I’m starting to wonder if there is a realistic timeline where the Winnipeg ask for Trouba stays just too large for other teams to want to pay - because Winnipeg is asking for prices of a player with term (young Dman RFA); whereas everyone else just wants to pay for the 1 year deal. All of the sudden the season has started and Trouba is still there due to organization stubbornness and when the deadline rolls around Winnipeg sees more value in keeping him for the run rather than trading him as a rental. Now you have Trouba in the off-season likely just having his rights traded to a team.

Remember that Trouba is not under contract. In that scenario, they either have to give him a 1 year deal or he'll get one in arbitration. He made 5.5 last year and Winnipeg has other players they need to pay with limited cap space.

I don't doubt they they could find a way to keep him for 1 year, but that might be more trouble than it's worth.

Unless I'm missing your point, didn't San Jose just do that with Karlsson? They would like to sign him, but they seem to have a lower ceiling now than last year. Nothing will stop EK from just walking.

And Trouba doesn't strike me as the fiercely loyal type, taking less to make it work for the acquiring team. He has held out and demanded trades in his short career. He won't lose any sleep walking out the door next summer.

Edit: I stand corrected after the @Tawnos post down the page a little.
I think they understood it could be a wait and see situation with Karlsson. Some of the compensation is dependent with him resigning. I don't think that would be the case with Trouba.

The Sharks have interest in Vlad. Interesting. Friedman said the Sharks have a lot of balls in the air and trying to re-sign Karlsson.

Very glad to see this tidbit on Vlad. I don't think he contributes to us or a young team. Want the "vets" to provide stability, Names is lost out there. Not sure if he is the best influence on the other Russian kids either.

I'd definitely gladly take a 3rd and a 4th for him or something like that.

I was in St, Marks Basilica in Venice when they signed Hayes

Strangely, I have 2 Colorado related memories. I was in Rocky Mountain National Park when they signed Sakic to the offer sheet. I was in Denver when they signed Shattenkirk.

I also remember being in Seattle when Messier signed in Vancouver.

Another major issue is the contract. Is Trouba giving free agency in the summer of 2020 to sign with the team acquiring his rights? Nobody knows the answer to that question except for Trouba and his agent Kurt Overhardt who is major pain in the ass.

Good luck.

See ya later Chris.

The Sharks have interest in Vlad. Interesting. Friedman said the Sharks have a lot of balls in the air and trying to re-sign Karlsson. The Jets tried to acquire Nyquist but he had a NTC and said no to Winnipeg. I wonder what would have to Hayes to the Jets if they acquired Nyquist who was traded on Sunday night before the Monday deadline. OTOH,Winnipeg tried to acquire Simmonds from the Flyers after getting Hayes.

Bridge deal for Pavel sounds right. Need to see more for him but committing big money to him.

Forget about Vesey. Trade him too.

There are a couple of reasons why Trouba might be open to signing long term this summer. He gets a long term contract that protects him in case of a severe injury. He picks up a year of premium salary vs. the arb award.

There's no guarantees here but I am sure that knowing the type of assets we would have to send to Winnipeg, we would want assurances a contract would get signed before closing the deal.

How are we going to solve having a glut of defenseman? Only so many spots for Rykov Reunanen Fox DeAngelo Pionk Staal Smith Shattenkirk Skjei Lindgren Hajek to play. Not to mention Lundkvist/Miller in the future.

Well, I think it is a very realistic possibility that Skjei gets moved halfway through the season if some of our rookies are progressing nicely.

Re-Sign Kreider. I am all for him being part of the future solution.

8 goals over the last 43 games last season. 21 points.

Career high of 53 points. .58PPG career.

You want to give him his biggest contract he's ever had, with a NTC, during what'll likely be the downside of his career.

7x7. Kreider's not worth that. It's time to move on from him.

I also think we see both Smith and Shattenkirk moved either this off-season or next off-season creating 2 more spots.

Staal
Skjei
ADA
Pionk

Hajek
Pionk
Lindgren
Fox
Rykov

Reunen
Miller
Lundqvist

In order of who is in the long-term plans most likely along with when hey may be available for full time NHL duty.

That leaves Shattenkirk and Smith as trade chips (or buy-outs) and possible Skjei and Pionk as similar depending on what comes up. I think Staal sticks around

I think Smith would be bought out and Shattenkirk moved. Staal isn't going anywhere and that is fine. We aren't looking to be competitive next year and we need a vet or two to help insulate our younger D in the event they need to be sheltered a bit.

Also discovered that he played hurt for a good portion of those "down" games.

fox signing signals the end of the pionk era.

fox needs to play and will play key minutes and with ADA head and shoulders the better dman compared to pionk, there's no minutes for neal. hence, his departure.

thats your pp right there too. fox, ADA and shatty.

with 22 still here, mr 44 is a goner fer sure.

this defense will be led by staal and shatty and skjei with fox and ADA. those 5 are a given.

i think hakej has a spot out of camp on the left side.

rykov might get a legit look.

they dont need smith around to play forward anymore and he cant play reliable defense so hes bought out.

staal is forever and god knows hes getting older and if its possible, slower. pretty soon hell grow roots.

I think most players in the league play through little nagging injuries over the course of the season. Kreider is what he is at this point. A good player who is solid around the net and plays a North/South game.

I don't think we should get married to him until he's 36 years old, at a bigger contract than what he's on now.

I think the coaching staff believes the gap between Pionk and DeAngelo is much smaller than we do

I wouldn’t be shocked to see DeAngelo moved. If Fox can step right in, and Shatty stays, DeAngelo could be seen as redundant

I do not think so. There is a reason that Gorton targeted DeAngelo. This was not some random throw in. There is a reason why Quinn would not let up on him. And the results were obvious.

Shattenkirk and DeAngelo are anything but redundant. One is worthless and just is taking up a spot until his contract runs out. And offers promise and has shown that he can be a part of the new core.
