I gotta admit, I was a bit worried that we wouldn't take Kakko, especially after the rumored heavy interest in Cozens.

I'm not convinced they would take Lafreniere even if they got the first overall pick, especially with their aversion to taking players from the Q. Our scouts really suffer from the "Smarter than Everyone in the Room" mindset. After all, these are the same guys who picked a random Swedish goalie that no one had really heard of in the second round.

Not taking Lafrenierre would be a fireable offense.

Some of you guys post like the Rangers are all of a sudden going to become patient. While I agree that is what they should be thinking, most patient teams do not commit ~1/4th of their total cap space to two 28 year old LWs after they announced a rebuild two seasons prior.
Pretty much

Panarin isn’t going to get any better, Kreider’s got maybe 3/4 good years left, and Zibanejad, Kakko, Fox and Shestyorkin aren’t gonna be on cheap deals forever

The window to win has been ripped open

Wasn’t Barkov the one who publicly trashed Florida’s attendance? Maybe it was at the NHL Awards or something? More fuel to the fire that he won’t sign there down the road.

this is the guy. He becomes a UFA the same summer as Mika. Are we putting up that cash for the two of them? I’d love it but we’ve got some time before that happens to see what we have.

Im assuming We don’t get the top pick. That could leave a guy like Lundell there for us between him and Chytil maybe you sit tight on signing a big center in 2 years

Hayes himself said he would only sign in Philly for a vast overpayment. Cue the contract that will not age well.

Honestly, I thought the line of Chytil-Howden-Lemieux was pretty good
I actually agree they were good as a checking line in game 3, and while I'd attribute that more to the injection of Lemieux, I do think Howden played his best game in game 3.

However, I disagree with the overall sentiment from Larry that Howden was assertive and generated offense.

I think they need to be patient next year, then start the march when the cap space appears.

This is pretty much what I was getting at with my post. It isn’t even that they want to be patient or will “suddenly become patient”, it’s that the hands are somewhat tied. Strome and ADA are both more valuable to NYR than they are on the trade market for a handful of reasons, namely short track record, known fit, need new contracts. If you’re not bringing them back, you’re not going to get full value while they require extensions and possible acquiring parties don’t know if they’ll fit or reproduce their success because they have not proven it to be their norm. If they are brought back, there’s little cap space to do anything else. The hands are slightly tied. People love to get creative and suggest Buch + DeAngelo + Georgiev for RNH + Nurse + Pulju, but deals like that are fantasy land. We have youth waiting to make the team next year, lots of guys who were rookies or very young this year. Lots of expiring contracts next year. The likelihood is very little roster turnover until next offseason.

They're going to be patient to a point, but yeah the whole "accelerate the rebuild" thing was unnecessary, especially when you don't really know what you have. We basically put our selves in a position where all of the cap flexibility we had was gone and now we're crossing our fingers that the kids figure it out before the expensive vets decline. Theres plenty of time left before that becomes a problem and I don't buy the static cap for the foreseeable future thing.

The good news is that they have so many assets at their disposal to fill in the gaps if necessary, both in the long and short term. They're going to have to hack off some salary, but it is doable as long as the FO is willing to part with organizational and coaching staff favorites.

Hank doesn’t make $8.5m. His real salary I believe is $5.5. If the Rangers retain half thats $2.75m in real dollars. I’d have a hard time seeing a team, not totally against the cap and who has a need in goal not at least inquiring. For example, Would Chicago give it a go? Or Colorado? Or Dallas? Calgary?
Whichever team has goaltending issues during the playoffs.

I agree with the first paragraph until the last sentence.

So, if things stay the course and MTL, AZ and CHI win their series we get the #11 pick.
If MINN or WPG win the lottery we go to #10 pick.

Should be in line to get a good player. (assuming that's right)

we'll get Lafreniere so its all moot.

Not taking Lafreniere and still picking at 1 would be. Trading down could be the better option depending on the offer

Only way im trading down is if OTT wants to give up the 3rd and 5th overall. Or maybe there is a package that we can do with the #1 overall pick and a few other peices to make the cap work, to get eichel. Otherwise i dont care that we have panarin and krieder as our top LW, you take the possible generational talent in Lafreniere. You can never have to much talent.

Then in a few years when lafrienere is ready to make the jump to one of the top lines we can move krieder down or just finally trade him like we should have done instead of giving him a 7year deal.

Panarin fell in our lap...you have to take him no matter where you are situated, you dont pass on a free player of his skill level.
Trouba was probably unnecessary but I still think a guy like him is hard to find. The Kreider deal bothers me

I agree with that line of thinking, they'd have plenty of cap space next summer. This should be a transition/developmental year. I am skeptical the Rangers feel the same way.

you think the vets decline sooner or the static cap is a thing?

I think Kreider is okay for another 2-3 years, Panarin likely longer. There is a big difference in talent level there.

2020 has been pretty messed up, I'm not so sure what happens with the Cap yet it feels wrong to predict it rising if it's still tied to revenue.

I don't think anyone really knows what Chytil will be yet. We have to see how his physicality matures. Right now, he's not strong enough to play the style of game he prefers. Depending on how that develops will say a lot about the kind of player he turns into. But his combo of speed, hands, size and willingness to go into the corners and get to the front of the net are all pretty exciting. But my guess is he's far from the player he'll be at 23 or 24. I think an interesting comparison for him Brandon Dubinsky in the sense that Dubi had a similar trajectory and people saw him in a similar mold. Middle 6 center or middle-6 winger but with a power forward game. And I think Chytil is more dynamic than Dubi was at the same age, both speed and hands. But, it remains to be seen.
Dubi had better hands, and was better at protecting the puck than Chytil has show this far. Chytil needs to improve in those two areas if he's going to reach his ceiling. Not saying he's on the chopping block he's still very young obviously. But I'm skeptical of the idea of him being a top-6 center next season.

I think they know what they are, gorton and Quinn are smart guys

I don't know how anyone could not believe the "static cap" is a thing lol

They renegotiated the CBA specifically for this reason
