They've run really bad scoring wise and that'll normalize but the forwards still don't really backcheck and the NZ is still an expressway... they're gonna be 11th in the conference come deadline and sell. Book it.
if they had done anything but given igor the deal after troubas exit - ostensibly to heal the locker room - i would see your point. But they didn't - they gave igor the deal to get his head right to make the playoffs. They are competing. Dolan sees three years of playoffs and says "they can't be this bad all of a sudden.. Chris, do what you have to do to fix this and get us back to the playoffs." How soon you all forget who's ship this is, who calls the shots.

We are buyers. We are trading the pick.

any answer to this question is based on the assumption of "what kind of player is Panarin?"

Is he a dominant offensive force that would raise a contenders existing ceiling to crazy new heights for years to come?

Or is he a small, fading skill winger who is known to become easily neutralized and essentially ineffective come playoff time?

Well he's on a shit team right now with 40 points in 37 games and had a ppg in the playoffs last year. If a contending team was ADDING him to their team, he's the type of piece that propels a team through a series by himself if he gets hot.

The price is right - so he is worth a shot , but........
Kaaliyev lacks speed and is considered a poor skater which the Rangers seem to have a fetish for.

the difference is those guys stink.

also - we only started losing once Goodrow left. something to chew on
It’s always great to have your leadership in the top 6. But if not, you still need it. And remember Goodrow was one of our better playoff performers last year. As some have said, we don’t need more regular season scoring. We need playoff performers. At least we used to say that.

okay now argue the other side of it, is what i'm saying. If the rangers were on pace to win presidents trophy, what would you trade for Panarin?

Perreault? Laf? Schneider? Multiple 1sts? These are the types of pieces posters are expecting in return.

Not really. You could say the same thing about Gustafsson or Wheeler. We were president's trophy winner with those guys!

The truth is, Goodrow had his moments, but he was overpaid for what he brought. It's funny how many people hated him and wanted him gone, and now that he's gone, people are romanticizing what he meant to the team.

He has 4 points in 37 games and is a -21 playing 14:23 per game for SJ. He has the worst pts/60 of any forward with 400+ mins played in the league this year. Number 275 out of 275. Also number 275 out of 275 in GF%. He is better in xG% though. Number 274 out of 275. How much exactly do you think his leadership is worth to offset that massive detriment on the ice?

As a member of the "having a fractured clavicle at one point" club, I can tell you that it is very possible it will take a year+ to get strength back and I can't imagine taking a hit on the boards a decade later. Not optimistic on this one.

/hfdoc
depends on the level of fracture and pro sports has some whacky shit that regular people don't get when it comes to healing (PEDS)

If I was a team like Dallas who clearly has a window open to them over the next 1-2 seasons with the mix of their veterans and young players and could add a player like Panarin for 2 playoff runs, yes. Let's just think back, MSL returned (2) 1st's and Callahan (who was probably worth a 2nd + at the time easily as a pending UFA) and he really only wanted to go to NY.

MSL was close to 40 years old.

I agree, but both guys like to shoot the puck. I sense that the next iteration of this team will be full of guys who are a bit more difficult to play against and who won't be overpassing
The next iteration of the this team is going to be the early to mid 2010's teams all over again.

They have a lot of sandpaper and a lot of guys who are safe bets to be NHL contributors.

Elite talent is almost non-existent.

Granted, those teams had some good runs but they had a few really lucky trades and stumbled upon the perfect mix of players for what they had. It's the hard of way of doing things like it always is here.

This is the right move. Rempe needs to play regularly and more than 4-6 minutes a night.
yes on da bold, but no otherwise; needs be in NHL w/us, not in the A

also, FOR THE UMPTEENTH TIME, DITCH VESEY

The differentiator is we have Fox and those teams didn’t have that elite offensive defenseman. McDonagh was elite but obviously not as skilled. But from my point of view, the goal of the FO has to be finding a way to add an elite center. I don’t care what it takes, whether it’s overpaying in UFA or a trade. We should have enough middle-six wingers and hopefully Perreault is a high end winger.

Those teams also sunk themselves with bad players. When you don't have McDavid, MacKinnon, or Kucherov, that's all the more pressure to have everyone in the lineup being a contributor.

No more bad players.

The Kaliyev pickup was a bit encouraging. Even if he stays what he is now, he's an NHL player. I'd rather have a guy who can take a shift and pot 15 goals than whatever intangibles bullshit they tell themselves.

That’s exactly right, the 13-14 team was the closest we have had to what you’re mentioning except for Girardi playing way over his head. And it almost got us a cup.

Look at a guy like Benoit Pouliot. Definitely not the archetype of a solid third liner, but was a massive part of one of the best third lines we’ve ever had. Trying to pigeon hole guys into specific roles in hockey is honestly stupid 9/10 times. the goal should just be to have as many good players as possible. this isnt a matchup league, it’s an “overwhelm with talent” league

Alright here's what I'm thinking for the next few games at least,

Keep Laf with Trocheck & Panarin for now on the 1st line, bump Smith over to LW on the 2nd line with Zibanejad and promote Berard to 2RW. He's earned it. Then run a 3rd line of Cuylle-Chytil-Kaliyev just to test the waters. Kaliyev has seemed to play good with a play-driving play-making center like Danault and Chytil is one of the best at that on the Rangers. Give him 2nd PP Unit time while we're at it too.

If/when Kaliyev starts potting loose pucks that nearly everyone on the Rangers can't seem to pickup or read, promote him into the top-6 group and give him as many cups of coffee as you can with Artemi Panarin.

Artemi -----> Arty Party = Golden chest of G
