If Montreal can make a playoff push and the Islanders have that huge turnaround, I don't see how the Rangers are a lock for top 5 with Kaako, Kravtsov and Fox being added to the roster. It's possible the defense has a turnaround.

How’d that signing work out for Toronto? Bounced in the 1st round. Hell, they almost missed the playoffs.

Now that team is cap purgatory, despite signing Tavares for less than what SJ offered.

Tavares to Toronto made a hell of a lot more sense than Panarin here though. Their window is at least open right now.

We don’t even have a window. We have Sheetrock.

I don’t want to end up like Toronto. Top heavy team with **** Defense who’s going to most likely have to trade one of their homegrown talents.

In 2-3 years when Tavares’s production declines into the 60~ point range, Toronto will be paying him as much as they are now. And in 3 years, he’s still going to have another 3 years left on his contract.

I'm not arguing that Toronto's team-building is successful. All I'm saying is that being in an attractive market makes signing good UFA's a bit easier. That's all. I don't give a shit about Toronto.

I don't want Panarin or a big contract for Kreider, but I also don't see the point of jettisoning out the whole Strome-Fast-Namestnikov-Vesey group of players. Move one of them, maybe.

No one's going to give us that much for them and they're good insulation. I think the penalty kill especially needs to be respectable, that's where a lot of young teams like this get destroyed. You shouldn't go crazy for a Kravtsov-Namestnikov-Vesey line but like those two guys are generic NHL bodies, we could do worse.

Honest question:when someone dare say something negative about Gorton you take it almost personal. Gorton, who so far in his tenure as GM has turned a contender into a full rebuilding team in 2 years. Even if no one knows how this rebuild will go, maybe not for 5 years, Gorton is looked up on like a savior. Why?

Because he had the bravery to tear off the bandage instead of letting the team slide. If he had not done that, today we do not have Kakko, Lias, K'Andre, Lundkvist, Howden, Hajek, Rykov, Lindgren, the Jets, Tampa and Dallas picks. We probably have a worse prospect than Kravtsov. And we still most likely are out of the playoffs, except with a 10-14th finish from the bottom instead of 6th.

Jesus Christ, signing Hayes but not signing Panarin, why waste dollars? If you feel like you can benefit from Hayes, you can definitely benefit from Panarin. Go get an impact forward instead of spending money on a stop gap. Hayes is going to get paid either way. All dollars should go towards the best player available, Hayes is not that, wouldn’t pay that guy anything for term. Don’t want to pay Panarin either? That’s also fine. Don’t sit here and say Hayes is the best alternative route.
I’d go with Jesus. He was perfect. Great building block !

Toronto 1967 (and not a Final since) landed Tavares as a "historic franchise".

You read that right. They haven't been to the final in 52 years, much less winning it, and still got Tavares.
Yeah. I’d like to NOT be them! I’d like to be the franchise that everyone talks about in a decade and says “look at what the NYR did and Gorton... they had their chance and Hank is a HOF goalie but they saw the writing on the wall... disassembled and built smart. Yes they got #2 in 2019 but look at what they did since!!!!”

That’s what I want. Tavares I mean Panarin I mean Tavares has NOTHING to do with that vision.

I still am a bit confused why for those who want this team to be bad for not just 2019 but the next season as well, why trading Zibanejad isn't talked about more often. There's a good chance you could get Colorado's 4th overall pick as they could really use a 2C, and by trading him and Kreider and doing nothing in the offseason you can pretty much guarantee a top-5 pick next season and probably the season after. Which would give you 4 top-5 picks the next 3 seasons. Not to mention by the time Kakko hits his prime at 24, Zibanejad will be 32 and 3 years in on his new long-term contract.

They were bad in 19 and will be next season no matter what because the defense is like Chipotle coming out.

So those of us who want a great draft pick next year, can also see the reality of the situation.

Panarin doesn’t change the arc for the next two years. At all. In fact he’d hinder it by making us pick 10-15

montreal didn't turn around a rebuilding team though...they won their division, then the next year price was hurt and they went into the crapper and then this year he was healthy and they were back in playoff contention.

but i also think you need to lower expectations on those 3 as rookies. very few guys are impact players in their rookie seasons especially when they have little to no help on the team...here are 2 quick comparisons for kravtsov and kakko...i picked these guys because I think they are comparable and also cause it makes my laugh when people flip out of players being compared to guys from the same country lol

tarasenko...year 1 had 19 poitns in 38 games, year 2 43 points in 64 games and then finally busted out in year 3 with 73 points in 77 games
rantanen---year 1 had 0 points in 9 games, year 2 had 38 points in 75 games and then finally busted out in year 3 with 84 points in 81 games

I think everyone here would sign up now for kravtsov and kakko being our tarasenko and rantanen...but you probably aren't getting the year 3-5 ppg player tarasenko/rantanen in year 1

Im so tired of the aging argument. Who are we to predict how a player will age? What kind of metric is that? McDavid can get trucked at center ice next season and get a concussion so severe he will never be the same. There are guys in this league that block shots like no tomorrow and their play has never wavered. How can we possibly sit here and act like we know for a fact that Panarin’s or Kreider’s expiration dates are at such and such age. Jagr is still playing, who here is going to claim that when he was 27 they knew he would age so well he can play until he was 46 and then continue in Kladno? This is ridiculous. Malkin hasnt played a full season in forever and yet he puts up points like a beast. Sign elite players if you get the opportunity.

I'd hope that they can develop someone who can cover the 1C role by the time we have to worry about whether Zibanejad can still handle it or not.

Who wants to be bad beyond next year though? I'm pretty sure that the common though for most of us against signing Panarin is to suck next year and start to turn the corner after that.

It's about risk and reward while judging what we have here already. Yes guys can get seriously injured playing a contact sport, everyone knows that.

No one is Jagr though, stop it.

Just because I’m hoping for another top 5 pick next year doesn’t mean I want a top 5 in 2021. That’s the season I’d like to start seeing some progress. Beacon may think having another high pick for 2021 is necessary, but I don’t. It might be for the best benefit for our future, but I truly think after next year it will be the time to start asking to see some real progression in taking a step forward.

Yup and so can Panarin. Question is where’s the team? NOT who could have a career ending injury.

It’s about timing

I’d rather suck for another year rather than get bounced in Rd. 1

Make that two years.

I want cupSSSSSSSS

plural

Or at least many chances at it.

Stay the course

If the young players we already have at the nhl level dont take a step and help bring this team ahead of where it was last year then we are in big trouble.
