Elliot Friedman doubled down on his comment that Gorton prefers dealing at the deadline and will be content to wait. While that may be true in general, Gortom may have learned a lesson about waiting too long.

I still feel like he will deal 1 forward ahead of the TDL. Lighten the load, and open up the top 9. He needs to get LA in there and Buch will push Fast down. The market will dictate the timeline but I don't think Gorton artificially delays a trade.

When exactly did he wait too long?

The accounts from last year were he was trying to move Zuccarello but the McDonagh deal monopolized his time.

To be clear, I was coming from a logistical sense. It wasn't a comment on value.

I don't think it will come down to just hayes and zucc on the block. Probably McQuaid, maybe Namestinkov. Maybe a wild card like Zibanejed or Kreider. But Gorton will have more than 2 bodies and he can't hurt their value because of deadline issues.

Talbot I’m guessing

Talbot had no value for several reasons.

- Backup goalie
- 1 year removed from UFA
- On a 1-year contract which means you can only negotiate after Jan 1st
- Other, younger, goalies on the trade block at the same time which means they are cost-controlled (Jones, Lehner)

We were never going to get much for Talbot. Just because he turned into a starter in Edmonton, doesn't mean his value was determined as him being a starter. Same with Raanta

I’m bored. Despite our better than expected start and positive direction, likely we’ll still be a bubble team and deadline sellers:

Likely to leave: Zuc, McQuaid

Possibles: Shatty, Staal, Smith, Hayes, Names

Outcome: I expect Zuc and McQuaid will go, Hayes will stay, and a Surprise or two like Names or Smith

Haul:
Zuc: late 1st rounder and B prospect especially if we eat some salary
McQuaid: I would settle for the purchase price but he may not get the time he needs to show value. I’d say a 4th and a contract. Maybe a 3rd if we send back a Pedrie or something.
Names: not quite worth a 1st imo so maybe we send a 3rd back to get that 1st.
Smith: I think some teams will be high on him despite remaining term. 4.35 is decent when he’s playing to capability. Maybe we retain 500k to polish it up. I’d take a 2nd with a B and C prospect here.

We lose: Zuc, Names, McQ, Smith, Pedrie, and a 3rd

We gain: 2 1sts, a 2nd, a worse 3rd, 3 prospects (2 Bs, 1C)

We buy out Staal in off season (no longer a slam dunk decision)
Sign Claesson, Hayes, other RFAs
Sign Panarin
Sign a vet RHD

Kreider Hayes Chytil
Panarin Ziba Kravtsov
Vesey Howton Buch
Strome Andersson Fast
(Lettieri, Whoever)

Skjei Pionk
Cleasson Shatty
Hajek/Rykov ADA/FA vet

Hank (Georgie/Shesty)

Waiting In the wings: we have decent D depth in Miller, Keane, Lindgren, Lundkvist but we need more higher ceiling Fs in the pipeline via the trades above or draft.

Less than a week to go until the Nylander situation is either resolved or finished for the year. That probably has some impact on everything.

Rangers have a fairly light December and easy schedule so they'll appear in it if they play similar to how they have most of this month. This might change how quickly thing moves.

I'm a proponent of Hayes being moved, and here is my unsolicited take:

His best 2 seasons were in these past 2 contract years.
He stands to get a raise as a UFA for 2 way play, but also pedestrian numbers.
He will certainly demand NMC years.
There are younger, cheaper and potentially better center options in the system. The amount of options could create a situation where a center, paid as a #2, was 4th on the depth chart.
Considering current performance, contract status and positional depth, Hayes is our best asset to address orginzational weakness.

Hayes
Zucc
Buchnevich
One of Pionk or Shatty
Mcquaid

Haul
1 young good roster player
1 right d a prospect
2 firsts this year
A third
1 first next season

This is just nonsense that originated from a beatwriter, the Rangers are capable of handling more than one trade at once if they so desire. Gorton can trade Zucc any time if that's what he wants, teams are interested.

But I believe Quinn wants to keep him, because of his experience, great personality and team value.
Then he won't be going anywhere, they could always reach an agreement before the trade deadline.

Forgive me if I trust the beat writer over the fanboy journalist based all the way over in Norway. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the guy getting inside info for decades.

Zuc's game has been declining. Yes he's been injured, but he doesn't win one on one battles like he used to and his defensive coverage isn't as good. This has been going on for the entire calendar year.

I know a lot of people are up in arms about the Rangers not giving Hayes some term now that he's arguably playing the best that he ever has. However, I think it might work out in the Rangers favor. I bet a lot of teams will be calling up Gorton early in the new year to follow up on Hayes talks that include a deal with an extension in place. Gorton might want to get out ahead of the market and then leave himself the deadline to move guys like Zucc and McQuaid.

Gorton had 5 assets he was trying to trade last season. He moved 4 of them, some before deadline day itself. The pressure to move guys who still have a full year left on their deal will be less this time around. Yes, there’s Namestnikov and Vesey, but those aren’t big chips like McDonagh and Zuccarello. Kreider I think is more likely to stay. So really the pressure will be on for just 3 players: Hayes, Zuccarello and McQuaid... and a McQuaid deal will be simple like the Holden one was.

Hayes should 100% be traded...his value must be thru the roof right now. And I'm not altogether convinced this is him going forward.
Definitely agree he should be moved, but I do think this is him going forward. It’s not like he’s getting lucky with points, I truly believe it’s actual development in his game
I would not be opposed to Hayes resigning in the offseason either
