If we can get a Byfield or Lafrienierre out of this draft we will be squarely on that road, but we'll obviously still not a lot more.

this years iteration of the Rangers is worse than I thought they’d be, but there have been positive steps forward in terms of player development, that needs to continue in addition to other things (high picks, smart trades, etc)

That was with a generational player (Kane), and former 3rd overall number 1 center (at the time) (Toews), a future Hall of Famer who won the Norris that year (Keith), and probably the second best coach of all time (Quenville). We don't have any of those things yet.

Kakko, Panarin, Fox?

Not for a 7th overall pick who has shown he will never be a top 6 center. Maybe he will be a functional NHL player someday, but as far as where he was taken in the draft he's a bust.

Still way too early. Same things were said about Schiefle after he struggled to make an impact.

"Should be a lottery team this year" and "a year or two away from a legitimate cup contender" is a really tough circle to square, yet somehow feels like a normal view around here.
I think that "legitimate Cup contender is a stretch". But a playoff contender is not. This year, the bottom out. Next year, the rise begins (how far depends on how much of steps forward some of the kids continue to make). Two years from now battling for playoffs.

I think you are underestimating how this season will play out. For me I think Kakko, Fox, Hajek, Buchnevich and Chytil will grow enough this year that this team will be able to roll out a competitive team. I understand everyone wants to keep stockpiling and I am all about the rebuild but at some point you have to turn the corner, I believe that's next year but I think a round of playoffs this year would be beneficial especially if we can grab a 1st for Kreider and add two more 1st rounders next year to our prospect pool. This team is going to need some experience to go with all the youth.

We are talking 2 and a half years from now....

Kakko could be the new Jagr, Fox could be the new Coffey and Panarin, well he can be Panarin.
Why stop there? Gerorgiev can be the new Hassek, Chytil will be the new Forsberg, Lindgren can be the new Foote, Kravstov the new Kovalev.

There is no chance of that happening. Fox should not be mentioned in the same breath as a generational player. Kakko is not one either.

Detroit has some pretty good prospects and young players, right? They are looking at the 4th consecutive year without the playoffs.

This has nothing to do with stockpiling. It has everything to do with being realistic. Otherwise, you have what you had this summer. People built some pie in the sky expectatations based on feel good vibes. Then, when reality knocked, it turns out that it was not expectations that were wrong but rather coaching and management.

There is also a world of difference between being competitive and being Cup contenders. Will they be competitive next year? I believe they will. Will they be playoff contenders, I believe that they can be, but much more things need to go right than one would think. Which does not mean that they will not be in the race for most or all of the year. Will they be serious Cup contenders? I believe that there is absolutely no shot of that.
