I didn’t ignore it. What center are you getting for Buchnevich without taking a bath on value? If you move Strome, where is the upgrade? Chytil is a wing. Would you rather play Haley or Chytil? That makes you tougher.
There aren’t easy solutions for this. It doesn’t happen over night. If Quinn has a system they could mitigate some of this with play style, but they don’t have that kind of identity.
You're asking for a definitvie answer to one I cant give you. That does not mean it is not possible. My #1 target would be Cirelli and move down from there. If hes not available or will cost too much, on to the next. You even listed centers... Bonino or Bozak fit the bill. You even said it yourself, we need PK help. We need to win faceoffs.... things that make it tougher to play against us...

My definition of tough to play against does not = NHL Goon. Jesper Fast is the good example of 'TTPA'. Battle for the puck. Forecheck. Backcheck. Do all the things that are necessary to win. That's a mindset/attitude. You either have it or you dont. You can pretend to have it for a handful of games ( USA Buch ) but you will come back to the norm eventually... ( Regular Buch )

To simplify it... Are we capable of playing Playoff Hockey. When Torts' was here we were way too far in 1 direction. Now, we're way too far in the opposite direction. We need to approach the Goldilocks zone somewhere in the center.

How will bonuses/incentives for Laf work? Do we need to budget for them in next year’s cap or can we punt them to the following season? I’d have to imagine he has the potential to get close to the 800K max.

I'd be fine with:

Buch + Hajek + CAR 1st for Lindholm

Georgiev to SJ for COL 2nd '20 + PIT 3rd '21

Staal bought out or demoted
Hank retires
Smith back as #7 d-man

Kreider-Zibanejad-Kakko/Gauthier/Fast
Panarin-Strome-Gauthier/Kakko/Fast
Lafreniere-Chytil-Fast/Gauthier/Kakko
Janmark-Howden-Lemieux

Lindholm-Trouba
Lindgren-Fox
Hajek-ADA
Smith

When I read about being tougher to play against, I think back to my observation while watching the series against the Hurricanes.

One of the biggest differences between the Rangers and Carolina was that Carolina was on our puck-possessing players in the hurricanes zone in milliseconds, often forcing them to make a mistake or forcing the puck from them. Meanwhile, the Rangers sat back and let the opposing players have all the time and space in the world, like they where waiting for the perfect pass to break up.

One strategy is harder to play against. The other is not.

I can't determine if Lindholm would be my target or Nurse

I'd be really doubtful that Edmonton would deal Nurse without a good dman going back and his next contract could land him somewhere else as we won't be able to give him more than what he is making now. I like the player but honestly I feel we just need a little patience, we have good dmen prospects let's find out if they are able to do the job first. I look at trouba, I like him but if we had known how Fox and D'Angelo would work out and how Lindqvist would progress, would we make that deal again. I don't think we would. Same goes for the left side, let's wait and see if we can get 2 gpod players out of Miller, Jones and Robertson and not have to spend cap money there for a few years.

As it's been stated...

IF
a. Lafry Zibs = compliment each other. Lafry can carry the puck
b. Panarin Kakko - compliment each other. Panarin can carry the puck
c. Kreider Chytil - compliment each other. Chytil can carry the puck.

1. Who plays RW with line a.)? Buch? Kravtsov? Gauthier?
2. Who Centers line b.) ? Strome as a stop-gap? Is someone like Cirelli possible?
3. Is Chytil at RW or C? Who's the other piece? I wouldn't mind a player like Bonino or Bozak here.

one of the outcomes can be something like...

Lafry Zibs Gauthier
Panarin Strome Kakko
Kreider Bonino Chytil
Lemmy Howden Fast

The org has A LOT of routes they can take

the cap hit for bonus $$ can be carried over to the next year, I forget the % limit. and the max bonus he will get is $2.85 mil (based on hughes' contract from last year). but to hit that he will need to win the calder or be an allstar so if he is that good you don't mind paying.

you traded hajek and then have him in the lineup

the biggest issue right now with Laf is that he may not have anywhere to play for the next while. I'd say he would likely head overseas to play with an out clause if something doesn't change around here.

I think there is something to be said for having guys in their proper slots. Having Trouba allowed ADA and Fox to not have to play against the other teams best lines every night. A LD like Trouba would be a good investment to shelter a few of these guys

The Rangers would love to land Lindholm. Though I think the price is higher than what we have here.

Lots of past talks with Calgary, including about Buch. So there is history there.
Not that Lindholm
