I don't know and won't presume to know everything that goes into decisions regarding suspensions. But a lot of fans seem to think they know, and some of those fans make ridiculous claims, meanwhile written policies from the DOPS, the NHL rulebook and the CBA are all available to be read.

For example, hearings involve an interview of the player "and his representatives" about the play in question, and then afterward a punishment is decided. And a player is considered by the DOPS to be a repeat offender based on the previous 18 months following the most recent incident. Being a repeat offender or not effects how much salary is forfeited.

And, technically the CBA is why a player gets punished with harsher penalties if they repeatedly violate rules. That distinction matters because it means the players themselves agreed to this, and DOPS is doing what they're supposed to do as part of that agreement. Even if, yes, there appear to be inconsistencies, and yes, the way things are handled are sometimes flawed.

Rempe has played less than 30 NHL games and has injured multiple players on hits. A few of those were arguably incidental, a few definitely were against the rules. He has definitely earned his reputation very, very fast.

Rempe's build is a bit of an anomaly, sure, but you don't have look far to find an example he could learn from. Rempe is listed as 6'9 currently, and Edstrom is listed as 6'8. Has Edstrom once thrown a hit like the ones that got Rempe in trouble? And Rempe has injured a few players without getting penalized too. Edstrom hasn't been as physical at times as he could or should be, but when he has, he's stayed within the rules. If he can, why can't Rempe?

My speculation is that a hit where a player is "shaken up" can be deemed an injury, and if that happens often, that alone could be considered a pattern. So that's how I would personally define it. When you earn a reputation and injure several players in such a short timeframe, it probably seems like grounds for stiffer punishment. I also would guess that Rempe's comments or conduct during his hearing was unhelpful to his cause.

Regardless of anyone's feelings on Rempe I think everyone agrees he has things he needs to learn. And if there's any purpose to a punishment from the league, it would be to get a player to fix whatever they're doing that is against the rules and might injure other players. Evidently, he hasn't learned yet, so he needs a harsher lesson... that's what he's getting.

The blame for this whole Rempe situation lies at the feet of the Ranger organization. Asking a 21 or 22 year old to go out and hit everything that moves while full well knowing that he has limited body control and skating ability was always a recipe for disaster. What exactly was the rush to get him in games last year? And after they saw what happened last season they thought, lets try this again? I say this as someone who really likes REmpe's potential and style of play but he was always a long term project. Unfortunately, the Rangers have put him in a position to fail. Good organizations dont do that with their prospects. Hockey is different here. I keep thinking of what this kid could be at age 24 or 25 if developed properly. He seems to have a great work ethic, attitude and self awareness that he needs alot of work on his game. At this current rate he will be banned from the league at 24 and he will have Drury to thank for it.

Lack of leadership. Rempe is a good kid getting shafted by the league with no assistance from the organization, coaches or teammates on the ice.

Feel badly for the kid, as he's making peanuts in comparison to literally everyone. What I don't feel badly about, is how he obviously doesn't understand that this will happen again and again. The league doesn't have to watch with a magnifying glass either.
Apparently he has more rocks in his head, than I have in my front yard. What is so hard for him to understand? He LOVES this game so much, you can see it. Pull in the reigns a bit @(Rempe). Don't ya' wanna play?

The problem for Rempe is his popularity comes from fights and hits. Fights need to happen sometimes and hitting is part of the game, but you don't need to go starting fights and hitting people all the time. Its more like you should be battling to try and score. Then if a fight or hit happen so be it but dont go looking for trouble. Rempe needs to learn the art of the LEGAL hit and the art of battling to the net. He has a lot of potential and needs better coaching. I like how he drew 3 penalties in the last game. That part was just great. The hit that got him suspended that was bad judgement. His coach needs to address that and explain how thats a dumb decision and he needs to play smarter.

Wonder what Tom Wilson's intent was when he slammed Panarin's head into the ice twice within seconds. We all saw the action. The action was pretty clear. So then when Jimmy Dolan called Parros out the league got seriously into a huff and defended him and fined the Rangers. The next game against the Caps is the one Buch highsticked Mantha---a for sure suspension I would think in most cases anyway but not nearly the same level as what Wilson got away with which the league decided to defend.

