The whole soft tampering thing from Ottawa is pretty pathetic. You've been in a perpetual rebuild for 7+ years at this point and this is what you're talking about? A reporter musing about what the Rangers could be thinking? Then literally every team in the NHL is guilty of tampering all season long.

It does prove my thoughts about the Brooks article though - there's nothing actually happening but it is a shot across the bow to make an overture to Tkachuk that we want you bad, just imagine being a Ranger and think about that to plant the seed over time.

Clearly Ottawa perceived it as exactly that and are all bent out of shape probably because they're afraid of it working. But actual tampering? Because a columnist with zero affiliation with the team wrote an article about how the Rangers would be interested in Brady Tkachuk? Not even close.

The lock step in reporting on it as if it's legitimate from the Canadian hockey media is interesting though. Between this and the pearl clutching about how Trouba (and Goodrow) were offloaded it really seems like there's a concerted effort right now to ruin the Rangers' reputation with players and make them seem like the mean bad team nobody should want to play for because they're such big meanies.

Geo must be seething. Shesty making bank followed by being traded to a bottom feeder.

Makes me moderately happy.

Also he’s in a similar position again. Askarov is the real deal and is going to come in very shortly and take Georgie’s job again. It’s Shesterkin in NY all over again, just Askarov is even younger and Georgie is older now.

Also just accidentally found out his dad’s name is Georgi Georgiyevich Georgiev. That is not a joke.

The Rangers could put out a line of Sylvester Stallone from Rocky, Sylvester Stallone from Rambo, and John Wick (not Keanu Reeves, but the actual guy), and people would still say the team is too soft.

Same goes for mental tuffness.

Rangers led the league in comeback wins last year and have like 70 the last 3 years and we still hear about how they never show any fight.

Little League World Series winner. Martial arts master. NHL general manager. That's serious life progression.

You left out Stanley Cup champion. How dare you.

You both forgot maybe his biggest accomplishment..

We've had some extracurriculars in a couple of recent losses, so I guess they're trying.

It's not doing anything!

Yeah when I look at this rangers team my first thought is, “boy I sure wish they had 3 more bad players”

Rick Carpiniello is a clown.
I like the concept of Matt Rempe, but I can’t remember the last time I rolled my eyes so hard because of a meme player that certain parts of the media and fanbase can’t help but glaze.

He’s the Haley-Newburgh-Dorsett(all due respect) of hockey players.

The coaches we hired right back to AV used the man to man, never worked for any of them and each one got canned. See a trend? BTW, they are playing a structured game, they just can't keep up to other teams forwards and it all falls apart. The structure is to stick with a man, everyone has a man to stay with, when you cant turn on a dime ie Trouba, Miller, Lindgren, etc or not quite big enough to handle bigger players ie Fox, Jones then you are left with 1 dman that can play the system you are trying to implement and thats not even talking about the forwards. It's nonsense, you can easily change the system to a zone d, it's much easier than trading away your d core and half your forwards. They use zone d on the pk and were one of the best in the league at it, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with this, maybe the coaches like getting fired? Who knows.
It's crazy they they continually hire coaches that coach a certain way.....yet expect them to change their philosophy to accommodate players???

At this point, we should start getting players that are comfortable with that philosophy as opposed to trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole and over and over again with similar coaches.

I'm not comfortable with or confident in this group regardless of the system.

Time to change it up, but the coaching staff gets more than a year and a half

The Rangers are set up with some flexibility this summer. They can lock up Cuylle if they want to a 5+ year deal, or Kakko even, depending on who they value more. They have a lot of wing depth and 3 centers under contract for the top 9. The issue is on defense.

Miller and Lindgren need to go and I think Drury agrees. There's a reason he locked up Laf and Igor and not K'Andre.

Miller has just not progressed. He's likely to blow up elsewhere if we move him because his raw talent is that of a first pairing guy, but he makes too many mental mistakes in his own zone and doesn't do enough offensively to make it worthwhile. He has looked better the last couple of games, I'll admit, but I'm hesitant to commit to him for 5-6 years.

Assuming something like Cuylle (5x4.25), Jones (1x1.5), Edstrom (1x900K) re-signed, the Rangers can add a player in the realm of $6-9M if they want who can be real difference maker. I'd argue that position should be at LD but there really isn't a FA that sticks out to me.

I'm also assuming Brady Tkachuk isn't available, but if he is I'd be all over that deal and I'd be throwing Miller, Kakko, and Othmann at Ottawa and see what else is needed to complete the deal. Assume he's not though, they should be on Sam Bennett. Something like 6x6. A line of Bennett-Trocheck-Cuylle would be brutal to play against.

QO Vaak and Jones and let them play and bring in a vet 7D like Dumoulin and that's 2/3 of your left side pretty cheap. I think Vaak may surprise a bit. The issue is then K'Andre and Kaapo because you can't really sign both. If you bring in a Bennett, you don't have a need for Kakko or Othmann really and Berard is likely on the 4th line with Perreault completing the Top 9. A lot of different ways the offseason can go but if you package Kaapo and K'Andre you can probably get a pretty good D partner for Fox that fits in the cap configurations. Other options are to move out Chytil and Kreider to create more flexibility but that's less attractive to me.

This is the real problem. They have few internal answers on defense (at least none who will be ready in the next year or two), and they have NO internal answers at C.

At wing, we have Laf, Kakko, Cuylle, Bread, Kreider, Smith, Berard, Perault etc. That's where the currency is. They can move two of those eight to address the C and D issues, but you really only have the one chance. They need to make the right deal.

As much as I don't think he's a part of the solution, I think these logistics protect Mika for the short term at least. If we move him, without bringing a center back, the team only has 2 top 9 centers--the inconsistent Trocheck and the often injured Chytil.

W doesn't easily buy D or C.

Miller is the obvious solution to a partner for Fox. For that to happen it's clear he needs the correct coaching. It's also clear that Housley is not up to that important job at all.
