Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVI (Playoffs or Retool?)

Schneider has shown so many glimpses where he snaps the puck up ice with a great pass and springs the offense, but he can't do it consistently yet. It makes me think he can be a good all-around dman and not just a defensive dman. It would be a mistake to move him this early unless the return is a great long-term piece, and I don't mean JT Miller.

I felt that way in the playoffs last year. Schneider was one of the better D against Florida and he was showing some offensive ability, especially on the breakout. The fact he could actually skate is probably a decent part of that.

He could be a solid 2-way guy given the opportunity and time to develop that skillset. You'd see an uptick in his offense playing with Fox, but I think it's how he adjusts to his off-side and if he gets the opportunity to take those chances.

I saw someone above mentioning Power...but that's a hell of a contract, and, for his size, he's not a physical player. I don't think the cost to acquire him (and the cost in the cap) is worth it. If Dahlin wasn't there and he got more PP time, Power's numbers would look flashier. He's a good offensive guy and can move the puck, but he doesn't have enough of a two-way game.

I’ve come around on Miller the player/contract. He fits the need and I actually like how the defense is coming together with Fox, Miller, Schneider and Borgen. There’s a spot there to help improve that group but it’s in much better condition with Borgen and even an inexpensive 6/7 in Vaak.

If you were to tell me that Drury could acquire Miller for 50% of his normal cost and then find a way to offload Kreider, Zibanejad and Panarin between now and next season I’m in. I realize that’s a heavy lift but I think it’s possible.

I think 3/4 of that is realistic.

I'd even say 2/4 of it may be more likely than not.

Take some responsibility off Mika’s plate and shift him to RW? Trade for Frederic?

Panarin - Miller - TDL
Lafreniere - Trocheck - Smith
Cuylle - Frederic - Zibanejad
Edstrom - Carrick - Rempe/Kaliyev

Schneider - Fox
Miller - Borgen
Vaak - TDL

I said it the other day but whether people want Miller or not it would take a ton of pressure off Mika and make him the 3C since he’s basically a checking line center at this point anyway. Hell, I’d even put Kreider back with him too and they can play a checking role since they aren’t providing offense anyway.

Lol at people who think Kreider returns less than a 1st.

A one armed Kreider is returning a 1st plus. Reputation matters.
sorry to have to tell you, but
actual health >>> reputation
also
eye test shows when Kreider is healthy he is easily worth a 1st +
BUT
it also shows right now he is < 100% with no way to say definitively in x wks he is back to 100%
fully healthy Kreider >>> impaired Kreider
other teams can see this too

give up the kool aid and try drinking the stuff @RangerBoy and I enjoy

I am pretty despondent about where they are right now. Giving up anything of future value for JT Miller would be insane to me. The only scenario where it makes sense is if you can use Mika to acquire Miller; thereby some of the future value you are getting would be getting out from Mika's god awful contract. Or conversely, if you gave up a package centered around like, Sykora and other non-Perrault prospects and then you had confidence you could recoup those prospects by moving out Mika this summer.

Anyone who thinks this team needs to add Miller so it can have a chance in the playoffs by riding Igor is nuts. There is no way this team is winning four playoff rounds as it is currently constructed, and now the future is so depleted that I see nothing but wasted time and another rebuild on the horizon. This team has almost no long term building blocks at this point. Kakko was wasted and is gone. Chytil hasn't blossomed. Lafreniere is stuck as a 50 point winger. Every other piece is quickly aging or is already too aged.

We completely blew our chance at creating a long term window and we got two Conference Finals appearances out of it. I see no chance that acquiring Miller moves the needle when you look at the opposition, even just in our own conference. And you know Miller isn't gonna come here and be 105 point JT Miller, he will be some lesser version of his recent self just like all the aging vets we acquire.

What a disaster. Drury can't get out of here fast enough.

How to further improve the team? Get rid of this dead weight..........

it's not like they're being relegated on 3rd pairing and 4th line duties/limited minutes.... these guys are getting primo minutes.

Absolute vampires sucking the life out of this team.

fix it. Get rid of Lindgren already....
Jesus.

And we are locked into how many more years of this?

Trocheck is in decline. Click on the tweet. Drury should be pro-active here and not wait until the bottom falls out. Full NMC this season and 12 team NTC starting in July.

Zibanejad and Kreider are dog shit. They sucked together. Broke them and the suckiness has spread to Cuylle and Chytil. The Rangers finally broke them up and they aren't any better.

Panarin is also having a down year. Artemi is also turning 34 later this year.

This core group is not worth doubling down on by acquiring another 30 year plus player with a huge cap hit. The Rangers aren’t winning with this group this season. The situation will only get worse as these guys get older. The Rangers keep rolling these guys on the PP. It's the same BS.

Miller is also in decline.

Most of the team is in decline.

No one saw this coming, of course.

They need to give this roster the 2018 treatment. They'd get better returns, even, because the pieces they should be selling are higher regarded (Kreider, Mika, Trocheck, Panarin, Smith, Lindgren).

I wish we hadn't dumped Kakko.

But why?

What are we doing with JT Miller when we are short a competent top-6 center, and two competent top-6 wings?

I'm not saying that Kreider and Zibanejad are solutions, but dumping them and then acquiring another win-now piece gets you nowhere either.

This roster just has to be nuked. It's not good enough to win. It wasn't ever and now it is worse due to (foreseeable) decline.

People are just lying to themselves because they don't want another rebuild. This team isn't gonna move out Panarin, Kreider, and Zibanejad and then ride Shesterkin to a Cup.

It needs another overhaul and massive young talent infusion.