And in the case last year of Bennett cold cocking and knocking loopy Marchand in the playoffs.....the league decided not to look at the play until after the next game in the series had already been played and because of that the league decided it was too late to suspend Bennett and one could ask two questions there 1) why didn't they take a close look right after it happened? and 2) why couldn't they suspend Bennett anyway?

And the answer to everything is they pick and choose and make things up as they go along however it pleases them.....but they don't like it when people think they're full of shit.
Yep. 100%. Pretty sure that if the game following the Wilson attack on Panarin was against, say, any team other than Washington, Wilson gets suspended. The league was itching for a massive brouhaha. Didn’t Laviolette de-fuse things by sitting Wilson anyhow?

No, Brendan Smith was the only Ranger man enough to face Wilson in the next game. Strome fought, and a few other guys like Rooney and DiGiuseppe. Kinda revived Smitty's career as a guy on his way out of the league at that point. The Rangers never learned their lesson from that because shockingly, no one has fought Wilson on the Rangers since. Trouba, Kreider, Lindgren, Reaves(!), Goodrow, all had plenty of chances. The pack mentality never developed for this team. It's why everyone is out there playing for themselves every night. The Wilson/Panarin shit wasnt some nothing moment. They didnt defend their stars and still don't. Some end of game crosscheck from Fox to Aho is all the comeuppance he ever got for wrecking Fox's season (and career?) with that blatant knee. That's just one of countless examples.

Yeah. The team will occasionally send out a try hard like Smith or Rempe for a meaningless staged fight. When has anyone on the team gone ballistic after a dirty play by an opponent. I remember Mike Rupp doing it once like 15 years ago… I mean, when the team is winning we can call it ‘taking the high road’. But really it’s endemic lack of togetherness. I’m sure the guys like each other and enjoy playing with each other. But for better or worse the nhl requires a different mentality.

It reminds me of when the Rangers had just signed Gaborik back in the late 2000s. Carcillo got him alone against the Flyers and beat the crap out of him, Girardi and Del Zotto sat around doing nothing. Avery fought Carcillo later but no one stood up for the star in the moment. I remember Torts and it being a thing in the media.

P.S. Funny that there are calls to fire Lavi (myself included). Torts was afforded 3 years without winning a playoff round before he finally had a team that went deep. Different game now I guess, guys used to be afforded the rope to build a foundation.

Christ....Edstrom hardly has done anything with that size......hopefully somebody wakes him up in the second half and he throws some hits and becomes more physically involved or else we'll get a smaller more robust guy that will provide some spark as he is not getting any younger ......what does he have 1 goal ? Time for him to use the muscle and be more bull than heifer .

I don’t think Lavi is gonna go and I don’t really blame him for this mess. And I think Drury knows it’s a players issue not a coaching issue.
Though not sure Lavi is going to want to hang around for a couple years of sucking while they re-tool.

I really think they have every intention of competing next year, if not sooner if everything goes right. Drury is performing open heart surgery on a living patient at the moment, I would like to see where he goes with it but they are flatlining.

Yeah. I agree, they’re not going to rebuild. That’s why I was saying re-tool.

If they can somehow hand the reins over to guys like Cuylle and Lafreniere, maybe the attitude improves. Maybe they’re tougher to play against.

But they probably won’t have the talent to seriously contend. They might not even be in the playoffs for a couple seasons. That’s why I wonder if Lavi is the right guy. But maybe he is actually.

I’m glad that’s not my job to figure out. It’s gonna be a big challenge for management.

The league is so wide open and diluted nowadays, as long as they can get Fox and Lafreniere and Igor playing at their top capabilities again, they'll be a sure playoff team going forward. Bad vibes about this season obviously. Building around them and Cuylle, Berard, Perreault, Othmann. Get bigger on D. Its doable. If they can ever get their 5v5 game to a positive level they'll be a favorite with Igor.

I think you’re right…but I just worry about the path to get there. I think it’s gonna take a little while.

Can't wait until he's back in the lineup. He's the only entertaining aspect about this year's team.

Heck, play him in the top 6 if this team continues to look like garbage. Bern would be proud.

The numbers on their own don’t tell the whole story. I like him.

22 NHL Games 🏒
95 PIMS 🦓
6 Fights 💪🏻
4 Ejections 🤬
11 Games Suspended 👀
2 Points 🚨
I wonder if he had to pay his own fine or would the team contribute ? Once upon a time teams would man up and help out .
