I don't know how anyone could not believe the "static cap" is a thing lol
They renegotiated the CBA specifically for this reason
It’s a thing for next year.
beyond that? I’m not buying it.

If it were just that easy.
IIRC, Lias was seen by many as a "safe pick". His ceiling wasn't as high as a few left on the board but it was seen by many as having a floor of a 3C.

It doesn't work like that though. It’s a thing for next year.

I see a lot of talk that seems to want to fix everything wrong with the roster in one offseason. The way I see it, we simply aren’t likely to see large change.
Realistically, we are probably going into next season with:
Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, Strome, Buchnevich, Kakko, Chytil, Howden, Lemieux, Gauthier, DiGiuseppe, Kravstov, Barron (?)
As forwards. Could Strome be moved? Sure, but if the Rangers aren’t interested in bringing him back, I feel that’s a red flag to any buyer who’d be willing to part with value in acquiring him, so realistically, what’s the trade market look like? Unlikely he’s moved unless it’s in an unexpected larger package. Could Buch be moved? Sure, but unless it’s the result of other moves, I don’t see it. Sure, Kravstov may not make the team, DiGiuseppe may not be brought back (I just have him there because he’ll be cheap depth to re-sign). Maybe a veteran is brought in, but realistically, that’s the group.
And on D, realistically it’s:
Trouba, Fox, DeAngelo, Lindgren, Smith, Staal, Hajek, Miller (?)
Do I think the team wants to address the left side? Yes, I think it’s the most likely place we focus and the most likely deal to result in a package that would involve Strome or a ripple effect that would cause other deals to be made. If we don’t make a deal addressing it, I see us mostly standing pat. Could DeAngelo be moved? It’s possible but it’s similar to the Strome situation. He has one amazing year and all indications of being an elite PMD, but if we’re unwilling to commit to him, buyers will be wary as well. He’s valuable, but everyone will want a discount due to short track record, last issues, etc. Can we actually maximize value in a rerun that makes it worth it? As far as Smith/Staal? It’s possible they could find a taker for Smith at 50% to create some cap space, but it would also actually make the current depth worse so unless another move is made, I can’t see it. Staal could be bought out. It’s tough to imagine it finally happening, but if anyone is bought out this summer, that would be my guess.
Shesty and Hank are going to be the goalies. Georgiev needs a raise, has more value in a trade than Hank and probably doesn’t want to be a backup through his prime years behind Igor. He’ll be moved. Hank is extremely unlikely to be bought out. I believe he backs up Igor and plays out his contract.
Essentially, that means we’re likely to stand pat, see if any kids like Kravstov, Barron, Miller, Jones, etc. can make the club, hope for improvement from Chytil, Kakko, Fox, etc. and wait for Lundqvist and the other dead weight to fall off the books the following year before making any significant moves. Another year of development, plus knowing that in one more year the cap situation changes fairly significantly in terms of wiggle room, means I think Gorton will take the patient approach.
The most drastic things I could foresee being realistic this summer would be Staal being bought out and Georgiev being moved for an NHL ready bottom pairing LD. Otherwise, I am expecting to go into next season looking largely identical to this year and hoping for improvement and contributions from the kids, backed by a full year of Shesterkin.
A lot of noise out there that the Kings are looking very closely at Askarov. How mad would you be if we took Askarov with our 1st, 1st round pick?

Ottawa and Detroit sure would like that to happenA lot of noise out there that the Kings are looking very closely at Askarov.
Nemeth would be excellent but he's not the guy who would play next to Trouba. But he would solidify the other 4 spots.I think people should drastically lower their expectations on Miller for next year.
If the team is serious about actually wanting to make the playoffs, they need to get someone competent to play LD. Whether that be a longer term solution, or someone short term like Nemeth, it needs to be done.
So are they trading down, or hiring Milbury?A lot of noise out there that the Kings are looking very closely at Askarov.

I think they know what they are, gorton and Quinn are smart guys

No but I can't imagine he'd cost much from Detroit. Is Nemeth a UFA?

Dubi was still playing for the Portland Winterhawks when he was the age Chytil is now.Dubi had better hands, and was better at protecting the puck than Chytil has show this far. Chytil needs to improve in those two areas if he's going to reach his ceiling. Not saying he's on the chopping block he's still very young obviously. But I'm skeptical of the idea of him being a top-6 center next season.
That was a ballsy pick considering the team was on their way to Kansas City. They left E. Staal on the board but scooped Biz Nasty and Carcillo to corner the market on toughnessWell Pitt did do it with M.A.F
Askarov being taken at 2 would be incredibly foolish. At 2 or trading down?
hes as good As I’ve seen at that age. Carey Price level. but 2nd overall? Yeeesh

If that happens, do you trade 1st for 3rd+5th and pick Byfield at 3?
