Above average 3rd line? Chytil has at his floor the capability to be an excellent 3rd line producer. What else are we throwing in there? Lets say its DeAngelo, who is our best offensive defenseman at age 24. How about the (2) 1st round picks that I can tell you right now will not be 31st overall when they subtract multiple pieces from their roster for one guy and who they cant replace due to cap constraints because of said one guy’s incoming contract. We are not winning the cup by depleting our depth.

I refuse to be Edmonton that has had McDavid for years now AND Draisaitl and cant put together anything behind them. And thats with them not dealing multiple pieces for one player.

The Rangers have the elite players. Panarin and Zibanejad. Just like most cup teams have. They have usually 2 elite forwards and then they fill in behind with a lot of good forwards with the cap being spread out amongst the group. Depth wins championships. Not 2 line teams.

That’s fine but id be willing to pony up for Eichel.

If we had two legit 1st lines I’d be fine with them playing 20-25 mins a night each. That’s better than trotting Howden out there for 10+ a night.

Decent defense and hot goaltending seems to win more than depth in the playoffs.

Let’s halt the on ice merits of trading for Eichel talk a bit, seriously — can anyone even attempt to describe how we could ice a competitive cap compliant team in 3 years time with Eichel on the roster?

Cap will most certainly not be much over 80m.

Trouba, Kreider and Panarin is 26.5m.

Two goalies and a 4th line is at least 12m.

Left to spend: 32m

We have left to fill, 1 first line forward, 2 second line forwards, a 3rd line and 5 Ds. 11 players in total. That is app. 2.9m per player.

Like a defense costs money. Let’s say the remaining 3 in the top 4 on defense costs just 5m each on average — that leaves us with 12m for 1 first line forward, 1 second line forward, 3 third line forwards, 2 third pair Ds and a couple of spares lol. 7+2 players.

Maybe I am missing something — but I can’t even remotely see how it could make sense for us to get Eichel.

I think we want to avoid the Toronto Model. But two big ticket forwards is doable. Though I guess Mika becomes a third. Fair point.

Yes. That’s what I was saying. The deal may happen for less, but not for ‘Buchnevich-Chytil-and-a-first’ less. There will have to be something big going to Buffalo.

(and personally, I’m not sure I’d want to do that considering Eichel’s cap hit, but it would be something to think hard and long about).

Show me the teams with 2 1st lines that have elite players, or even star players at all 6 spots. It does not exist. Didnt exist on the Blues cup winning team last year.

You know what the Blues did have? Fantastic depth. Guys they developed, whether they drafted them or made shrewd moves to acquire them early in their careers. Sanford and Sundqvist. Thomas. Barbashev. Blais. Thats what got them to where they wanted to be.

The Rangers are not at that point where it is ok to purge assets for the piece they hope puts them over the top. Heck I dont know if theyll need to get to the extreme of acquiring someone of Eichel’s caliber when they are indeed ready.

And if Howden is our best option in 2 years to handle the important depth minutes then this organization failed at drafting/developing/identifying targets...unless of course he figures out how to be a more complete player in that he realizes a role in this league and becomes a specialist at it a la Dom Moore.

Probably not but this is a unique chance to add a unique player. I’m not trying to just dump Trouba for the sake of it. It’s a cap deal. Gorton needs to be ruthless

It’s not the Toronto model if you have better defense and goaltending than Toronto. The Rangers have three goalies better than Andersen, and our defense is certainly no worse

Igor and Fox are untouchable for me. Kakko...is not. Nothing against Kakko, not trying to shop him but Igor and Fox have Vezina/Norris potential

I think the Blues are the outlier. They won because they had a goalie that was on fire and built a system around tha.. The Pittsburgh/Chicago model has been the dominant one this decade. Washington was a lot closer to that model too.

It’s a good point that Ziba and Eichel could potentially become our Corsby and Malkin. But I am just afraid that they would become our Koivu and Staal instead...

True. But like I said, it only works if the NHL pushes back the July 1st date in terms of when his NMC kicks in. If they don't, they won't be able to because they aren't trading away any roster player when they have games to play still. Eichel won't be eligible for the play in round

If Gorton’s team has done their job well, the Rangers defense SHOULD be inexpensive for a while. Fox, Lindgren, Hajek, Rykov, Reunanen, Lundqvist, Miller, Robertson, Jones. That’s assuming someone else doesn’t push up into that group but that’s 9 legitimate NHLers or prospects who have a higher potential. What this does is allow the team to allocate cap elsewhere for the next 3-5 years potentially.

And before anyone brings up paying Fox right off his ELC, I’d argue that while it’s a possibility, if the team didn’t have the room, he could also be bridged. With RFA’s there’s options.
