As much as I want us to sign JT, trade for EK and ink Kovy...I feel we really need to dig in deep. Move some of our vets for more picks/kids and get through the next 2-3 seasons of tough but hopefully exciting youthful hockey with many growing pains and joys...

I've never been so excited for a draft in my life :) we're in a really good position
Me too but all these pages on getting EK is putting the Kibosh on that. I'm in no mood at all to trade away Chytil, Skjei, Lias, any of these years first rounders except maybe 28 and Shesty. Or next years first!

Regarding the EK deal, it would be a terrible idea to take him at fair value in a hockey trade. We'd be torpedoing our own rebuild to jumpstart Ottawa's.

But if you can leverage the checkbook to get him + Ryan for a relatively small package...? And then potentially flip him for full value...? That's a different story, and dependent on the details.

I'm down with Karlsson but if they get him, the whole rebuild thing was a bit fat lie

You're not trading for Karlsson to suck for a couple years

I think most people didn't really expect Karlsson to go on the market. Depending on what it cost, he could greatly accelerate a rebuild. But the cost would probably be enough to put this team back to the point where when it'd be a legitimate contender, Karlsson would probably be declining

Ehh I dunno about that.

I’m not worried about what he’ll look like in 5 years or what he’d cost salary wise. I am afraid of what he would cost in assets in a trade though.

Trading for him would be so short sided and dumb and like HS said, a total put asses in the seats and appease our aging goalie move. Trading for EK with the state that our team is in right now is not a move that good franchises make. In fact unless you get him for an incredibly low price, I’d lose all faith in Gorton.

Sadly when the word of Hayes becoming available broke out EK was the first player that came to mind. It goes against everything he said he was going to do a few months ago and they haven’t deviated from the plan yet so we’ll see what happens.

I dont' think there's even really news that Hayes is available, at least anymore so than he was when they first started this rebuild, it's just that he is one of the more desirable assets the Rangers have and teams are calling.

No, you rotate Deangelo and Pionk for the year, and see what you have.

Yeah, I can’t believe people prioritizing the rebuild over Shatty. He took fewer year to sign here, how will it look for future UFAs if we now prioritize the kids over a vet?

I don't have any interest in adding Karlsson as anything other than a UFA. He said he's not taking a hometown discount, and that he expects market value on his next contract. If you can get him for nothing but cash, that's an epic win. But, you know Ottawa is going to be looking for a haul with everything going on with their franchise. Let some other team give it to them, then swoop in when he's a UFA and make your strongest pitch. He's going to be on the wrong side of 30 for most of his next contract, and it would be a disaster if we mortgaged the future on top of giving him a Scrooge McDuck-sized vault of money.

Would you resign with Ottawa if you were him? They really have no future.

Odds are the final numbers are holding up any deals? Bobby Mac added to it:

Wow, 80m cap with 1.2% inflator. The NHL did extremely well this last season. 100m cap within how long??

I am also a little bit bitter that the cap was flat when we were good, this benefits all good teams.

And, if you thought a UFA was a 5m player, will he get 7m per now? BTW, who the heck is advising someone like Cam Atkinson? He would easily get 7x7 on the market. So many teams would afford him, no players available to spend the cap space on. Prices go up.

Well, the cap in 2008 was ~50M. So it could theoretically get to 100 in about 7-8 years.

4 years unless something major happen.

Over a very long time, underlying HRR is growing way over 5% per season. Despite a horrible financial climate. That gets us to 100m in 4 years.

Between 08’ and now you have the roll back of the player share from 57% to 50%. The financial crash held back the market way into 2011-2012.

The CDN/USD rate is at 0.75 now. It was over 1 like 10 years ago. It’s always fluctuating, currencies. The CDN isn’t going much lower than this, and it could easily go up towards 0.8-0,9. It will, currencies goes up and down. That will push the gap upwards too.

The scenario were the cap goes to 100m within three years is definitely not ridiculous, albeit maybe not likely.
