But the team will still have huge anchors on the cap
I don't believe Panarin becomes an anchor until years 6/7
I do however believe that EK will be an anchor by year three as his legs are starting to give out.

After the spotlight the NHL Network put on EK the other night, I'm more inclined to pass on EK now than I was and I didn't really want him a month ago.
And why would one game change your opinion in any way regardless of whether or scored a hat trick or looked like he was hurt? He’s had the same injury since before the all star game and rushed back early and has been playing through it ever since. Of course it hasn’t gotten better. It’s probably something relatively serious and he’s playing anyway like most players do at this point. It’s not a chronic issue.

It's not one game.
There was another report earlier in the pos that indicated he was skating with a hampered leg and the short clip they showed then was concerning then.
He missed the entire month of March and came back on the last day of the regular season to get ready for the playoffs. He obviously rushed back, is playing hurt, and wouldn’t even be playing now if it wasn’t the playoffs. With all that he’s still third in points during the playoffs. Why is this a surprise?
After the season ends we will probably find out he came back months early or needed surgery or something and played through it.

EK makes little sense from my POV, but I don’t know if he will become that big of an anchor. If anything he has shown that he can play at one leg and there is no reason to not expect the issues he has now to get better.

Difference is that we will have a mix of veterans and young players; not just a mix of UFA’s. Imagine being a young player getting to play with and learn from the likes of Panarin and Karlsson.
Inside info a few weeks ago had Chicago looking at podkozkin at 3. Not sure if that changed or not

Skating (speed in particular) is the most overrated skill in hockey but gets weighted way higher than it should be because of how visible it is.
there are very few things that everyone on this board should all agree with. the first one is pure joy over picking either hughes or kakko at #2...the second one should be not wanting anything to do with erik karlsson
I really feel like we aren't talking about Subban enough. The guy is available for trade and Nashville might have to retain to move him. They wouldnt need to retain if trading with us. We can give them both Kreider and Shattenkirk at 50% if they are interested. I really think there is a deal to be made there and Subban would be of more use to us for longer than EK65.
Turcotte could also be their guyI'd be very surprised if they don't take Byram.
EK has been my favorite Defenseman for years and I want nothing to do with him now. He can still play at a high level, but he's not worth the risk down the road.

Strome? I like him.A little after the 11 min mark:
Chris Johnston weighs in on the Hurricanes/Bruins series and Karlsson's future - Sportsnet.ca
We are No 1. for Karlsson. So what is the plan, corner the market of RDs so that someone will give up something for Shatty?Karlsson, TDA, Pionk, Shatty, Fox, Keane, Lundkvist. All same size and play same style.
Seriously though, a few thoughts.
1. One guy that really are turning heads at the WCHs is Eric Cernak, he is playing like a real stud. RD with size that play a tough game, and can skate and has offensive tools. I know that Yzerman is the worst GM ever, but he seems to have picked up another good player in that trade.
Cal Foote is coming of a really steady season in the AHL. He can step in and play next season. That gives them 6 Ds. They have about 10m in cap space and must sign Point and bring in 3-4 depth guys. Cally is an easy buy-out, and they should be able to move him to someone for a little sweatner.
I think Tampa makes a lot of sense for Erik Karlsson. Does Karlsson make a lot of sense for Tampa? I think they do. The thing is, Karlsson's by far biggest problem is that he has been a one-man-team for way to long. Everyone have been able to target him. That wouldn't be the case for him nor Tampa if he want there. I always thought Karlsson would stay in SJ, but if his wife isn't liking it there, who knows.
The only real scenario I see Karlsson coming to NY is if the Currey's daughter tells him to get it done and Erik complies and Gorts cannot resist the temptation at around say 9m and 5 years or whatever... 11m x 3 years or whatever. That would make a mess, RHS would play on the left side, we saw how long it took for Karlsson to get settled in SJ and what a mess it was with having both Burns and Karlsson on the ice at the same time, and those two are pretty talented...
2. After break-up day, Henrik Lundqvist surprised everyone by agreeing to go to the WCHs. Hank have been pitching NY City to Erik Karlsson. He sits down with Quinn and Gorts and suggest that the rebuild is over on break-up day. Karlsson will consider coming here. Shortly after (right?), he accepts to go to the WCHs and once there he makes that comment to Expressen, 'I have to respect that the organization might want to go in a different direction' or whatever he said.
It doesn't seem to me like Gorton gave Hank the answer he wanted on break-up day.
3. Sakari Manninen is a perfect center for Kaapo Kakko. 5'7 and skates like the wind, small and can handle the puck and skate with it in traffic.
Its hard to find someone more similar to Sakari Manninen than Tyler Johnson. TJ was an Yzerman favorit. 5 years left at 5m per, he is 28 y/o, 29 y/o when next season starts. TJ is the type with a light body that sometimes can keep it up at a high level for a long time, 5m is not much in today's cap climate. We have so many bigger forwards in the system if we get Kakko, Buch is big, Kravy is big, Ziba.
I am just saying, if we were to add someone this off season -- someone in the mold of Tyler Johnson is what I would want. Small and speedy and can get the puck up ice.
I wouldn't be against a deal like this that I think would work for both sides, if Tampa signs Karlsson and buys out Callahan: Strome @50% and Names @50% (1 year for both) for Tyler Johnson and Tampa's 1st (27th).
4. In Finland, nicknames often ends with an -o. Gabriel becomes Gabo. Finns cannot pronounce G or B before an o, it becomes a K in both instances. Gabriel becomes Gabo and Gabo becomes Kaapo. Katharina becomes Katho, and its easy that Katho becomes Kakko.
Kaapo Kakko is in other words the Finnish version of Gabe Cathy.
Why is he named after Katarina. Katarina, or Cathrine II in English, was the Russian Tsaress (Empress) during the later part of the 18th century. Sweden lost Finland to Russia in 1809. A lot of places in Finland was named after Katarina after that. Even if the name was hard to pronounce, that name, the bigger districts and places named after her still keep her name. Especially around Åbo or Turku as its called in Finish and English, new districts was created after a fire in 1827. There was however other smaller places that had the name changed to Kakko.
5. Its hard to know what Gorton's plan is with Kreider, but it doesn't seem unlikely that he will be traded.
To force through a deal, its not bad to work with conditions. You just must make them the right ones. One could be Kreider to Arizona for their 1st this season and a 3rd next season that becomes a 2nd conditional on Kreider resigning there, that becomes a 1st conditional on Arizona making the POs next season.
6. There are many teams looking for a RHS PPQB out there. They are like back-up goaltenders, there is always someone that needs one and you don't want to enter a season without one, it can really torpedo your entire PP if you have to start to make it work with a LHS there, to a big extent these guys are interchangeable. Shatty is still a good PPQB. Gorton should be able to deal Shatty, but he probably have to take a contract back. Like Belesky, something like that.
7. I think Gorts is trying hard to deal Smith, I think they agreed to have Smith give it his all and be a team guy last season in return for Gorts doing everything to deal him now. Remains to be seen if it can be successful.

Draft
2019 - 2, 20 and 27
2020 - NYR 1st, Dallas 1st (if Zucc resigns there) and Arizona's 1st (if Kreider resigns there and Ari makes the POs)
This that would put us in a good position going forward. But there are of course options and pros and cons with all alternatives.
