Both bad options at this point, so the argument is beyond mootIf the Rangers choose Girardi over Stralman again, I'll scream.

Seems like a solid top-4 D at 24, what is there to reclaim?I know everybody hates Ristolainen but I think he could potentially be a quality reclamation project. Could see him flourishing outside of the pit of hell known as Buffalo.

What good is size and bite if it doesn’t translate to effective defense? He isn't very good at defense.
I'd take a shot on him too, getting out of Buffalo may help him and he's got the size and bite we need on the right side.

Say what you want about the man, but you can't knock that kind of consistency
Don Lagreca and EJ Hradek discussed JD coming back to NY and the impact on the Rangers at the 14 minute mark.
JD is on board with the rebuild plan started by Gorton & Drury.
Unless Panarin falls into the Rangers lap, the Rangers won't be doing much with big name free agents.
JD can sell the Rangers steady approach to the fans if the Rangers miss the playoffs a few more times.
They discussed Panarin and his free agent status later on after Roy and Ottawa.
My view is Shattenkirk fell into the Rangers laps. He took less money and term to play in NY. Unless Panarin grew up in Russia as a big Ranger fan, he is not taking less to play in New York. Shattenkirk is from here and wanted to play at home. He took less. Much less.
So, to simplify, the plan above is to hope that somebody above turns into a Trouba and, if they don't, then hope a Trouba-like player is available in two years?
If Trouba is available now and the cost is the 20th and Buchnevich, I do that all day long and twice on gameday. RD is the toughest skating position in the sport to find talented players for.
And, honestly, anyone can get injured at any time so I'm not going to speculate about future health for any player unless there are health issues known before the trade.
We lost and are now gonna draft Kakko. They don’t need JD to sell losing as a good idea. Nor do they even need to sell it.Other than Panarin there isn't much in it for us with the other big name free agents. Erik Karlsson has been a physical wreck the last couple seasons. Matt Duchene is a good player but he forced his way out of Colorado and more or less did the same with Ottawa--he fights his teams over contracts and has a tendency to slump when he's not getting his way. Karlsson and Duchene are not players I would want the Rangers to go after.
I expect the Rangers will be a better team next year. If the only reason the Rangers have for signing JD is to sell losing as a good idea to Rangers fans they shouldn't have bothered bringing him back.

And if we’re bad again next year, add another high end stud. Byfield would be a dream. This is the best chance we've had in years to develop a stud offensive player.
Kakko/Hughes
Kravtsov
Chytil

Jumping up to 2nd was great, but has knowingly brought this kind of thinking. It was a great result, but it's foolish to bank on this happening again.
Ask the Knicks.
And six weeks ago there was no undeniable franchise talent in the pipeline at forward. So a lot can change when the opportunity arises. I don't think wanting to be cautious about rushing to fill immediate needs because of the long-term outlook is anymore disingenuous than assuming a top RD is a position that can't be filled from within.
Until this year Trouba was an oft-injured, 20-30 point defensemen. One good season isn't any kind of assurance that he's the right investment.
The Rangers had the fewest regulation and OT wins in the NHL this past season. 26 ROW. Take away the gimmick points and the Rangers were the worst team in the NHL. They can't be much worse.
The Rangers need to see what they have in their young guys. Forget about the wins and losses. I know the guys from the Post don't think much of Andersson. The Rangers need to give Andersson an opportunity. He played just 49 NHL games. The same thing with Chytil and Howden. More ice time and more responsibility. Kakko(the Devils are taking Hughes) and Kravtsov will be on the team. That's a lot of young players. The Rangers are rebuilding. The young guys will improve with more ice time.
Andersson split the season between the NHL and AHL. Chytil was shifted all over the lineup. One game Chytil played 4th line center. The next game Chytil played 2nd line right wing. Howden received more steady ice time than the other two players. He went 4 months between goals and missed a month with a knee injury. All of them will be a year older. Quinn needs play all of them more.
