Breaking down isn't just a function of missed games. He's slowing down and physically struggling to keep up. Ryan is getting slashed in his hands. Granted, Ryan is losing a step too. My bold prediction is he can contribute more than lucic and he can play a full season if his hands get stronger.

But yeah, sarcastic replies to posts on hypothetical questions, where the poster solicited responses is pretty justified.

Lucic was slow to begin with. He's not lost a step. It looks that way playing next to the fastest player in the game today.

What was the reasoning for the 20+ goal and 50 point season before? Or the 55 point season before that?

I'm not buying the "slowing down" narrative

I like Bobby Ryan. Think he can be a decent add, but I have no faith that after missing 20 and 20 the last two years, that he can all of a sudden remain healthy.

And with a team that will be flush with youngsters, while the old school goon is out of fashion, I still believe that there is a need for someone as un-predictable as Lucic is. His un-predictability alone will keep opposing pests on their toes. And if he crosses the line every so often, that's fine as well.

I am a big Lucic fan but I dont know. If we are going to take on salary I would rather someone like Hagelin. Keep the speed up. Or add both if one of those teams eats a little bit of salary.

I like a deal like this:

NYR: Lucic with $1 Mil retained + the 10OA pick.

EDM: Spooner, 2nd Round pick, 3rd Round pick.

NYR: Hagelin with $1 Mil retained, Sprong

PIT: 3rd round pick, 4th round pick

LeBrun: The candidates for a Ryan O'Reilly trade

Let's toss this around. O'Reilly is owned $7.5m in signing bonuses on July 1. $1m base salary for 5 more years. 27 years old. Buffalo is looking to move him, preferably by friday.

So, would it make sense to acquire him, pay the bonus on July 1 and then flip him to Carolina, Ottawa, Arizona or any other cap floor, cash needing team?

The shorter contracts would be ideal. A list of some of the guys who have been discussed:

Paul Martin - 1 year @ $4.85
Brooks Orpik - 1 years @ $5.5m
Carl Hagelin - 1 year @ $4m
Tyler Ennis - 1 year @ $4.6
Matt Martin - 2 years @ $2.5m
Matt Moulson - 1 year @ $5m
Kyle Clifford - 1 year @ $1.6m
Marian Hossa'a contract - 3 years $ $5.275m - LTIR
Ryan Callahan - 2 years @ $5.8m
Adam McQuaid - 1 year @ $2.75m
Zack Smith - 3 years @ $3.25m
Alex Burrows - 1 year @ $2.5m
Jason Spezza - 1 year @ $7.5m
Steve Mason - 1 year @ $4.1m

New names:
Nick Bonino - 3 years @ $4.1m
Troy Brouwer - 2 years @ $4.5m
Andrew Shaw - 4 years @ $3.9m
Marian Gabroik - 3 years @ $4.875m
Jori Lehtera - 1 year @ $4.7m
Johan Fransen - 2 years @ $3.954m - LTIR
Nicklas Kronwall - 1 year @ $4.75m
Jonathan Ericsson - 2 years @ $4.25m
Martin Hanzal - 2 years @ $4.75m
Nathan Beaulieu - 1 year @ $2.5m
Derek Dorsett - 1 year @ $2.65m
Scott Darling - 3 years @ $4.15m
Jay Bouwmeester - 1 year @ $5.4m
Matt Hunwick - 2 years @ $2.25m
Jamie McGinn - 1 year @ $3.33m

Editing to add a couple in bold

Not to quote myself, but I would look at:

Steve Mason
Carl Hagelin
Matt Martin
Tyler Ennis
Paul Martin

Depending on what their teams were willing to send over

It 100% would, however I don't see Buffalo needing to use a team in the middle. They're a team with an owner who is more than willing to spend

Not really because his contract has four more years (with the same terms) to run.

I wouldn't mind Lucic if he had 2 or maybe 3 years left, but he has too much term imo. 4 years left, NMC and modified NTC for the last years. That's a really horrendous deal.

I think he could, at worst, be a serviceable bottom 6 guy for another year or two but there's just too much term.

Editing to add a couple in bold

Orpik for the 31st Overall
Hagelin + Sprong for a 7th
Martin for a 2019 2nd
Mason for a 2019 1st

Any 2 of those I will take

Right, but @DutchShamrock's point is that we can serve as a middleman and earn some nice assets simply for eating the $7.5MM up front. Could be valuable to a cost-conscious team, in the same way that waiting to do the Brassard for Zibanejad deal was valuable to Ottawa. $7.5MM is $7.5MM, regardless of the years that follow...

Yes but you help the team acquiring him *this* year because you cover that bonus for them as a one time thank you.

Gotta be worth a 5th rounder. We need all the lottery picks we can get

If I'm taking on Lucic, it's at 50%. That contract is a killer.

Fixed it for you
For the Senators yes. If you break down that trade it looks like this:

Skjei (due for a raise) and a late 1st for EK. As long as EK re-signs this is an easy win.

Ryan + 2nd round pick for nothing; we are getting a 2nd to take on the salary. One thing I would change is making the 2nd rounder a 1st and/or Ottawa eating some salary.

So what teams are really going to be in cap hell?

Florida appears to be close, especially if they are looking to add another piece.

LA is in the same boat and they have to re-sign Rieder

Chicago for sure

Pittsburgh for sure with Oleksiak, Sheahan, Rust, Kuhnhackl all needing contracts

Edmonton definitely with Strome and Nurse needing contracts

Minnesota needs to pay Dumba and Zucker

Washington if they want Carlson back

San Jose if they want to spend big in UFA or bring back Thornton. They need to re-sign Hertl

He also said Calgary was interested in Hayes, which seems to be true. Doesn't necessarily mean he's credible but it's possible.

I think you'd have to go back and look at the time stamps on the tweets and compare them to when we heard similar info out of other people. Tons of guys just regurgitate info they pick up around the web and claim to have sources.
Judging from his twitter this guy basically claims to have sources with every single team as he's always saying "I reached out to a source with X team and..." which off the bat sounds pretty BS
