I wouldn't even look at wingers in the draft with our 1st round pick if I were the GM. In fact, I wouldn't even look at them in any draft ever with our first, unless we had a second (lower) first round pick. I would focus on Center and Defense. The second round and later can be for wingers. 4th and later for goalies.

Long rangy defenders that can skate and know how to get the puck out of the zone in multiple ways.

Centers with high offensive upside.

I'd look at wingers in rounds 3/4 and later

You have to pay for that. Is Buffalo selling low because Cozens isn't performing right now, or is Buffalo selling him as a player who put up 68 points at such a young age? I think there's a big gap in value here and I'm not sure if Buffalo is looking to get out of that deal without some massive overpayment.
They badly want out of that deal while getting a return commensurate with his 68 point year and not his other mediocre years.

Buffalo *should* have an incredibly easy time making trades, but they want top dollar for the pieces of their 12 win team. It's likely ownership.

We don't really have an answer to this. My personal speculation is Drury wasn't willing to threaten him with waivers until it was obvious Trouba had poisoned the locker room. Drury probably shouldve known this was going to happen once it came out that they were made over Goodrow's exit. I wouldn't personally fire him now but the lack of foresight has deservedly put him on the hot seat. The season is likely a wash depending on how he does in the trades coming up.
How and why did Trouba poison the locker room?

Did you mean mad over Goodrows exit?

I'd take Martone.

We're all clamoring for our own Tkachuk... and it looks like he'll be that type of guy. It might not be as 'sexy' as a Hagen pick but Martone is the type of player you win with.

End of the day, this rangers squad didn’t have the critical mass of leadership needed to get a team a Cup. They’re good guys and talented and occasionally looked amazing. But something was and is missing. And now the wheels are coming off. And the GM is banging the nails into the coffin. I guess it’s going to be interesting to see where this all goes. Big changes coming. Not sure I’m gonna be paying close attention, to be honest.

The question I have asked and no one seems to have an answer is why was Trouba unwilling to go anywhere over the summer but 2 months into the season goes across the country to play for a bad team?

I honestly can't remember for sure what the difference was but I think the contract terms may have been different during the season. I seem to remember something to that effect being said over the summer. My memory is bad but I think Drury had a list of teams Trouba had to accept. Drury told him he could be waived and then Trouba would not have any choice where he went. Trouba liked California so he said yes to the Ducks after a day of thinking about it. I know CBJ were somewhere in the talks either as a trade or a likely waiver pickup.

One interesting piece about Hagens. The family wants him to finish school. All 4 yrs. The parents also negotiated full rides for the other siblings if James committed to play for BC. Smart move for them. $67K Annual Tuition.
And this is why I'm not convinced he goes 1st overall. I think this may scare more than a few teams.

They moved Trouba, Goodrow, and Kakko yet somehow it feels they still haven’t made any progress.
Patience. You need to get rid of all of the tumors before you can go into remission.

Drury is only getting started.

How does Schaefer project and what are potential NHL comparisons?
Top pairing defenseman.

Scott Niedermayer reincarnate top end potential. Floor is Esa Lindell.

I can f*** with this. Minus overpaying Bennett. What's your projected defense? It needs to be totally rebuilt outside of Fox and Schneider, IMO.

I didnt think too far ahead with the D, only that it needs to be completely remade outside the guys you said. I think the cost for Cozens would be Schneider and im willing to pay that in this scenario.

A vanilla Kreider to Dallas deal would not work because Dallas does not have a lot of cap space (~550k).
  • If we retain 50%, his number drops to $3.25M.
  • Dadonov (1 year $2.25M) and Dumba (2 years $3.75M) are plausible cap dumps.
So if we are retaining and taking on cap, suddenly, I can see a world where we are getting much much more for Kreider. The 3 years of retention alone is probably worth a 1st. For cap dumps, we've given up two 2nds for similar cap dumps in the past (Staal, Nemeth), I think Kreider needs to go on a heater prior to the TDL to drive up his value and GM's desperation to acquire him. There essentially needs to be a bidding war as opposed to a situation where Kreider's MNTC is able to limit Drury's trade partner down to one team; something we've been on the beneficial side of more than once.

LA seems like a likely destination. They have A LOT more cap space.

Stars have 10mil in cap space once they slide Seguin to LTIR. He’s likely done until the start of the playoffs anyway

Yeah he looks good. But those dudes always become available. Brady Tkachuk is available now. Matthew before. Vegas traded for 3. Top centers and D are never available. You could probably draft Hagens and then in 3 years when you are battling for a cup trade quantity for Martone himself and win. Haha
