There's probably a reason why reporters haven't dug deeper and found this to be a concussion related issue.

And it's not because they're lazy or are afraid to ask...

Brooks can't be out of unnamed sources

I won’t lie it’s really hard not to be extremely concerned with the Zibanejad situation.

Is he doing off ice work? He appears to be a guy who really needs to work to be in good physical condition.

its for sure a concussion. its also for sure an organizational narrative to not discuss it.

imo, this is a classic case of a progression of severity and effect from a traumatic blow to the head.

concussions are cumulative. this is a scary real thing

this kids career is just taking off and now this.

lets remember eric lindros.
How can we possibly risk re signing him?
I don’t think we can.

The center depth on this team 3 years ago was great, and now it is bad. Zibanejad situation is much worse than the surface because now we have a reoccurring issue. Still have plenty of time to figure out the rest, but his next contract is going to be scary.

How do you figure? If he stays healthy, they finally have a 1C at the start of his peak. If he gets seriously hurt or has to retire, he doesn't count against the cap.

Zibanejad won't be at the start of his peak as a 29-year old. He was at the start of his peak last year.

The worry is that it turns into a Loui Eriksson, who is not LTIR-able and isn't going to retire. I don't totally agree with being overly cautious for that reason, but there's another possibility besides what you mentioned.

Based on what the Rangers have done the last few years, I think there's at least a distinct possibility that Zibanejad's next contract is with another team.

I think what they've been doing is with the rebuild in mind.

I don't think NYR will be as hesitant to re-sign 29-30 year olds to longer deals once they are back to making the postseason on a regular basis.

Gotta wonder who is going to play center on a team that's supposed to be improving if Mika's gone. Maybe if they draft a great one next year? Otherwise I don't know.

I get the feeling that there might be some hesitation to long-term deals for guys when they hit that mark. Zibanejad could be the first real test to see how they approach those situations.

But for a while now, there's been more of an inclination to move those guys at 29-31, not necessarily to lock them up.

Not unless this 29-30 year old comes with $11m per price tag for 6-8 years and significant concussion concerns. Staal and Nash happened on this management's watch.

All I'm saying is you better hope NYR win the draft lottery this year if we don't plan on extending Zibanejad.
