Thirdly, I’ve had a looong patience with Brady Skjei, but he is starting to push it even for me lol. Damn, drop the boneheaded plays. I think it’s harder to play D for a poor team that we acknowledge, and that the standard D that starts to get into trouble for us probably would fare perfectly OK for a more consistent team. Skjei is not a ‘dumb’ hockey player per se, like say a Namestnikov.

But Skjei is struggling with his focus. He shouldn’t have problems settling down. He is making the typical mistakes a D with poor confidence is making.

OTOH, these things can take time. Sometimes you wait and give up hope after a long time, and things just fall in place all of a sudden.

I wouldn’t put this as a negative on DQ, or AV or Ruff. Different people communicate differently well with certain types. But with Brady Skjei, I wonder if a Mike Keenan type that was extraordinary sour due to a cheating wife, having gout for weeks and a first born son that told him he wanted to become a hairdresser, would be perfect.

If we talk the expansion draft then by the end of the year Gorton’s hand might be forced by progress of performance from Hajek, Lindgren and hopefully eventually Rykov. Skjei should have a very solid value around the league and his warts maybe viewed as “occasional” that could go away in a different environment including coaching. His cap hit could not be viewed as absolute barrier given perceived upside. Timing wise it could solve a few potential problems lurking just around the corner beyond this season.

I really hope they explore the idea of what’s out there for him... I feel like we’d get a pretty good return for him being his age/skating/cost/control etc... and I personally think better options are really in out near future

Ryan Strome to Buffalo?

Better yet, Kreider for Fleury? Carolina’s owner is willing to spend. Then flip Skjei for a forward.

23 years old, healthy scratch in 4 straight and 12 points in 97 career games...aside being able to say you traded for a former 7th overall pick how is that 1) a good deal for kreider and 2) improve our LD short or long term?

Fair points. Didn’t realize he was that bad. He always had that potential.

Some people seem to miss the fact that the Rangers are already the youngest team in the league and they want/expect them to get even younger. C'mon guys...someone has to buy the beer,

I think a decent number of people, myself included, expected the team to be better this year than last- even if we werent yet in playoff contention.

Adding Panarin, Trouba, and Kakko, whilst losing only Zuccarello and Hayes seemed like a net gain, especially assuming continued youth player development.

Still, this shows as much as anything that in order to have a successful team you need full lineup balance.

We lost Zuccarello, Hayes, Shattenkirk, Namestnicov and Pionk compared to last year.

TBH I don't count Shattenkirk and Namestnikov as major losses. Loss of veteran experience sure, but not in overall quality.

Fox, to me, is already better than Pionk. I think Neal got ripped on too hard by the stats nerds, but I still see Fox as the superior player.

It's early...the young guys are going to get better. I don't know if we will compete for a playoff spot but I bet they make the second half of the season interesting.

Shattenkirk leading all D in TB with 10 pts in 13 GP. Namestnikov is second in team scoring for Ottawa with 10 pts in 12 GP. I think we lost a little more than just “veteran experience”.

No.

No, No, No.

I haven't liked what I've seen of Fleury. I'd much rather Jake Bean. They can't send Fleury down because of waivers. Bean and Gauthier might get me interested although I would defer to pro scouts who have had eyes on them.
Yeah I had no idea Fleury was this disappointing. Scratch that idea. I guess it’s because I would always draft him or trade for him in NHL 19 and he’d always live up to his potential for me:laugh:

Yes but we werent a good team last year, we got younger, lost a lot of experience and are currently icing the youngest team in the league. It's all a part of rebuilding a team, I mean the Leafs haven't even gotten out of the first round yet, so while it's nice to have faith in kids it generally take some time. Having said all that, Chytil looks better now, Kakko seems to be turning the corner, Fox has been awesome and with Zibanajad's return it might lead to better things ahead. LGR

If it were feasible I would love to see something around Kreider and Zadorov. I think Zadorov has been slowly putting it together but with Girard and Byram on the left he’s going to get squeezed out soon. He would add an element to this team that we have not had.

I agree with the general premise of this, but count me in the camp of someone that doesn't trust our pro scouts to make the right call.

Pass. Zadorov is a dime a dozen player. Ryan Lindgren or Libor Hajek can do the job that he does for the lower cap hit. Zadorov just isn't very good.

If Colorado calls us about Kreider, I'm asking for Martin Kaut in return. Newhook is a pipe dream. Kaut or no deal. Pit the Pacific and Central division playoff contenders against each other for Kreider. Someone will pay Gorton's price.

Kaut is a player the Rangers would probably ask about. Incredibly doubtful Colorado moves him for a rental.

But I would say there’s definitely a level of interest in someone like Jost, particularly as a LW. And I think Colorado might be more receptive to that idea, especially if Jost doesn’t find a more prominent niche on their roster.

Similar to our discussion in the Around the NHL thread, I think that if the Rangers want Jost, they'd have to add to a Kreider rental to get him. Probably would have to include a player on the Howden/Andersson level of value in addition to a rental Kreider to get Jost and a mid round pick and AHL warm body in return.
