I love the premise of “if you could get Malkin for nothing would you do it” I mean why not? If it’s solely a cap dump for Pitt and we only have to give them Vesey and Pionk and a 3rd or some other generic garbage proposal, why not take Malkin? Most people here want to take on shit contracts anyway and he only has 3 years left. The thought of 3 years of Malkin at 9.5 vs 7 years of Panarin at 11m is interesting though.

Of course it all is irrelevant anyway bc getting him for nothing undermines the whole point of why Pitt would trading him. They wouldnt move Malkin for just cap relief it would be to jolt some new life and assets into them. They’d want Chytil/Andersson & Buchnevich and a Young D probably.

The idea from Larry that Malkin at 9.5 for 4 more years would return less than 15 games of Hayes is hilarious though when you look at it that way.

Something that has been percolating a little for me is that I can see circumstances starting to form that might (underline might) bring Kevin Hayes back to the Rangers.

It starts, or said better, it ends with Panarin. If he signs elsewhere and Kreider is moved, it will leave the Rangers with a load of cap room and an opportunity to add another forward. There’s really no place I see in the free agent market to spend anything on defense. There’s always the opportunity of making a trade using some of that space but the Rangers know Hayes, he has clearly shown growth and perhaps his grand salary demands are not met elsewhere. I’m not necessarily advocating or predicting here but just thinking out loud.

Nah, not for what he’d command, particularly in terms of term and no movement clauses. Keep the space free to absorb bad contracts, facilitate trades, and/or sign kids coming off ELCs/bridge deals.

I'm all for bringing back Kevin Hayes. Not at 6/42 he'll most likely get.

The thing is I don't think Mario would ever let it be a cap dump.

Wonder where Gorton is with Lemieux and Buchnevich negotiations?

Buchnevich scored 21 in 64 games this year. He's 24. I love the idea of him in a full time top 6 role with the Rangers. Especially if Kakko is going to be worked into the equation.
Lemieux injected alot of life into the Rangers. They don't have a player like him, and haven't since Avery. What does the "tuffness", and the "agitation" intangable do for his next contract?
Both are easy bridges.

Larry has LOST IT. He simultaneously convinces himself that they should trade for Malkin, but by the end of the article he’s unsure. Couple that with the fact that for some reason he thinks JD is going to have carte Blanche over the makeup of this team, which is asinine. This should be his retirement article. Just awful.

Larry, god bless him but he has been wrong way more often than not recently. He seems like he's just trying to throw **** at the wall to see if it sticks, we get it larry your not a fan of the rebuild.
He’s not even a fan of the Rangers he’s a Devils fan.

If we offer sheet anyone they better be a Toronto Maple Leaf. Marner is far more worth the 4 1sts than Point. And btw Pens trading us Malkin would be 8 dimensional chess level genius. Trade a 34 yo who's body is breaking to a rival for their young talented assets and watch Malkin decline on us while you develop our guys.

I always find myself wanting to defend Larry nowadays. He writes an article lifting a few topics, not putting much value in any options. You are JD, what do you do? Brings up a few names more than a handful of readers will know.
