I suppose. I just see two distinct things here.

Having several albatross contracts with underperforming players is a problem.

Having a lot of high performing high earning players causing a top heavy roster is less of a problem.

No one in Pittsburgh or Chicago was complaining much over the years.
I mean I feel like as long as you have high performing players making good money then you will be ok. Teams will still be interested even with the cap hit and you can recoup multiple assets to replenish the system / bottom lines with cheap young talent.

If you end up with Panarin/Kakko/Kravtsov/Chytil/Howden/Lemieux/Lias/xxxx all performing well then its a great problem to have.

On the flip side I would rather have the high priced free agent added now while all these kids are on their ELC or 2nd contract before they are asking for high dollar. Of course that would require them performing and reaching their ceiling

Agree with the sentiment that if Panarin is a Ranger, it will be on the Rangers' terms. Something similar to Gaborik: A 5 year deal with limited trade protection in the $10-10.5m range. If he wants to play for the Rangers, he'll take it. If he wants more money he can head to Florida or sign with the Isles or whatever.

I also think their pursuit will depend on a few other things breaking right between now and July 1st. Moving a roster player or two out, getting one of their top guys in addition to Kakko, or finding a creative way to dump one of the ugly contracts on the blue line.

Personally I think they whiff on Panarin and find a way to get Nylander.

Still debatable if he's even worth that deal if we are talking 7x11 million. If I'm giving that contract out then I want a top line center or #1 defenseman who are arguably more impactful.

Excellent point.

The idea of going after Panarin at a reasonable price is what has always made sense

Some people believe 7/11 is reasonable.

Here’s a question for the Pro Panarin crowd.

Our greatest fears come true and he starts declining at 30.

So, in year 3 of his 7 year contract he falls victim to Father Time and his production drops from the 80 point range to the 60 point range.

What do you do? What can you do? He’s locked up for another 4 years with a NMC absorbing 13% of our teams cap.

I think Nylander could be a really nice fit here. However, I have to question if he has the right sort of make up to fit in with the Rangers team building strategy. He's very talented, but he's definitely a perimeter player.

The cost of acquiring him is going to be pretty painful too.

It wouldn't be great, but this past season for example we wasted over 11M on Vesey, Spooner/Strome/Namestnikov/Beleskey, I'd take a 60-point Panarin over that. If the rest of the team is good enough he'd still help us.

That's a risk you take with every UFA. You may as well just never sign anyone in that case.

Besides, Panarin plays like Zucc and he's a high-level performer at 31. Panarin isn't going to decline short of injury. I'd put money on it.

Why not both

$$$$$

This is true, but they don’t all need to own the game in traffic. We have guys who can do that.

Why stop there? Trade for Trouba and Malkin.

18M for two wingers is insane when you look at what we have at Center and Defense.

It’s even more insane when you realize our 3 best forward prospects are wingers. (Kakko, Kravtsov, Chytil).
Nylander can play center.

What’s our track record with big free agent signings?

Actually... Not just us. League wide. Look at the massive UFA contracts that teams have invested in. How often do those work out?

If I’m gambling I want the odds on my side.

If Panarin was a 1D? Or 1C?? Yea, that’ll have a significant impact on my stance. But he’s not. He’s a winger.

Panarin was not the best player in his last playoff series. For 11m a year X 7 years I want a better player.

For 11m you don’t want someone who’s going to help. You want someone who’s going to dominate.

The risk is ultimately too much imo. Especially considering we’re years away from being a legit contender.

I would LOVE to find a Top 5 player in the league who would only get a 7/77 contract.

If you're finding yourself into thinking this way, you've already lost and don't understand the current cap system.
