faceoffs don't matter until they do...the stats are skewed cause most faceoffs aren't important. but there are also faceoffs that are very important...the overall winning % isn't as important as the ability to bear down and win those key draws.

I don't think its controversial to say that faceoffs don't matter except extreme situations and special teams.

But from that we can draw that like 90% of faceoffs taken have no impact.

If you're gauging his worth on points alone, you're doing it wrong. You don't always see a players effectiveness watching the game on TV because the camera only follows the guy with the puck. There's a reason Chytil has been glued to him. There's a reason they tried him and Kakko together to start the year. He makes other guys on his line better even when he doesn't have the puck. I'm not saying I give him 7x7 but I do try and get him to sign a 5 year deal at 6, 6.5.
Kreider is a good player but disappears way too much. In a cap league you can’t pay a guy like him 7 mil. 4.5 yes not 7. That’s for impact players. Point per game players that are always involved.

well fans think he is not smart on the ice maybe because he talks to himself on the ice in his own head haha. i want him traded unless he takes the same salary as right now. his speed and size when he uses it is still needed on this team. in a trade I hope they find a similar young player that is big, aggressive and that can skate if they can find his replacement. I love what the Rangers are doing with Lemieux and putting him in front of the goalie on the PP

Yeah, I have to agree that the time to move on is now. If he suddenly decided he wanted to sign a 4 year, 5 million contract, sure. But he wont. And he shouldn't. It's sad though. He really is a special player...when he wants to be.

This disappearing thing is so overblown, and frankly lazy. He's a 25+ goals , 22+ assist guy. That's who he is. And he brings a ton of other intangibles to the team. People's expectations of him are just ridiculous, he's not a 40 goals scorer, he's never going to be a 40 goal scorer. Whatever a 50-55 point power winger gets is what he should get. I don't think that's 7 but there's always a loose cannon GM. Good for him if he gets that deal. But this team will be noticeably worse without him on the roster next year.

Lazy? Just stating what I’m watching.
For his size and talent I’m always feeling like he should be doing more. I like him. I root for him. But....

his speed and size needs to be replaced. the he draws the defense back to open up for his linemates is needed. his speed always negates icings. those are very important to offensive zone time.

I don’t think many have been looking at these things from an unbiased perspective. If you can make an argument that nothing matters but how good a player is, the more solid the argument for CF% becomes.

I would like to see an analysis that really considers these things:
1. FOs is to a large extent a coin flip.
2. Almost everyone are in the interval 45-55%.
3. There is a big difference between a clean win and a teammate barely managing to touch the puck first.
4. Scoring in hockey is in itself a tremendously slow percentage play.

A relevant question to see an answer to would IMO be if there is any relationship between the out come of a game and a team decisively winning/loosing in the circle.

Like most teams have one guy they can send out to take the important FOs. But it’s worse if all 4 guys are getting crushed.

To start, obviously face-offs is a less important statistic than various cf% stats in terms of being indicative or contributing to a win vs loss. That aside, I view face-off and CF% in a kind of like opposite relationship of single game impact vs. long-term forward looking indicator. Face-off team’s stat is important in a particular game when a team is probably chasing the puck if it’s combined 33%/66%, but then your individual rate is 40%-60% just means that every 10 tries you lose one more than you win, which should not be a big deal. On the other hand being outshot in one game very often does not translate to loss in that particular game but over a period of time will indicate if a team is one of the better ones or the opposite.

Who on this roster or in the system does what he does? I can't think of that guy.

He's a unique player in today's NHL. In saying that, with his combination of skill and size he should do more. Those two things are independent thoughts.

Losing him will hurt. I actually think his loss will hurt more than Zuccarello or Hayes. In saying that, they have Kaako, Lemieux, Kravtsov and perhaps Barron waiting to take on roles/larger roles. They signed Panarin and have Buch. The team dynamic will change.

Is Barron a center? I thought he has been predominately playing wing.

He and Kreider are not alike aside from size.

Also, Lemiuex is a bottom 6 player, do not expect him to become Kreider-esque in the future. I think people are way over hyping this guy

I just think when you put unrealistic expectations on a player, people end up disappointed or say he never lived up to the hype. From my perspective, he turned out better than they could have hoped for when they drafted him out of high school. Can he do more? Sure. But does that mean he's been a disappointment? I don't agree with that.

I don't think Barron or Lemieux make up for the loss of him. And I want him here with Kakko. I've said before, I think the top 6 becomes a little soft when he's inevitably traded.

Barron's a wing.

I didn't say he was the same as Kreider?

For now, yes Lemieux is a bottom-6 player. Although is he incapable of 40 points? I don't think so.

I you re-read what I wrote, I said the dynamic will change on the team. The idea that a change is going to be made and his exact drop-in replacement is available and waiting is 99% untrue across all major sports.

This I agree with. They definitely lose some key elements with his loss. I'd be game for a 3 year deal. Beyond that I'll pass.

OK, I am not that familiar with them.

Just saying, if you can skate on a healed ankle sprain, it would seem odd that it would take 3 weeks to get back — after — you could start to skate on it. But could be that it’s normal, I don’t know.
Took about a year for mine to heal. I was running on uneven ground and stepped in hole. No physical therapy though.

I'm not saying you are over-hyping specifically, just I've seen other fans on twitter and here start to over hype him

Sorry if it came across that way

No worries, I wasn't sure if that was directed to me or not

I do feel Kreider was overhyped. He is a very good player but at the time he came up it was easy to over-project his sills/size

What seems intriguing about Barron is that his size and thickness give the appearance of someone capable of playing a heavy game and with a fairly heavy shot. If he's becoming adept at deflections as well that's a great building block for developing a power forward game. Just depends on whether that's a top 6 power forward or a big, strong bottom six winger ala Boyle. Frankly, we could use either. In that regard, Barron perfectly fits one of our long term needs.

That said, like every forward prospect before him, Barron will need to make significant adjustments once he turns pro. But I'm very intrigued

What makes you think he should be more than he is offensively?

Does he have great hands? No. Does he have great puck handling skills? No. Does he have great vision? No. Is he a great passer? No. Does he have a great shot? No.

So, why should he be any more productive than he is? Because he’s a big guy who can skate fast?

It's very hard to go all out every shift when you play 20 minutes a game.
