I’d love to be the guy for the job (duh) but I sort of do wish the team would bring in someone like me who has a special operations military background that also played hockey so they can skate and get on the ice with the guys as well, and fluidly discuss things like puck support, pinching, getting traffic to the net, etc. Someone with a strong enough hockey and military background to speak to both sides at a high level, who can put them through some physical and mental exercises and challenges that are clinically proven to inoculate against stress, enhance resiliency, promote team culture and bring some perspective to the room. It’s a young team. Guys like me are older than the oldest vets on the team. Discussing the things we’ve seen/done on assignments overseas, the way that trusting and taking care of your team isn’t just a game but life or death, the level of fitness and commitment that it takes and the stark contrast in compensation and living conditions that we get, versus the comforts a NYR player is blessed with. Shit, to travel with the team and attend all the practices, spend some time with each guy one on one as well as is in classroom/weightroom/on-ice scenarios… what would it cost the team? $50k? $100k? Could it POSSIBLY hurt? I feel like it definitely COULD help.
