It's a bubble team at best. No serious playoff contender would have Marc Staal in the top 4 and he would completely neutralize the positives that Trouba would bring.

The contracts for Kreider and Panarin are not realistic. Kreider is not taking a lesser deal than Brock Nelson if he signs this summer, Panarin is getting a 7th year.

It's Kreider or Panarin, not Kreider and Panarin.
I'm very aware of what the likely scenarios are and I've posted about them a ton; forgive me if I post one random lineup without context

Staals not leaving his Expenive CT Digs and relocating his family.

But why do you want Staal to leave? You love him and think he’s still a good hockey player.

I don't hate him, but we need to move on with the rebuild.

Can I trade Skjei because I want to maximize my chances at landing some transformative talent, which I'm pretty sure he isn't?
No, right now the board is in "every other post except mine and those that agree with mine are trash" mode right now

if Kreider has plateaued then why is his salary supposed to drastically increase? right now he is at 4.65 mil his type of production usually is around 5.5 mil. We shouldn't pay more than 6.25 mil

Sure, but God knows how you'd do it. He's an overpaid #4D on most teams without PP skills. His biggest strengths are skating and not doing really stupid things.

But the Rangers need guys who can play minutes with pace, and he can do that. So he's valuable to THEM but I don't see the appeal on the other end where they'd surrender chances at transformative talent for someone who's Just A Guy.

To be moveable, Shattenkirk has to greatly elevate his level of play. Even with only a year left on his contract.

As for Smith, I do not understand the need for him to go. Whats't he rush if he is starting on the 4th line? Who do you want to play 4th line minutes instead? That is what he was last year. I see little reason why he would suddenly vault into the starting defenseman role. Why needlessly deprive yourself of cap space?
My 4th as it stands now would be Vesey/Names/Fast with Boo as 13th. Or we try to get rid of Shatty now and keep Smith another year as 14th F / 8th D, not opposed to that but he doesn’t dress as it stands now imo.

Hey guys, the market value for $3M in cap is a 1st round pick. You don't need to swap picks if you are taking back a contract like that.

IMO the Rangers would be better served getting a Haula or Eakins... shorter team, and they insulate the middle six center position so a kid isn't thrown to the wolves.

Vegas' has a pair in Hague and Whitecloud who would be an NHL ready tandem. If you are bailing them on defense, then you need to consider that Miller's 3 years on the cap needs to come with a premium.

A swap of 20 & 17 isn't good enough.

If you're taking on those extra years, then have it be Pionk & a 2021 mid rounder, for Miller and the 17th.

Vegas needs 1 year of relief, and the Rangers can afford to take on 1 year of dead cap space. In 2021, the Rangers are wide open with the Cap. The question is if they start loading up this year, or next.

If this is another asset accumulation year, then have it be for 1 year.

I thought you were reacting to RangerBoy's proposal of Skjei for the 10th pick.

I think its general frustration with the knowledge that no matter how many times different people write "buy out Smith, trade Shattenkirk @ 50%" we're stuck with the same general defense we had this past year until 2021.

This goes back to the Malahkhov precedent, and the Rangers used this in the Zibanajed deal. In actual salary, the Rangers paid an additional $2M on Brassard, saving the Sens money. 2nd rounders are for $2M in salary, and that's the reason why the Rangers got an extra 2nd round pick in the Zibanajad deal.

CLB ponied up a 1st and a 2nd to Vegas to take on Clarkson. Clarkson is owed $3 & change in real dollars this year, thus the 1st.

I'm pretty sure the cap was $44 million when the Malakhov trade went down.

Not that I'm dissing either of these deals but serious question why are we going to take on Clarkson contract to move up 3 draft positions ? I get we can put Clarkson on LTD but I guess this is the cost of doing business.

Vegas is cap hell so I would rather personally try to get number 17 by taking on Clarkson without given up number 20.
A second round draft choice is worth $2-3MM. Reference point -- the timing of the Mika Zibanejad trade. Taking on the contract to move up three spots sounds like a fair deal. It makes it a little tougher to maneuver through the summer but not impossible. It may be part of a bigger deal though. Vegas cap is really a mess.
