I don't have any interest in adding Karlsson as anything other than a UFA. He said he's not taking a hometown discount, and that he expects market value on his next contract. If you can get him for nothing but cash, that's an epic win. But, you know Ottawa is going to be looking for a haul with everything going on with their franchise. Let some other team give it to them, then swoop in when he's a UFA and make your strongest pitch. He's going to be on the wrong side of 30 for most of his next contract, and it would be a disaster if we mortgaged the future on top of giving him a Scrooge McDuck-sized vault of money.

If I knew I could get Cody Glass++ from Vegas I'd at least inquire about the cost for Karlsson adjusted for taking Ryan back as well.

Really comes down to whether or not you feel like you can profit when all is said and done.

Very complex scenario but that is pretty intriguing.

The lower limit is $55.4m. Ottawa is at $59.2. Trading EK and Ryan puts them about $10m under. 16 players at that point. Just like the Hoffamn trade, their big ask won't be a haul of prospects. They want bodies back.

I am no proponent of Karlsson, time lines, the cost, paying for past play, etc. If gorton does it, he does it. The bright side I would hope for is that the price is low because of Ryan and the fact nhl bodies go back instead of the rebuild pieces. Smith (doubt Staal waives), a piece like buch/skjei (something has to hurt), late 1st (hurts), and spooner/namestnikov. I prefer to just methodically rebuild and not jump off the rails so soon. But that is livable.

This was discussed before as well. I'd be okay with taking on Ryan as a dump IF Ottawa or Vegas held some money on it as long as the Rangers got paid for it

Take Ryans whole salary then flip him by retaining. Hayes Name and spoon are all rfa ..the sens go to arb with them to lower salary's and term goes to 1 year.

So... they'd be selling Karlsson for a year of some middle 6 guys who they then lose?

lol

what is it with the fetish of eating 30 million dollars of Bobby "I miss 20 games a year and when I do play I average 30 points" Ryan so we get the Kings Ransom of HF Memorial 2nd round pick(tm)

I think we can get away with more than a 2nd round pick. If we managed to get Zibby + 2nd rounder for Brassard just because Melnyk wanted to save like $5M and eventually never pay Zibby on his $5M+ contract, we can get a lot more for Ryan and his $29M payout.

even if you COULD its a pretty massive opportunity cost for random futures.

I see people complaining about not being patient for the rebuild and wanting SHINY THING NOW without a trace of irony that this sort of move is the SHINY THING NOW in the form of draft picks while almost inevitably hamstringing flexibility down the road.

but its the shiny thing they want so its okay

I think we could profit. I also believe if Glass was available that Karlsson would have went to Vegas at the deadline. IIRC, the hangup was Vegas not wanting to include Glass.

This whole EK rumor has to be BS. You're telling me some random reporter in Canada with less than 2k followers has more insight than Bob and others? Others would have reported this by now if true.

Yeah that's the rumor, but my guess is that maybe that changes if they're not taking back Ryan's contact. I don't think we'd get through guys from Ottawa for a song, but if it's cheap enough it'd be a hell of a power move from Gorton.

This isn't a full rebuild, we know that some veterans will stay. They want to compete as soon as possible.

Dolan said the Rangers should go out there and look for a difference maker, Karlsson could be that man.

Can never rule anything out but if the Rangers did trade for Karlsson, I just don't see them turning around and flipping him. If they trade for him it tells me that they are going to be attempting to contend much sooner than we expected. Maybe this season is one where you let the chips fall where they may, hope that guys like Chytil/Andersson/Pionk/ADA establish themselves as atleast solid NHL'ers, and then go full bore in 19-20.

And Lundqvist was drafted in the 7th round. Does not mean you can find another elite goalie in the 7th round. Well, you can if you are extremely lucky. But your chances to win the Powerball are bigger. Karlsson was drafted outside the top-5 but that's an exception.

It is, but there are other elite players who aren't drafted 1st overall. It would have been great to get Dahlin, but missing out on him doesn't mean we have to get Karlsson.
