Well for one even if you’re the absolute worst team in the league you are still most likely not picking in the top 2.

So “let’s just pick in the top 2” is not exactly something you can just do

That's why I said top-5 or maybe top-2. Let's say we pick #5 in a strong draft. Is that bad? People here are clamoring for a guy drafted in the 8-14 range, but imagine how much better the prospect will be who was drafted in the top half dozen in a better draft...

Gorton has gone on record stating that Kreider will be dealt with one way or another this summer. Traded at the draft or in July or extended. He doesn't want another Hayes/Zuccarello situation. Dealing him during the draft or over the summer increases the number of suitors. Look at who's left in the playoffs. Every wildcard team made it to the second round. Every team on the cusp like Philly, Buffalo, Edmonton, Florida, Arizona, or Montreal is sitting and watching these playoffs thinking "this could have been us, we were just a couple of points short of making the playoffs, anything can happen once you're in the playoffs. I should try and bolster my team for a chance at making a run". Those teams will be very interested in Kreider. Will have to assume Edmonton and Buffalo, maybe Montreal are on Kreider's no trade list, so eliminate them. Still, there's three excellent suitors plus whoever else made the playoffs that will end up coming up short that will surely be interested.

Kreider with a year left gets the Rangers a late 1st and a decent prospect or a 1st next year.

Kreider with 50% salary retention gets the Rangers a 2019 pick between 13-18ish overall if a team in that range is interested.

Kreider with an extension after July 1st nets the Rangers a 2020 1st and a decent prospect.

What do you all think is the best course?

1) Kreider for a 20-25OA in 2019 plus a second in 2020 that becomes a first if he's either re-signed or they make the SCF, win or lose. Or

2) Kreider for 14-17OA in 2019 plus a conditional second in 2020 if he's either re-signed or they make the Conference Final, win or lose. Or

3) Kreider for 8-12OA and we give them a second in 2020 unless they either re-sign Kreider or make round 2.

All of these, the Rangers pick up 50% of his cap.

Yeah, maybe he said that, but even if he did, the words were placed in his mouth when he did that.

I am not sure how easy it is to trade Kreider at the draft. If we can't reach an agreement and only get like an offer of a 2nd and a 3rd at the draft what do you do then? I don't think you can overrate the extent to which NHL GMs are sitting on their hands.

I can imagine the response Gorton would get if he sent an email into that email group that the GMs have when they let everyone know that someone is available.

8 x "I am currently out of office and will return on September 30, 2017."

6 x "Mail Delivery Failure"

Two emails from Keith Gretzky:
The first reading, "Gorton is such a bozo, who does he think will take his crap?"
The second reading, "Please don't read the last email I sent you, I meant to send it to Chevy".

And then some tire kickers offering late round picks to take him off our hands. Or something like that. ;)

Will all three make the roster this season? Or is it far less likely for one or two of them to make it out of camp?

I have to say, I wasn't keen on Gorton making trades with conditional draft picks. But on the positive side, the DALLAS pick and also the WPG pick have made these playoffs so enjoyable. Like, even though the Rangers aren't even playing right now, I still have so much to root for. And even better the games aren't heart-attack inducing. Which means I can really enjoy playoff hockey. I get to keep enjoying Zucc. And doing so alongside my young son has been the most fun I've had watching the playoffs in a very very long time. So, I just want to thank Gorton for that. Not that this was his intention. But I'm really grateful that we as Rangers fans have reasons to enjoy hockey beyond April in a down year.

But why wouldn't they just sign a guy like Johansson to insulate the kids a bit? Having a 2nd line play making winger around is not a bad thing especially if they move Kreider.

Toffoli had 34 points last year and makes $4.6m. I wouldn't pay much for him. Maybe swap him in exchange for someone like Vesey or Namestnikov or a 3-way deal where LA gets a mid-round pick and some other team gets Vesey/Namestnikov/fast and the Rangers get a year f Toffoli.

I think we have different views of Johansson. You called him a second line wing and IMHO he’s very underwhelming in that role and, as such, he won’t provide this protection.

Re. Toffoli we again have a difference re. his price to get in a trade. I’d jump on it if it was Vesey and a 3rd rounder or less but I’m guessing it would involve one of potential (mid-late) 1st rounders or a second rounder and a quality B prospect like Barron or Hyjek/Rykov/Reunanen.

With Kakko (and probably) Kravtsov coming next year, I don’t see any place for Vesey in the lineup. Vesey is not an effective fourth line player. He’s entering his walk year. Very logical trade candidate. Most likely he brings back a high third or a low second.

Fast and Namestnikov are useful players who can play up and down the lineup. Both are good penalty killers. Fast is economical, Namestnikov is not (unless he is moved with salary retained) both are very good locker room guys. I expect the Rangers would like to retain Fast longer term at or near his current price. Unless something changes dramatically Namestnikov will not make $4.1 MM on his next contract. He’s probably a good deadline trade bait when half of his remaining salary can be retained.

I also would add Strome to this list. I’d try to keep Strome and Namestnikov. Agree that Vesey doesn’t have a spot on the Rangers long term and Fast is getting to the age where he returns more in a TDL deal with “veteran leadership “ than Namestnikov. Just hoping that Namestnikov contract demands are within the team’s budget allocation.

Very classy by the 19 year old, you don’t see kids doing this often.

All options include resigned Kreider conditions that I think are not sufficient. Stepan brought a top-10 pick and a high B-level prospect.

Will all three make the roster this season? Or is it far less likely for one or two of them to make it out of camp?

I’d put it this way: it’s much more likely that all three are in Hartford for a better part of (or the whole) next season than in NY.

The Russians? I would bet on 1 or 0 making it out of camp.
I think Kravstov would have a pretty good chance. Shestyorkin less likely. Maybe if some team made a great offer for Georgiev and we couldn't refuse? Highly unlikely. As the left defense stands now it would be hard for Rykov to win a job. I suppose if Hajek has a bad camp and somebody like Staal or Skjei gets hurt, but again highly doubtful. But I'd hope to see them get some time in later in the year.
