of hay about, but the team obviously isn't top caliber here either this year
Brady Tkachuk has 6 seasons under his belt with zero playoff appearances. Yet because of a 4 team mid season tournament I am supposed to believe he is a guaranteed cup winner and top 15 player. Looking like Ottawa won’t make it this year either. Yet some of our fans are looking at him like the guy waking down the street with lustful eyes meme.

I don't know how to do the math, but it seems more likely Smith isn't traded yet for the benefit of whatever team he's going to saving some cap space. Rather than a "big" trade. Odds are it's not a complicated trade.

I'm sure Drury would like to trade Kreider. But his health is questionable, he's about to turn 34, he's making 6.5 million through 26-27. Odds are there isn't a deal worth making before the deadline. And if Drury retained any substantial amount of salary on Kreider for next season and the year after, that's a waste.

so Oilers are desperate to win and thats going to make McDavid test free agency?
Yes over paying for players in hopes you go far so your superstar doesn't go to free agency is exactly it. Oilers always lack a goalie and grit. A first round exit could sway Mcd to leave.

I can't say jt enough with Frédéric. Go read the Bruins board they killed him all year.

It's no my vision, it's the league's. Don't come at me about "my vision" when numerous teams were trying to trade for him and he landed a great return. That's not bc of my vision, he's highly regarded around the league.

As for the double retention, team can't just trade for a guy to toss him on ltir without being compliant. The oilers are potentially going to pull the LTIR game until playoffs game 1 with TWO players this year with Kane and fredric, no one (team or league) wants the optics to be that the oiler "knew" he would be out the season before they even got him, not with the Kane situation lingering the way it has. Wayyyy too structured...
You should go read the Bruins board. They killed Frédéric all year. I guess the league viewed Lindgren as more than he actually is or maybe its 1 GM over paying.

Sorry I am not seeing your LTIR strategy with Frédéric. Doesnt make any sense to me.

Regarding the (vocal?) majority on these boards, you're spot on. It's a drag sometimes and I don't remember it being this way, but I've been away for a long time (since about 08-09 I'd guess, this version of the forum doesn't seem to go back that far) so I honestly didn't know. Hyperbole and misplaced certainty are very common, and most irritating to me. But, that's them. And it is what they want. You don't, I don't, but they do... so that's what it'll be (some times anyway).

Any chance the Rangers flip one of the picks they received from the Avs for someone with term, Connor Garland for example

I strongly believe the Rangers should trade Adam Fox before his NMC kicks in. It's always better to trade a player one year too early than one year too late. The reaction is strange. Does Fox send everyone a check every month? Are they related to Fox? Vendetta against Fox. One person here hinted I don't like Fox because of his ethnicity or political affiliation. Really? The mods on this board didn't do jack shit about that comment.

None of that. His game is falling apart. He has been bad for the Rangers. Those fancy stats say the opposite. He was brutal in the 4 nations. His spot for the Olympics is far from a guaranteed thing. Florida acquired Seth Jones and you can see the Panthers rehabbing his game. Jones becomes a candidate for the right side especially if Bill Zito is part of the management team. The Panthers will get Jones back on track. McAvoy. Faber. Slavin. A healthy Hughes. Werenski. Sanderson. Hanifin. Maybe even Luke Hughes will merit consideration next year. Fox is a top 3-5 top in the entire league but he didn't play in the top 5 of the 4 nations teams and his spot next year is tenuous. Hughes didn't play and Fox barely saw time on the PP. Don't mention it because you have some personal vendetta against Fox.

I'm torn:

If we miss the playoffs:

Drury has an increased chance of being fired

If we make the playoffs (I legit don't think we have a chance to make a run, but who knows?):

We give up our first rounder this year instead of an unprotected one next year. MUCH preferable to me.

Just wanna say I completely agree with this post in particular a billion times over. These charts and fancy stats have ruined online discourse. Now you can just post a chart a be right, no argument required! No nuance, no individual ideas, just “here chart you wrong”

If Kreider goes, i bet he'll be dealt to the Kings. Big body, scores in the playoffs. Kings need secondary scoring and playoff experience
Plus he can jump in and out of the ocean if he can't find a pool . Geesh....think about what he could have been if he had not done the stupid move on Price .....not the smartest tool in the toolbox but he could tip pucks . That's a wrap !

It's time. As much as I hate to say it, he's probably a huge part of the culture problem.

Mika has got to go. His window with this team is dead, and he will only decline faster every year.

I'm all for a rebuild at this point! President's trophy to out of playoff contention is too much for one off-season. The core is rotten, and it must be replaced!

Rangers are currently in a playoff spot FYI

RB woke up thinking about Fox again. Must be a day that end in Y :sarcasm:

This team has to move Kreider imo. Im sure other teams want him and see him improving when he gets out of a "bad" situation with the Rangers. Would obviously love to move him to the Sabres for some youth (McLeod) or to the Bruins (Geekie?). Thinking of RFAs or otherwise unsigned players those teams might have issues extending.

Why does Kreider have to be a summer deal

Frederic is week to week and was dealt

Why would a team that wants Kreider for 2 more yrs not want him for this yrs run ?
B'C HE'S INJURED
stop ignoring this fact
admit to reality
few will pay anything, no one will pay top $
GIVE IT UP
STOP

What could a deal look like to pry Ferraro or Walman out of SJ while retaining on Vanecek.

Jones/Othmann/Retain 1.7 mil?
stop dealing youth for vets

I think people here are greatly undervaluing Chris Kreider and how much he could return. potential 50% retention on top of it. Almost all playoff teams would have interest.
no, for reason above
peeps giving ck the bum's rush need to stop

Any chance the Rangers flip one of the picks they received from the Avs for someone with term, Connor Garland for example
no, again stop dealing futures for vets

2 days until the deadline. Lets f***ing goooooo

Tonight isnt a must win, but they better win. Drury is clearly going to buy if he can get a team to deal non-rentals. i think Othmann, Jones and some of these picks they've accumulated will be used as chips. Kreider, too.

You can continue this if you insist but it would be helpful to see what you think a fair return for Fox would be so that people can reasonably respond.

Remember when Kreider, Hagelin, and Grabner were the fastest skaters in the league? Now two are retired and Kreider is a front net specialist who moves like an oil tanker. Meanwhile the average player can skate like them in their primes. Time goes on and the game evolves.

I think we all can see now that the issue with Mika was never physical but instead a motivation issue. Mika since the x-mas break is more engaged now than he was during the whole 23-24 regular season.
I'm not sure what the answer is for Mika's place on this team long term. I have been as hard as anyone on Mika who was vomit inducing to watch for much of this season and last season, as you point out. He's been just a different player in 2025. It is really bizarre. Maybe he had a realization that he really wants to be here? His attitude and his interviews even have improved so much. He's finishing his checks?!?! He just looks dialed in and his body language is on point. I genuinely like the guy, but it absolutely kills this team when he plays like he doesnt care. Can we trust him to continue to stay motivated? I also think Kreider being traded would help Mika immensely. Let him build the relationship with JTM and some other competitive guys. I'm fine with keeping him long term if he can maintain this attitude and be a 200 foot 30-30 winger for this team.

Can JT have a similar effect on Kreider? We havent seen Kreider play with much competitive fire since the Carolina series last year. Not sure it will matter as there's a decent chance Chris has played his last game as a Ranger. It's the most fascinating storyline around the team right now imo. Feels like they need a conclusion. If Drury waits to the summer, you have the sword hanging over the guys head at a critical moment in the season.
