What happens if Kakko basically needs no adjustment period and hits the ground running right off the bat during all 3 of his ELC years and has some 75-80 point seasons? That extension right there would be 80 million dollars. What happens if Kravtsov has somewhat of a similar performance as Kakko in the 60-70 point range by the end of his ELC? That would be another really expensive contract. The cap is going up but probably not at the rate that everyone is expecting it to, every year there's a statement at the end of the year saying "the cap isn't going up as much once previously thought". Remember when the cap stagnated for a few years back? Some people on here want to pay 11 million for Panarin and have a buyout or 2 where that would be about 8 million or more in dead cap space next year. I think maintaining flexibility at this time is important and finding out what we have now is even way more important than that.
Having two players worthy of $10MM salaries is a helluva good problem to have. Where do I sign up for that?

If we trade Kreider and sign nobody big, we will likely be top-5 the next 2 drafts in 2020 and 2021. Maybe just top-10, but very possibly top-2.

The odds are pretty good that we can pull a very good player if we draft, say, #4 and #35 in 2020 and #7 and #38 in 2021, plus whatever we get for Kreider, Vesey, Names and Fast. I bet 5 years from now at least 1 of those draftees is better than Panarin will be in 5 years.
Gorton isn't going to be stripping and selling for two more years. This upcoming year maybe, but you definitely get the sense that they want to begin their upward swing towards being good again starting this year. I'd say if they're still selling and picking top 10 in 2021 then something has gone wrong, I definitely wouldn't expect that to be their plan.

11M dollars a year. Long term. With limited movement options.

Forget whether you’re pro rebuild, or the alternative. Forget about what our needs are now and what they might be in the future.

I ultimately don’t think Panarin is worth 11M a year for the next 7 years..

If we’re investing more than 10% of our teams cap space on 1 player, I want someone better than Panarin.

I realize what the cap is now and how that impacts contracts.. But at the end of the day I just don’t see him being worthy of that kind of contract.
What makes Panarin so intriguing now is his contract now relative to his cap hit. What happens when it is almost doubled and he starts to produce less and less into his backend of the new deal at nearly double the hit with a NMC,NTC. I don’t think people would like it as much.

RE the risk involved in signing UFAs, I think there is also a risk in standing pat, in certain scenarios.

It's also worth mentioning that, whether you'd agree with it or not, Gorton signed Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard during the same offseason.

Without the injury concerns.

Kovalchuk is the last guy to hit the market that was Panarin’s level.
And Tavares.

Honest question: I have only been a member here for a couple of years, but have been reading here for many more. Many of you posters have been very critical to certain players. Staal and Girardi have been called a lot of things. Sather has had his critics, and AV almost ridiculed. Many harsh and strong words have been used. But when someone dare say something negative about Gorton you take it almost personal. Gorton, who so far in his tenure as GM has turned a contender into a full rebuilding team in 2 years. Even if no one knows how this rebuild will go, maybe not for 5 years, Gorton is looked up on like a savior. Why?

I’ll reiterate that I wouldn’t go near Panarin at $11m. $9.5m max per year is my best offer. If he wants more that’s fine, he can get it elsewhere.

Trade Kreider.

Trade Vesey.

Trade Namestnikov

Trade Shattenkirk or Smith.

Florida will do you a favour and buy Panarin

Vesey and Names will go just not sure if that’s in thevoffseason or deadline

Smith and Shatty likely have no value so stuck w then this year ... last year if the contracts sure ... hope I’m wrong but it’s gonna take eating 50 Atleast

He was left w no long term assets to make this teams success sustainable

The rebuild was needed and on paper anyway it’s takkng shape .... we need to think future and not win now cause winning now was never feasible w the roster he inherited

Panarin made so many selfish and lazy plays last night.

On the first Bruins goal, Backes strips Panarin of the puck in the Columbus offensive zone and Bruins immediately went on the rush. Panarin skates with no effort into his own zone. The puck goes to Krejci. Panarin is right next to him. Panarin should have checked Krejci and wouldn't have scored but Panarin was too lazy to back check at the beginning of the sequence.

On the Bruins GWG, Panarin loses the puck again the offensive zone. Get the puck in deep. The Bruins immediately transition and go the other way. The puck goes to Pastrnak. Panarin is again a few strides behind Pastrnak. Lazy stick check by Panarin. Game over.

Panarin is a disaster waiting to happen.

The Rangers don't need him. The Rangers have enough quality winger options in Kravstov and Kakko. They say a team needs two elite 1st line wingers to win a championship. The Rangers have them with Kravstov and Kakko.

Panarin is a stupid idea.

In todays NHL being stuck in the middle with no playoffs and no high pick is the worst place to be. When Gorton took over there was clearly that NYR was heading that way. Some GM's or owners would have pressed on with what they had to maybe get into the playoffs one ore time for the extra revenue or the small chance for going on a run. Here on HFNYR we want to go all the way and compete for several years. Gorton started the rebuild as soon as the core started to stagger, and by that got a hell more assets to start a rebuild with. It was a brave decision, a decision that he would need to get OK for from the higher ups.

This rebuild so far is looking VERY good so far on the paper, we have gathered a massive stockpile of assets, with more to come this draft and next years draft. NYR have never had its own omegrown elite offensive talent, and that really hurt the last core. We will hopefully not need to go out and get a Gaborik, Richards or Nash for this core. This rebuild has the potential to be the blueprint that all other clubs will look at in the next 20 years when they feel their window is closing.

Comparing to say Edmonton in 09/10 and Buffalo in 14/15 we have a massive stockpile of assets because we started selling off before it was to late. Edm only had like Penner and Hemsky to trade when they blew it up. That combined with terrible drafting past the first round have put them in the terrible spot they are now. Already we have so many D and G prospects that we have issues to fit them all on our NHL/AHL squads, and hopefully over the 2 next drafts the same will be for F prospects. Some will be a part of our future core, many will bust, and some will never get a chance in NYR, but will flourish at other clubs.

If we can be one of the better clubs at selecting and develop prospects, those we cant fit we can use to get even more assets from other clubs again. At one point it will dry out while we are plugging holes in our rooster or trading for rentals, but the better job we do at the stage we are at now, the longer we can be a top team in the future.
